  • There are different forms of Marriage in Tiv land
    YAMSHE: a marriage by exchange of Sisters, this was practised by our forefathers. Two men used to exchange their sisters or families exchange their daughters as wives.
    KWASE TSUEN: a marriage by capture. A man would forcefully snatch a girl or the family would do so for their son. It is still practised in some remote parts of Tiv land.
    IYE: it is courtship or dating in Tiv land. The man finds a girl and visit her home more often and presents some gifts to his family. Sometimes the girl elopes with the man and sometimes it ends up by the man paying her bride price before taking her home.
    KWASE-KEMEN: a marriage that is practice now in Tiv land, marriage by bride price. After a long time of courtship, the man goes to see the family of the girl and pay the money and presents the items the family of the girl listed.
    CHURCH MARRIAGE: Most marriages now in Tiv land concluded in the Church, this is done after Kemen (Traditional Marriage)
