Rattling sounds in a piano can be caused by various issues. Here are some common reasons and possible solutions:
      1. Loose Parts
Loose screws or bolts: Check if any screws or bolts on the piano are loose, particularly around the action and the case.
Loose action parts: Parts of the action mechanism, such as hammers, dampers, or whippens, might be loose.
      2. Strings and Tuning Pins
Loose strings: Sometimes, a string might be slightly loose, causing a rattling sound when struck.
Loose tuning pins: The tuning pins might be loose, affecting the tension of the strings.
      3. Soundboard Issues
Cracked soundboard: A crack in the soundboard can cause vibrations that result in a rattling sound.
Loose ribs or bridges: The ribs or bridges on the soundboard might be loose.
      4. Action and Hammer Problems
Worn or damaged hammers: Worn or damaged hammer felts can cause an uneven strike, leading to rattling sounds.
Misaligned hammers: Hammers that are not aligned properly might strike the strings unevenly.
      5. Foreign Objects
Objects inside the piano: Small objects like paper clips, pencils, or other debris might have fallen inside the piano, causing rattling sounds when certain keys are pressed.
      6. Pedals and Trapwork
Loose pedal mechanism: The pedals or the connecting mechanism (trapwork) might be loose or misaligned.
Pedal noise: Pedals themselves can sometimes cause noise if not properly adjusted.
      7. Temperature and Humidity Changes
Wood expansion or contraction: Changes in temperature and humidity can cause the wood components of the piano to expand or contract, leading to loose joints or parts.
      Troubleshooting Steps:
Visual Inspection: Open the lid and visually inspect the interior of the piano for any obvious loose parts or foreign objects.
Check Specific Keys: Identify which keys cause the rattling and inspect the associated hammers, dampers, and strings.
Tighten Loose Screws: Use a screwdriver to gently tighten any loose screws or bolts.
Professional Help: If you're unable to identify or fix the issue, consider contacting a professional piano technician.
Addressing these issues can help eliminate the rattling sound and restore the piano's proper function.

@@Spiker985Studios 1. The most common place for a string to break is in the upper part of the piano, above the action. There are multiple parts in the way of the string, so its impossible for it to just flail around.

      3. There are 2 near each other and one too far to be affected.

    Three suggestions
    1) coil the string on a dummy pin. It saves wear and tear on the pinblock
    2) don’t let the becket come out the other side of the tuning pin. It’s sloppy and not recommended.
    3) give it a twist in the direction of the string, or risk voiding the warranty of the new string. It can lead to buzzing later on

When strings start breaking with no real reason why, all the strings need to be replaced. It is usually caused by metal fatigue and corrosion.
It is possible that all three broke at once because the force of one breaking took out the others. Depends on how loud the bang was.
I had a few strings spontaneous break on a baby grand piano in my house that hadn't been used in months. They broke in the middle of the night and scared the $*** out of me. A little while later, another one broke, so I losened all of strings and called a piano restorer to come restring the entire piano and service it. Was told that they will break in sequence because the force on them increases as the one next to them fails. I did the right thing by loosening them, because the breaking of strings can damage other parts.

Why are people "blaming" a kid for breaking the strings? She played the piano, she didn't open it up and cut them. Instuments are meant to be played, professional players will play keys VERY hard, strings are NOT meant to last forever. I've 100% picked up guitars and gave them a quick Wonderwall treatment and gotten cut by an old string or two.
Like, it's just so odd to me the amount of people coming to comment ONLY that "that little girl MUST have been doing something she shouldn't have!!" Girl was playing the PIANO.

  • @ursafan40

    Three things.
First, this makes changing strings on my guitar seem less of a pain
Second, I didn't see an underwrap on the string. When I string my guitar, I make sure the first wrap goes under the string, so the next wraps going over the string will "lock" the string in place better. Prevents slipping and tuning issues.
Is that not a problem with the tuning posts on a piano?
Third,do you pull on and stretch the strings after tuning, then retune, stretch, retune....etc until the string no longer stretches? Settles in.
If you don't stretch guitar strings when first installed they will go out of tune constantly until they stretch as far as they are going to.

The other strings were probably already broken. You can see that the note to the left has two broken strings. Those notes have two strings, so one can break; there's still one string for the note, and the customer might not notice. But the third failed string was a single string on a note that already had a broken string. That's my guess.

I dont even know how pianos work, but the top comment saying that the person just didn't even notice sounds strange to me. Maybe because they were flat/sharp keys that never got played? Idk

They tried to tune it themselves and overtightened it.

Realmente raro por que, no se ve que haya óxido en las cuerdas ni como que un ratón se halla hecho sus necesidades en las cuerdas del piano...a lo mejor defectos en el núcleo de a cuerda...

Do you not replace both strings in the bi-chord to match them better? The unison will be a pain I fear

Eother they didn't realize the first two were broken, or all three were weak, and one breaking whipped the other two and broke them along with it.

Haunted House. We have the same problem with guitars always being sharp a note or two after sitting overnight.👻

On guitars, the strings strech when you install them. Does this happen to this massive piano strings too? Does that mean you have to come over again to correct it?

It was probably caused by a Doberman Pincher infestation. If this doesn't make sense to you look up the Jerky Boys and one of their older crank phone call routines. Like all their routines it was a recording of an actual crank phone call. In this case it was to a piano tuner. The caller described the problem to the technician. Their Doberman had fallen down into the back of the piano and was trapped their.
I never really cared for the Jerky Boys, but my nephew did and he played this recording for me. I have to admit that it was hilarious. Check it out.
I just looked it up. I was wrong. It was a Rottweiler.

As others have correctly said, it’s likely two were already broken and the third happened to be heard. I’m a piano tech with 9 years experience. Sometimes technicians will break strings and not tell clients if they don’t have time or don’t want to replace them. If I come to a piano with broken strings, I always immediately, before doing any tuning, show the client and ask if they are aware of it.
If they want it replaced I will either order a custom bass/tenor replacement string, or, if I don’t have my stringing kit with me, make an appointment to replace at a later date.
Learn from my mistakes - be careful carrying much wire with you around in the car if you don’t intend to either bring it in every night or at each stop. My state is very humid and wire corrodes quickly if left in that kind of environment.
If I’m going to a tuning on a performance piano, or a very old piano, I will bring wire with me. Otherwise I make separate appointments to deal with broken strings.
And as I’m sure you know - proceed with caution on pitch raising if that many strings have broken, it’s a sign they may be getting brittle and losing elasticity.🫣

Homie for us guitar guys we stretch the strings and then tune and then stretch and then tune again. I personally do it for my stuff 5 times for each string. Do y’all piano people do or don’t stretch the strings?

The reason why the string broke is because of tuning too much tuning will cause the strings tube break

I've done that on a guitar so many times, it's cool to see that it's a nearly identical process on the piano!
