Appreciate your honest and through review of this unit. Have been looking forward to getting one as a scale rig. But now I'm definitely going to have to pass and wait for another option. Thanks Matt and all of the SBG team!
Keep us updated on that front drive issue, ive got one on preorder. Ill probably take it apart and check everything in the tcase, and grease the axles but more knowledge going into it is always better.
I believe this truck would be far more suited as an ultra-scaled truck and just keeping it with the 1.55's 80 mil shocks you could possibly put a roof rack on it and a few scaled bits and pieces And that would pretty much be it however if you were going to go with a much better tire to cope with additional weight I would recommend 1.55 falken widepeak AT3W tires as they would be a far more durable tire that could quite literally handle anything you put it up to
Totally agree and that’s exactly why I bought it . I’m going to scale the heck out of it with accessories and scale stuff . Mine should be here in a couple weeks and I’ve already started ordering accessories . I bought “ Mike “ the Rc4wd guy , found a girl figure that’s about the same size as Mike (it’s a generic eBay girl named Jen that looks like a Lara Croft clone lol ) , some Jeep logos , sleeping bags , camping equipment and of course a scale 6 pack of Corona beer 🍺 . As for tires and wheels I was thinking about getting the Rc4wd Walker Evans 1.55 beadlocks ( the ones with the blue bead ) and some Rc4wd Bfgoodrich tires .
I am so glad I grabbed one these soon as they came out! I just love mine looks amazing and I enjoy running it for sure! Your the man Matt a great inspiration and I love your humor ! One day hope to get chance to meet you one day!
Thank you, another on point presentation, also in 2021! Greetings from the Netherlands. (prev. 'Wacky RC', accidently locked myself out of account) Onwards and upwards 😎👍
Maybe vertical mounted servo’s horn moves 3/4” forward-aft as it swings and horizontal mounted moves up-down 3/4”. 45 degree angle splits the difference. 3/8” up-down & 3/8” for-aft. And the 3/8 is split in half by mounted the servo in the middle of the swing. So you only misaligned 0 to 3/16” max.
The jeep is nice, I got mine a few days ago. The two speed transmission and realistic coil springs that are separate from the shocks are a nice touch, also the body looks cool and caters to us jeep fans but I don't think it has the same level of quality as the gelande II. The plastic suspension mounts on the axles are a weak spot because mine had a broken one out of the box so I bought spares and replaced it. So your link mount did not break due to user error, that is a design flaw with this truck. Also the push button body mounts are a real pain to deal with when removing the body. I like the truck but I think a better option would have been to take the existing gelande II and put a 2 door jeep JK or JL body on it.
I like the way in trail and how nice, the suspension works, filmimg it definitely look great, i like the changes in chassis and layout, the only let down for me is the size, compare to the trail finder.
Very fair review & I agree. I won't be picking this one up. There are lots of good rigs to choose from in the $500 range & unfortunately this isn't one of them.
Thank you for the size comparison! I'd seen this against the Axial JL, but next to the HiLux really does show how much smaller this is... not a problem if you're running it on your own of course, but as you suggest, it might look a little odd alongside other vehicles.
Funny, Greg broke an axle on the Ryft, must be pretty cold out east lol. I think I would be sending an email about that motor mount. Compared to other RC4WD vehicles, this one seemed to lose something between the designers and the production line.
It appears you had the exact same issues I did on my Jorp. LOL. broke both front and rear shock link mounts. and my front wheels are not turning when under load. Hmmmm. The body is a pain to get off for sure. The up side to that is it doesn't come if you roll it. but be careful, the mirrors and windshield wipers and tail light covers DO come off. I mean break. Funny how RC4WD doesn't even sell this vehicle on their website anymore, and parts are very limited. You did a great review and I would have to agree with you on the lacking of quality on some parts.
Nice video as well, thought as well the Jorp as well was a little disappointing as well, but as well they gave it a decent try as well with some new features as well, so all in all, as well, it is a cool truck....yep, you guessed it...as well 😂 - just goofin’ on ya Matt, always enjoy your releases “As well”
I lost it with the ‘Do not attempt to follow’ sticker and the Jorp hand. I thought I didn’t understand the Jeep thing, but I don’t understand the Jorp thing even more. I’ll stick to things I do understand like Ferd Dangers and 60’s Chebby turks. Even if those aren’t 1/9th...yet.🤞
That 'jorp' body look the same as the chinese ones all over ebay. Although they at least have opening doors at least and probably why the odd wheelbase size. Chassis looks decent and hope they offer it separately but sucks that there's more plastic then what rc4wd is known for. Hopefully they'll off aluminum shock hoops etc if this truck goes over well.
