41 here! Just started on bcp 4 months ago even though I had tubal ligation after my daughter. Wow has it balanced me out. Finally the night sweats, rage, brain fog, chronic fatigue, insomnia etc etc has subsided and I feel me again. So grateful my mom alerted me to this in my teens and I have a great OB! Perimenopause can last 10 years!
I have never been on bcp before and am looking into it for peri. I’m a 37F and have just started experiencing light symptoms. I’m glad to hear it has worked for you…hearing positive stories makes me less anxious to try it. Did you find any other side effects from taking them?
same 41 in peri, symptoms started at 37/38yrs, but on HRT now, my body cannot tolerate the mini pill (progesterone only) anymore - mood swings like nothing I've had before was also getting so low but coming out of the woods now, about to come off patches and start on gel and micronised progesterone which is a more natural, hoping to feel even better and get more focus soon!
@@mariebondar5664 I started on Lo-Loestrin Fe, but I was still having night sweats the week before the placebo days. My OB switched me to Loryna (bit higher estrogen/progesterone content) and told me to skip the placebos altogether. Since then no more night sweats & I’m sleeping through the night (again)
They might not be experts but they share their experiences and it is super valuable. It’s not one over the other is what each can offer in together what is impactful.
I feel so much better now that I'm on the other side. My symptoms were primarily GI. Vomiting and migraines every month, feeling off balance, anxiety, up and down BP. No real hot flashes, night sweats or sleepless nights.
I'm 48! I didn't know what was going on! The night sweats, the 20 day cycle windows, dry skin, dry hair, my sudden inability to process citric acid, insomnia etc. My mother died suddenly last August after learning 19 days prior that she had grapefruit size tumors in her brain. I honestly thought these 'unfortunates' were side effects of my depression/bereavement. But I realize now it is merely a long term drop in visit from menopause.😮💨
I'm 43. I lost my mom in 2019 due to her brain tumor. I was 38 and went downhill after that, now I know that my effects were more than grief. 100% peri. Thankful to now be finding relief 5 years later!
@@erinsmith8702 Goodness! I am sorry to hear about your mother's passing. I realize death is a part of life, but knowing that and feeling the lost are two polar opposite things.
Yes please 🙏🏼!!! I actually started to become aware of of this perimenopause from Drew’s you tube add where she was screaming from the roof top that she had perimenopause 😂. I was like “ wait what?” What the hell is happening to Drew? And I really laughed hard because I thought, Wow! The add is crazy in a good way, it does the job catch the attention and delivers the message, freaking great! Thanks Drew for allowing yourself to be vulnerable, it helps many of us too. From woman to woman I say Thank You! And to the Dr. and the host also thank you bringing this conversation out into the world, we need it. I have been understanding so many things and making adaptations and adjustments. Thanks
Dr. Haver, I am 68, and started menopause at 50. I have never had any type of treatments for menopause, other than eating fruits, vegetables, lean meats, seafood, healthy fats & carbs. I also lift weights and perform cardio five days per week. The last three years has been unbearable - - unable to sleep, averaging 3 to 4 hours per night, severe cravings, night sweats ( thermostat set at ), and loss of libido. My primary care doctor said at 68, it is too late to start menopause treatment. Would you please explain to me why did it take so long for me to begin having menopause symptoms, and is it too late to start hormone therapy?
She is amazing , she has stepped up for women … given her time, expertise and acknowledgment that women havent had the best of care in the past , she is an amazing women doing a fantastic job of educating , PLUS her personality is adorable .

