Cheap mechanical disc brakes: ZRace BR-005 Calipers

  • Last year I reviewed a number of different mechanical disc brake calipers, including a set of hybrid hydraulic disc brake calipers from Zrace. They performed pretty well, but they had some flaws.
I recently received my L-Twoo RX 12 speed groupset in the post, and included in it, was a set of ZRace BR-005 calipers. They appear to be an upgraded version of the calipers I reviewed last year, and they seemed to have fixed the two main issues with them that I raised during the review.
Now I may have had nothing to do with this, but it’s encouraging to see that they are improving their products and dealing with their shortcomings.
The full video comparing the mechanical disc brake calipers can be found here: • Mechanical Disc Brakes...

Yeah they seem to be a decent upgrade. What I didn't show is that they are a bit heavier, but that could be good soaking up some heat on ling descents. I'll have to get them on the bike and see

Installed them on the bike, and I am impressed! They feel 2x more powerfull than br002’s. I can do a stoppie and lift up the back wheel! Never thougt that can happen with a mechanical disc brakes 😮
Rear wheel can be locked in effortlessly.
This comes really close to real hydro’s. But I dont have any need to upgrade, finally an end of the road for finding “the brakes” for me 😊

I had to cut a bit off the adjustment bolt on the older zrace ones to fit them into my frame which was clearly designed for hydraulic only….

Yeah the fitment on the older ones was a bit tight, so I can see why you might have had to do this!

This is my brakes on my budget aero bike, but it has a dif name “ferrino” but same build and pretty identical. It is some issues on shifter lever if u will not tighten or pre loading the cable from the caliper but the power overall is great, this brake saved my ass when theres a vehicle cut the lane in front of me.

I wanted to buy some Aero wheels but was worried about cross winds so wanted to pick up some undulating carbon wheel rims. The cheapest I found was Princeton wake 6560 for £3000, an Aliexpress bike store coincidentally named prince bike store sells the same design and weight for £344 so I had to pull the trigger. Would be cool if you could check it out since it will save weight and increase stability in cross winds.

I have the same Tektro md-c550 brakes on my bike and they work well enough so I've been hesitant to try one of these hybrid hydraulic brake setups. Pending Trace Velo's review I may give these a go. The price and improved design are defintely enticing.

I think these are the same as the Onirii ones I have for next build. I think the other improvement, depending on your frame, is moving the piston / cable engagement inboard. Depending on where / how the frame routes the cable you can end up with quite a tight S bend on the rear calliper.