The front driveline is still spinning when the wheels stopped, it's gotta be that pinion set screw. Thanks for the review, I'd be pretty let down spending $500 on this rig. I definitely would have assumed all those suspension/link parts were metal. Doesn't make sense. I wanted to use this chassis for an LJ build but between the plastic metal/suspension parts, price tag, and that motor mount... I dunno
Good video, I enjoy your humour. After seeing how poorly designed and built this truck is, I will never buy an rc4wd product now. Thank you for saving me my hard earned money.
That's quite the nasty problem with the motor mount - even with the shim, I still have serious concerns over the gear mesh and how it's ripping on the spur. Hopefully that's a one off problem limited to your kit. I know it's okay for a trail truck, I got to admit I'd def would prefer a lower position for the motor. A bit too bad some detail area's got over locked, but easy enough to correct. Pretty descent looking Jorp Wrongler Rubinot though. :D
I don’t know why with the way things have moved on they still insist on using those rubbish plastic shafts. I don’t care how many additional slots they put in them they are never going to be truly up to the job. And at this price point they should be metal. I understand they want things to break so you pay to upgrade/fix the truck. But I would personally rather just pay my money to personalise my truck with their products. Instead of paying more money to fix problems that shouldn’t exist in the first place.
@@scalebuildersguild thanks for clarifying. Sorry about the rant but I’ve ordered one and I’m a bit sick and tired of the plastic bits breaking☹️ upgrading them is all part of the fun. But I don’t want it to break the very first time I take it out
I just bought one of these from Amain. I’ve been on the fence for along time about one of these and decided to get it before they are all gone. Do you have any idea why they only made one run of these and then discontinued?
I was wanting one of these and going to buy one this week, but now after your review, I’m not sure if I am lol... do you not recommend this for just a trail rig? Don’t understand why the motor plate was bent? I would of sent it back, but you probably got it free for a review anyways. Nice video bro 👌
I'm glad! This review is a personal reflection based on my experience and comparisons to other trucks in this price range, not everybody will agree with me, and that's fine. Enjoy your Black Rock!
@@scalebuildersguild I agree with the points you made in the video especially the bit about inner fenders, also the body mounts start to get easier the more you take the body on and off. I had my reservations about this rig when I first got into it after unboxing it but after driving it a couple times it is quickly becoming one of my favorites. Oh and as to the scale of the truck, it looks good next to a SWB tf2 with the Tamiya Jeep body.
I'm not sure if this was discussed in the comment...sorry if it was and I missed. I'm new-ish to RC. You mention 1/9th scale. Does this imply that most, or some, 1/10 scale models are actually 1/9? Thanks and love the channel.
Absolutely right Tom, more often than not, the 1/10 moniker is applied without actually doing any real world measuring. The Tamiya/Rc4wd Hilux body and the Axial Wrangler JL are two good examples of actual 9th scale.
It looks nice BUT I dunno lol, seems like a strange truck from RC4WD, without the logos you could think it was someone trying to copy RC4WD and keep the costs down with more plastic, motor mount (which id rather have a steel plate as I can see those lugs cracking at some point), unlicensed body is fair enough as that can be cheap to get approved. But for the money I'd go for a Mojave or Landy.
I was thinking the same thing. Looked like he could have doubled that shim or maybe put the motor plate in a vice or something. But as you said maybe some was camera.
Dude... Land cruisers and Nissan patrols/safaris run shock and coil all round so plenty of versatility... Bloody yanks forgetting the rest of the world 😂
And here you are assuming I'm American! 😉 But you're mostly right, I didn't give much thought to the Patrol. 80 series had radius arms, so those are out!
PLASTIC!!!!!!!!.....thats a deal breaker for me...the hole reason I started messing with RC4wd was the fact of 99% metal chassis....this is the review I have been looking for..good job...thank you
So where did this second grille rumor come from? That's all I've been reading and now that you've revealed this "second grille" I'm a little disappointed and from some of the other issues, especially the size it makes me ever more disappointed because I ordered two of them..
Gear mesh looks off...shock towers to shocks are heavily angled and too much plastic where metal links would be preferred. Motor way to high. Not RC4WD's best design. G made is looking pretty good now...
After seeing you convert the motor mount assembly into a rocking chair with a few simple tweaks my enthusiasm for this release further waned. 😬
that was the moment for me too.
yikes
thats nice they gave you the option to make bevel gears with your pinion and spur
RC4WD's response.. "Can't Please 'Em All" lol fitting hat for the review.. I like it haha.
Finally .. a person who actually says it how it is, Nickel Metal Hydride instead most people saying “Nim”. Thank you 🙏
I appreciate the scale chassis design, but your right, all things considered this should be a bangood truck.
I lost it when you pulled the grill 😂. Jorp life!!
Appreciate this honest review.
From this review, you've proven it to be a legit Jeep hahaha. Well done Matt.

