  • The best golf irons over the last five years include the PING G425, TaylorMade P790, and Titleist T100. Each of these golf irons comes from a different category and will best fit different players, but they've been exceptional in the 2nd Swing fitting bays.
    In this video, 2nd Swing master fitters Thomas Campbell and Danny Ferrell discuss their favorite golf irons over the last five years in the players iron, players-distance iron, and game-improvement iron categories. Then, Thomas and Danny do some light testing to showcase the differences in performances.

    I play Wilson Staff D7 Forged R steel and Ping G400 R Graphite. Very different clubs but I like them both equally for different reasons. I play the Wilsons in wind for lower trajectory and roll out on certain courses and pings for the height and spin on nice days. This is what works best for me - I am 9.5 handicap. Great video thank you.

    I would love to see you do a comparison of Mizuno 225 vs 790 in terms of distance, ball speed, distance consistency, spin, height, decent angle and forgiveness.
    Also, do you think the Mizuno 225 compares more with the P790 or P770 ?

    My previous irons were the Ping G25. I loved these clubs but decided to get fitted for Ping G425s. After three rounds I sold the G425’s and went back to my G25’s. The reason, believe it or not, was because the sharp sound hurt my ears on off center hits. I’m sure this was due to the settings on my hearing aids but not something I could live with. Next I tried Titleist T300 and love them. Forgiving, long and easy to hit. They are approximately 2* stronger than my Ping G25 but easy to adjust to.
    Edited: I played the Titleist awhile but went back to my G25s. You can’t beat the feel.

    One thing to remember, however, is that if you add or remove loft you also are adding and removing bounce at the bottom of the club. It may not matter a lot depending on your swing but on the other hand it may. More bounce typically means more forgiveness.

    I recently ordered Sub 70 699 Pro 5-PW. I hit some TM P790 against 699 demo clubs and they were pretty much identical in feel and performance. I went with Sub 70 because I was able to upgrade the shaft ($ Taper 100) and the grips and still be half the price ($654 delivered) of the Taylor Made. I feel like we as a golf community don’t understand fliers very well. It can’t be as simple as loft because Thomas would be hitting an extra club with the t100 to keep up and voila the loft is essentially the same. I’m certainly familiar with a low spin shot that goes 10 yards further but there seems to be some myths or uncertainty about how much the club design influences it.

    • @dmkfactor1721
      @dmkfactor1721 2 роки тому +1

      I asked the PGA Pro I take lessons from, and he explained it to me like this. He said that it can be lie dependent, where sometime you’ll have contact where grass is in between your club and ball and it causes it to “jump.” When it comes to a flier lie out of the fairway he said it’s less to do with lofts and more to do with the quality of strike! He equated it to how far do you think a tour pro could hit your club! They’d hit it a lot further due to the quality of their strike, and they’re just better at compressing the ball and hitting the center of the face. It’s kind of dumb luck he said, and you get a shot where your swing and strike absolutely perfectly and goes farther than your normal! Hope that helps! I was worried about that too when I decided to get new clubs and he went through my fitting with me!

    • @2ndswing
      @2ndswing  2 роки тому

      Agree with all that @Dmkfactor said. Quite simply a better ball striker should not use a game improvement iron. Also high speed golfers that need forgiveness present inconsistency challenges as when they hit it the ball will go crazy far but when they don't strike the middle it's going to be varying in distance more - Thomas

    I think it would be cool to see you guys compare a heavily used driver and brand new driver of the same model to see if there is performance difference. The model that comes to mind is the 2017 M2 just because it’s still easy to get it new. Find a heavily used one. Hopefully by a stronger player. And see if the face degradation/etc has any noticeable difference. I haven’t seen anyone document this in a test. Supposedly drivers and presumably other woods or hybrids get hotter with use. Is it actually enough to actually affect performance?

  • @paulgouge1896
    @paulgouge1896 2 роки тому

    The only no that matters is the loft but manufacturers only put that on wedges. Most 'modern game imorovement' irons go through a loft range 1 degree less than my 'traditional' Mizuno sets but do it with only 7 clubs to my 8, meaning bigger distance gaps, usually from 7-w. This makes 'blending' sets difficult as two clubs with similar lofts have different no. / same no, different loft. The objective in last 'fitting' was to change shafts and fitter wanted me to test new clubs and I did but compared the 6 iron with my 5 (same loft) and I stayed with my clubs with new shafts, swapped Project X 5.5 for Nippon Modus3 120 S. Cheaper and better, my handicap now coming back closer to where it was prior to injuries.

      Really hard to beat the G425s. Best choice here IMO.

      Ping all day any day for a beginner! Always the most forgiving! I’m pretty sure the majority of serious golfer have had a set of Pings somewhere early in their golfing lives! I have a smile right now thinking back to my Ping eye 2s that I learned to play with!

    Thomas must have serious FOGL on the course with that low spin. As a low spin player, I'm always in fear of nuking one over the green and the worst stuff is always over the green seems like.

      I'm sure his spin is waaaay higher than that on grass mats take off so much spin I bet he's above 6000 RPM with 7 iron

    • @2ndswing

      Spin is definitely higher now mid 6000's. The mat does have something to do with it (attack angle) - Thomas

    5500 spin on a 7 iron with the T100 isn’t a lot of spin. My 30 year old Tommy Armour 845 7 iron spins more than that. I would hate to get less spin than that and need to hold a green.

    • @2ndswing
      @2ndswing  2 роки тому

      845 for sure is going to spin more than that. There is 2* more loft on the 7iron. - Thomas
