WHY immigrant clubs are about more than football

  • Football and immigration - two things that played a huge role in making Germany what it is today. And the two fit together as well - Germany has hundreds of football clubs founded by immigrants. In Munich, Türkgücü München have made history by becoming the first of these sides to ever play at a fully professional level. While this ambitious club mixes it up in the 3. Liga, countless smaller sides like FC Polonia or SV Norden-Nordwest in Berlin act as points of pride and community centers for immigrants around the country. Kick off! reporter Dave Braneck travels the nation to see how immigrant football clubs shape German football and society.

    See the problem with Türkgücü is by no means their name, their logo or their identity. Sure there are racist douchebags who hate Türkgücü due to that, and that‘s disgusting. It‘s just another plastic club. They had less than 500 fans in attendances on average in the fourth division last year. They don‘t have a big fan base, that‘s been filling up stadiums every season no matter what division like Essen, Aachen, Cottbus, Offenbach, the two Leipzig sides, and many more, that are all stuck in the fourth tier because the number of places in the professional league is limited. And one of those highly desired places is going to a club that, two years ago was just another irrelevant amateur side, and that is just there because some millionaire felt like owning a new toy. Being able to spend big bucks (without ever accomplishing something to be in that position) in the sixth division, welp there goes the fair competition. Talking about being the number 2 in Munich when literally no one, even in Munich, knew them just a year ago, and about the Champions League before ever playing a game in the third division... that‘s just ridiculous

      also if you criticize them they will call you a nazi because they have no arguments to counter yours and because they are turks and you are german.... I hate them for always playing the victim... I have all the rights to dislike them especially since I am a bayern munich fan and our second team plays derbys against them in the 3rd division

    • @Lexrezende
      @Lexrezende 3 роки тому

      @Alex Kanyima And where did you identified these things? I didn't see any political worries in any answer but yours. I saw people saying that technically some clubs could be considered immigrant clubs because they were founded by imigrants (and they are right, technically they could) to what I replied saying that, in my opinion, what makes a club an immigrant club in practice, is the ties with the colony (the immigrant comunity living in the country), not only the nationality of those who have founded the clubs, because many of them didn't have the intention to create an immigrant club, but just a club, while others had the will to found a club that represented their immigrant community and create ties with it. I still can't see where is the polarization or the identity politics content.

    Was quite surprised and heartened to have Australian football mentioned. For well over a century, football in Australia has been dominated by immigrant clubs. Be it by Scottish clubs from C. 1900 to C. 1939, with Greek, Italian, Dutch and Croatian clubs being the dominate groups from the post-war era into around the 1980s where clubs were forced to superficially sacrifice their community identities in order to appeal to "all Australians"...
    My own club South Melbourne was founded by a merger of an English club (South Melbourne United) and the recently created Hellas, itself a club created by the merging of two Greek clubs. Currently, a committee of 35 clubs are working towards a second national division and instituting promotion and relegation at a national level. Most of these 35 clubs have some sort of "ethnic" association and many of them formally played at a national level prior to the A-League. Furthermore, Optus Sport, the main football streaming service here has been producing a series of videos looking at the role of immigrants in football here. One of their videos includes the role of Germans.

    I'm not living in Germany, but I got a point about the immigrants clubs. I have a problem with the immigrants teams in the professional leagues like Bundesliga, Bundesliga 2, abd 3 Liga, That these teams won't help the immigrants integrate into the society and the new country they're in, like for example Turkgucu München, is a team in the 3.Liga, let us say that I'm a German from Turkish descents and I'm living in Frankfurt which team should I support? Turkgucu München or Eintracht Frankfurt? If I chose Turkgucu than I'm doing something that won't make me integrate into the German society and that would give the chance to the racists. But if there are amateur immigrants teams then it's okay.
    I'm open to any discussion, because I could be wrong.

    I think the real interesting stories about immigrant clubs arent in Germany. In Sweden, several immigrant clubs have been participating in the top flight. Assyriska FF founded by Assyrian immigrants, Syrianska FC founded by Cyriak immigrants and Dalkurd FF founded by Kurdish immigrants. Assyriska FF even reached a club final, so they actually had an immigrant club one game away from European football. Immigrant clubs are a much bigger part of Swedish football than they ever have been in Germany.

      Brazil has, probably, the most successfull immigrant clubs in the world: Vasco da Gama (Portugal), Palmeiras (Italy) and Cruzeiro (Italy). All three won national leagues and south american championship (Copa Libertadores). I think Vasco da Gama has the most interesting history of them, because it is the only club considered big (we have 12 big clubs) that started in the last division and conquered his place among the best and because it was the first considered big to accept poor and black players, being kicked of Rio de Janeiro league because of that, after being champion (in the year of its debut in the first division) and refusing to expel 12 poor or black players as the other clubs (feeling humiliated) demanded.
      Demography is also important in this history. 20% of Rio de Janeiro population was composed by portuguese, 31% by sons and daughters of portuguese man or woman in the time the club was founded. Only Lisbon has more portuguese inhabitants than Rio de Janeiro. All other portuguese cities had less portuguese inhabitants than Rio de Janeiro.

    Vasco da Gama is probably the club with a national and a continental title that has the deepest ties with the founder immigrants country in the world. Palmeiras and Cruzeiro were founded by Italians (both were called Palestra Italia before second war, when they were forced to change their names and become more brazilian and less italian), but I don't think many italians know that. Vasco da Gama, on the other hand, is well known in Portugal and club membership is accepted as prove of ties with the portuguese colony in the process to one obtain portuguese nationality by the Portuguese Consulate in Brazil.
    In the time the club was founded, 20% of Rio de Janeiro population was composed by portuguese immigrants. The second city in the world in number of portuguese inhabitants. Only Lisbon had more portuguese people than Rio de Janeiro.
    31% of the city population was composed by sons and daughters of portuguese fathers or mothers. It means 51% of Rio de Janeiro population formed a giant portuguese colony that have influenced the city and the country culture and history.
    Vasco da Gama has also a great role in football history in Brasil, because it was the first mass club to accept poor and black people (in the year Vasco would become a mass club) when football was a racist and elitist sport in Brazil. The club was kicked out from the Rio de Janeiro league (there were no national championship until the 1960s) because Vasco refused to exclude 12 of its players (the poor or black ones) that had won the Rio de Janeiro championship in 1923, the same year they debuted in the first division. It is the only brazilian club considered big to begin its history in the last division.
    Brazil had an enourmous immigration process and have many colony clubs, mostly portuguese or italian. The biggest portuguese colony clubs are Vasco da Gama (Rio de Janeiro), Portuguesa (São Paulo) and Tuna Luso-brasileira (Maranhão). The biggest italian colony clubs are Palmeiras (Sâo Paulo), Cruzeiro (Minas Gerais) and Juventus (São Paulo). There are also some small german colony clubs in the south.
