  • If you own a Pontiac G6 convertible and your unlucky enough to have the hydraulic pump reservoir go empty with the top down, here is how to refill it. Be prepared to lose a little skin.
Every manual and instruction calls for GM P/N 88901975 as the fluid to use. However, it is impossible to find this fluid. Searching the internet... a lot... I was able to find an alternative that seems to be the correct substitute. The Amazon link (below) shows the substitute.
    Amazon: amzn.to/2Kn0myp
I did additional searching concerning what I used in the video. This is what is shown on the manufacturer's (Pentosin) web site. The only thing I found different was the green color added. Here's the link:
    Amazon: amzn.to/2VJr61h
All of the outdoor video was made using a GoPro Hero7 Black. This is an amazing camera. I have another video camera (Cannon and of course my smartphone) but I don't think I'll use anything besides my GoPro because it is so small and easy to use. They have come down in price too. Here's a link to check it out for yourself: (this is the exact "bundle" I bought for myself.)

Mine was suck down. I was able to refill it using your plan. It took about half of a quart. I had to press the button and hold it until it times out about 7-8 times before it finally caught and lifted up. It times out half way up and had to be pressed again. Once it all locked in place I was able to see that one of the hydraulic cylinder was leaking. I guess it's a hard top for now. Thanks for the help.

I started with a simple batwing cable replacement also, but now it wont get past the trunk going up, then stopping. I have to wait until gravity pulls the trunk down, usually two days, then try again. This time I heard the groaning like it was low on fluid, so I will try what your video shows. For your problem, I would think the cap would have to be on for it to be able to build pressure to lift the top.

Will someone PLEASE take a video of the lift mechanisms and post them. I need to replace the trunk cover mechanism on a used model that was missing it. Not fully sure where everything goes, cables, etc. Would really help.

OK mine let me down on a nice sunny day that was only 32 actual degrees. My top was down. I could hear the motor running, I was able to go to the passenger side of the car and slowly lift the trunk (like it would when the top was moving in process, reverse open). I had to have some one sit inside with car running and push the button. After the trunk lid was reverse open all the way up, the top fortunately began to function. and the roof part came up. It DID NOT lock in place at the front windshield, so I had to back and forth the switch several times, but not far enough to lift the top again. 3 tries I believe and it finally locked. UNLESS you have a garage and want to leave it in roadster top down mode, you need to fix this issue asap. or figure out how to make it a manual. Mine also would not let the trunk open normal to access the hydro pump. Seems one of the issues is the cargo top switch which is no longer made, so off to a junk yard if I can find one. FYI Mercedes, Saab and Lexus (Toyota and GM designed this when they were making cars together, compare the solara/lexus sc to a g6 or a saab-not a hardtop) all used the same HARDTOP CONVERTIBLE design and may have parts that interchange, I believe the Volvo, VW and Mopar (sebring and cross tour) also did but have never seen their parts nor have i worked on them. Any of these now old hardtop convertible cars will have old and possibly failing hydraulic systems with parts NO LONGER MADE. So unless you can rebuild it yourself or retro fit something a junk yard is a roll of dice away. Good luck fixing it. Mine never got fixed and the top is up, locked in place.

Hey, keep running it back and forth it will go up after filling it all the way. I thought the pump was out. Just keep going back and forth. Takes 3/4 quart of STP hydraulic Jack oil at auto zone. Took at least 15 or more times running back and forth just to start moving.

Just had same thing happen on my 2006 G6, top down trunk lid would not reverse unlatch. Ended up taking to GMC dealer to get the roof put up so I could get to all the hydraulics. Took them a week but they got the top up. Main cylinder on passenger side had a bad leak, even with a full reservoir the leak was so bad the top would not move. This G6 only has 20,000 miles but it is 14 yrs old. I had checked all the cylinders for leaks just 6 weeks before and had no signs of a leaks or wetness. Anyway $970 bill from dealer to get the top up!, they quoted me $2200 total to have them replace the cylinder with a re manufactured one or $4400 to replace all seven cylinders. Paid the $970 brought it home and had the passenger main lift cylinder out in about 45 min. Sent it to Top Hydraulics to rebuild.

See my post here for this video to get the top UP, I also had the cargo cover switch go bad which refused to let me open the trunk normally(even after the top was up). I had to unplug the battery, let the car drain all residual power, turn on headlight after unplugs and let sit for 15 minutes. This will also erase the computer memory, engine codes and possibly the radio presets. Once it has you may have a small chance to get the trunk open, before the car relearns codes. Mine also did not want to lock the top down, until I did this. Once I got the trunk open I put the cargo cover in place there is a small switch on one side that uses a pressure button as a safety device, once worn out it needs to be replaced (with junk yard part as new is not available), retrofitted or bypassed (NO safety switch and circuit always on- I do not recommend). I also removed the spare tire, jack and such, cause if you can't get in the trunk they are useless, plus I have run flat tires (designed to run even if flat for a short time)

It needs to self bleed. Keep pressing it. It’ll eventually give you a message saying top motor overheated. Let it cool and try again.

We have an 06 and the fuse box is under the hood on the drivers side. It's a black plastic box. Press the two tabs and lift the top off. On the underside of the cap is the index to the fuses. The power windows and top use the same fuse. It's numbered 50 on the diagram

I really liked this car but after seeing so many tops having issues. I'm so over this car. Pontiac should of had an easier fix for the top or a manual switch to at least operate it when failure were to arrise. This appears to be a common problem with so many of these tops on the g6 model. Unbelievable.