The front driveline is still spinning when the wheels stop which likely means its the pinion set screw coming loose.
@@D1Rk379 or just the typical rc4wd ring and pinion

Nice turck. Turps and jurps. This is the perfect truck for him. Almost an open diff.
Thanks Matt for the review on it! I just wonder how many Mini Jorp Wronglers Josh will add to collection🤣
Stuffing it into the well awesome
The angled servo might be for scale looks. I believe on a real Wrangler the steering arm ( the servo horn on our RC's) is also at an angle.
Thank you, another on point presentation, also in 2021! Greetings from the Netherlands.

Makes a Redcat look almost as good as Vanguish!
So cool 👍😊👍
For the price of RC4WD stuff the quality control seems crappy!
@Steve Vento that axial " hunk of plastic" handles better, doesn't break, and they're licensed!
I own a Jeep Gladiator. It is not a Rubicon model. I now know what decals I want to put on the hood.
Hittin the chains with your disc but no basket
Can't wait to see what 3D printed options become available for this🤔

Jorp Wrongler Rubinot.
That’s funny right there.
Check the ring and pinion gear mesh on the front axle
Yep, that's what it was.

What kit is that 9th scale Wrangler when comparing the sizes?
its a shame about the problems and the lack of inner fenders in the rtr... the movement of the suspension and body look decently scale in the videos
Front slipping has happened to me, was just a loose drive shaft
Sadly, this turned out to be a ring gear.
Bring back the rc 10 i wana see that run so I can get my gradpa to get his together and scrape that chasie
Hey, you can see the front driveshaft spinning, when the front wheels weren't. Must be the diff?
I have deduced that it is the ring and pinion.

I like the new skid plate but I don't think the shock mount should break that easy even in cold weather
Watching closely you can see the front drive shaft spinning when it kicks out.
Yep, ring and pinion in the front axle.
Is there a jeep front grille that can be installed on it?
When under load and the front tires aren’t spinning you can see the front drive shaft spin so it’s not the the transfer case
I don’t know why with the way things have moved on they still insist on using those rubbish plastic shafts. Not a driveshaft problem, turned out to be a ring gear/locker.

Hahahahahahaha!!!! It a HEEP!!!! Charging use the sun is going to be your best comment of the year, I'm predicting it now!!!!🤣🤣🤣🤣

way off topic thought. Would these axles be a good swap for the mst cfx jimny?
Depends entirely on the link mount locations!
Rubinot 🤣🤣
Buy wholesale from bangood slap rc4wd stickers on put in rc4wd box now thats a great business model!
Looks cool Matt. I think the Trail Finder 2 regular wheel base bodies will work as well. Arent they 11.7 or something?
They're 11.3, and neither the Chevy or the Mojave had coils and shocks for suspension.
I just bought one of these from Amain. I’ve been on the fence for along time about one of these and decided to get it before they are all gone. Do you have any idea why they only made one run of these and then discontinued?

Certainly a good trail truck! I’m sure once they ramp up production a lot of these issues go away.
Few fries short of a happy meal
That kinda looks like the old new bright Jeep jk body.
Looks like, isn’t. This one is way smaller.
I'm shopping for something like this, but I have a question: why would I buy this rather than an SCX10 III or TRX4?
You’d be better off with either of those choices, unless you’re dead set on a scale chassis design.
What's with the blur when you showed the under side of the body?
Camera glitch maybe?
Wow man the pinion and spur are not level with each other at all. Wow gotta fix that