Drew Barrymore is such a sweetheart. I just love her vibes. She is soo gorgeous. I wish she would write also a book about menopause. Please 😊 I’m from Germany and we need to know more about the beginning, how it’s starting , what can happen and so one. But I’m definitely going to check out this book. I’m 41 and I can already feel something is changing and going on. So I have a hunger inside me to get more knowledge on this. 😊

Yes, very disappointing that Dr. Haver didn't get more of a chance to share your wisdom. Not sure why they chose to bring Barrymore in for segment. Why not just have Gayle interview Dr. Haver? A 5-min segment that stayed totally at surface level---very disappointing.
Hi there, Love love all this information and I can not thank you enough. Can you please address endometriosis and how to successfully navigate HRT with this condition, I understand you can’t give strict medical advice and so forth but I really could use some basic information. My understanding is that estrogen can cause my endometriosis lesions to start growing again. I am really hoping to find the right questions to ask , articles to read and care to advocate for myself. I am so grateful for you being on this journey with me so far. Hugs , Wendy
I am in perimenopause now in California and Dr. Mary Claire’s located in Texas and you have to fly in to see her and I think it’s $1100 just to get in the door. It would be nice just to go to a regular primary doctor or a specialist that doesn’t cost a fortune I went to my primary Doctor Who doesn’t know anything about menopause and then I went to an endocrinologist who ran my labs and said oh yeah you’re in perimenopause, but gave me no advice or help on what to do I’m 50 years old. I know I’m in perimenopause, and I have no idea how to treat myself still
Great interview Gayle and Drew!! Gayle and Drew and your follow up report on the topic of menopause has been awesome information!! In “Health Watch OBGYN and menopause specialist Dr. Mary Claire Haver discussed her book “the new menopause “ which Dr. Haver went into the advancement of menopause awareness today versus earlier years in both the medical industry and people’s knowledge of menopause. The open discussion of menopause symptoms such as different types of menopause such as perimenopause Drew has who discussed her interest in Dr. Haver’s view of women having menopause not necessarily being identical to others symptoms and needs. Gayle pointed out Dr. Haver’s medical tool kit which is based on menopause symptoms ,which I I thought was a great idea, along with Dr. Haver’s book having the quote “ menopause is inevitable, suffering is not”. ❤❤
I have breast/prostate cancer survivors in my immediate family and although I am not a BRCA gene carrier, I have also been advised against HRT. I just realized that I was dealing with perimenopause about 4 years ago and it was horrible, there were times I thought I was going crazy. I am now in full menopause, a couple of months ago I was starting to gain weight in my midsection and feeling very sluggish despite consistently exercising 3x a week. So I changed things up. I started doing time restricted eating (eating good foods during my eating window), I gave up diet soda(which I consumed daily), drastically decreased my sugar intake and traded the elliptical machine for weights. I’m on week 6 and I am feeling so much better. My clothes are back to feeling good, I have more energy, more clarity of thought and headaches are gone. I also had a blood panel last week and everything is looking good. Not sure about your options, but talk with your doctor about making other changes to help you along. I imagine hrt to be a magic bullet for most women, but some of us have to make our own magic.😉. I pray that you never have to battle cancer again. Stay brave and strong, be kind to your body and work on doing the best you can with what you’ve been given. 💕
Brianne, ask your doctor if the progesterone can be used vaginally or rectally. I know many women who have had that same issue. I felt the same as you for about a week. I was so groggy, but then it subsided.
Now if every woman doctor in every state would follow this lady's advice us other women might have fighting chance with our health. It sucks that women's health is ignored. I lived with endometriosis for 30 years until last year when a 3rd world South African doctor was working in my local ER finally took me seriously and checked me out. Anywho at age 42 I had a total hysterectomy done and now suffering through menopausel weight gain, night sweats, hot flashes, headaches, backaches, brain fog, flabby skin, muscle loss, hair loss and the list goes on. I just cuss and scream every day and deal with it and go on lol

Try 16+ years of hell. The birth of my third child at almost 36 triggered my hormonal changes. The OB ran a blood test to figure out why I was becoming so cranky. I would cry at commercials & be sweating when it was in the 40s outside. Post partum had my temper volatile. My Sister's aunt began & ended her menopause between age 36 & 38. So it isn't written in stone when & how bad it will be. We are all different. Personally I have known women who didn't experience any of the typical phases like hot flashes. But who suffered depression beyond belief. I love that Dr. Marie Claire Havers is speaking out for women, people need to at least try to be understanding.
