Yeah, 3-gatsu no Lion, my favourite anime ! Lemme answer some of your questions here (without spoiling anything) : 3-gatsu no Lion is a slice of life, drama and comedy Rei Kiriyama (the protagonist) is a professional shogi player (a japanese game really similar to chess), that's how he earns money He lives by himself in an apartement (which you can see a few times in the openings) The three girls are all sisters. They're not blood related to Rei however they're really close (I could explain you why, but that might be a minor spoiler) The grandpa shown is the openings is the three girls' grandpa (but I guess you already deduced that thanks to the picture in the 4th opening) The plot, summarized : Rei Kiriyama is a young shogi player, but he actually suffers from severe depression. The whole anime is about how Rei will overcome this and will evolve by interacting with other persons (mostly shogi rivals/friends and, of course, the three sisters and their grandpa)(by the way, Rei is the main character but so are the three sisters). Shogi is quite important in the story since it's Rei's "passion", but this anime emphasizes way more on the characters themselves Now, how can I describe this anime in one word ? : *FEELS* Of course, the anime's technical features are really important (incredible soundtrack, fantastic animation and artstyle), but it's definitively the characters that make this anime exceptionnal They feel real, their emotions feel real. They all have distinct and strong personnalities, just like real persons. I'm not afraid to state this anime has one of the best character writing I've ever seen. And since the characters feel so real, this anime hits you really hard. You'll laugh a lot, but you'll also cry a lot, like, A LOT. And not because of melodramatic stories like the ones you can find in Anohana or Violet Evergarden for example (great anime, but let's admit they're clearly tearjerkers (which isn't a bad thing, but you can feel that their goal is to make you cry (and they succeed))). For those who have already watched the anime, you already know what I'm talking about, especially when it comes to a certain arc in the second season So, if you want to F E E L, I highly reccomand you to watch March comes in like a Lion And, speaking of great character writing, I also suggest you to watch "Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu" openings. It's on the same level as 3-gatsu !
@@lampad4549 Not really. 3-gatsu is realistic. It's real problems happening. Real feelings. They are not trying to make you cry, you just cry because it's so relatable. It's not like other fabricated tragic anime, where you know from start that main is dying for example (tho some of this type can be great, like Taiyou no Uta - live action movie with YUI (singer of FMA:Brotherhood opening 1) playing main role.) But like, Plastic Memories or Anohana are basically that. From the start, it's made only to make you cry. 3-gatsu is made mainly to learn how to live and change your life and overcome depression. Which makes people cry.
This is my favorite anime of all time by far, the characters in this show feel like real people and because of that anytime something good happens to them you stare at the screen smiling like a goofball and a lot of the times you even cry out of happiness, but on the other hand anytime something bad happens it feels like you heart is getting ripped apart, it's just a very powerful show and I can't recommend it enough
It's not sad. It's wholesome. It's like an anti-depressant. Tailor made for those suffering from chronic depression. It's for young adults suffering through isolation. It's for those procrastinate through it all but just need one push to change not just their life but others around them. It's for those who feel homesick all the time but cannot bring themselves to go back home. It's for those who don't have a family but desperately want one. It's for those who want to experience the very essence of true love. It's for those who have had to sacrifice their dreams for survival. It's for those who want to take responsibility but don't know how to handle the stress that it brings. It's for those who suffer from the backlash that their relentless empathy brings to them in this brutal yet beautiful world. It's for those who are a sucker for art and poetic storytelling. It's for those who have had to suffer bullying at some point and still want a closure. It's for those who want to explore what goes on in a bully's mind. It's for those who have lost someone important in their life and want to say that final goodbye, if only just as a few drops of tears under the guidance of a wholesome show. It's for those who sometimes spend their free time on learning various things about psychology and like to psychoanalyze their favorite characters. It's for those who value empathy over criticism. It's for those who want to pit an end to having suicidal thoughts and need that final push to appreciate the beauty of life. It's for those who unfortunately cannot make meaningful connections with people around them but still want to experience how it feels like. It's for those who know what it feels like to grow up in poverty and thus appreciate the vital importance of familial bonds. It's for those who have had to share one meal with their whole family in times of crisis. It's for those who want deeper connection with their parents but don't know how to muster courage and take that first step. It's for those who ran back home from school to escape hardship only to find it waiting at home. It's for those who couldn't find their heroes in their siblings. It's for those who surprisingly found a parent in a teacher. It's for those who found family outside their home. It's for their who lost their friends and still cannot figure out what went wrong. It's for those who just couldn't continue to live in their hometown. It's for those who don't know what it feels like to have a best friend. It's for those who have had several crushes but never found their fated one. It's for those who want to be heroes but could only be mobs. It's for those who secretly cried their eyes out when they realized for the first time that they had already abandoned their childish innocence and needed to 'act' like adults. It's for those who want to help those in need but are too introverted to break out of their shells. It's for those who shed tears when they see someone else in agony, and then they shed even more tears when they find themselves unable to help out.
3-gatsu's openings are just a work of art. My favorite set of OP's ever. The symbolism of the first is what drew me to the show. They show the progression of Rei's mental state as time moves forward. At first he is literally drowning alone in his depression, the thorns of darkness dragging him down as he desperately searches for a way forward. His chance meeting with the Kawamoto sisters eventually becomes the light that leads him out. By the second he has started to see color arrive in his world, but reminders he still remains distant and reminders of his past start, and his old family, briefly take the color away. Eventually he realizes he can move on from his past and what happened with his old family with the help of his "new" one (God I love that moment) and the world returns to full color. By the third opening he is finally ready to move forward, and starts to clear his hurdles. The waters of depression that first drowned him he now runs over with ease. All his new found friends finally get a proper spotlight as he grows to appreciate the time he gets to spend with all of them. He starts to feel like he wants to help them like they all helped him but as of now can't yet fully grasp on to it. By the fourth opening his focus is now on those around him. He is no longer the only central character in his life and as his feelings of love start to blossom he starts to desire to no longer be alone, and takes the first real steps towards that. There are also loads of specific plot and character development points hinted at which I don't want to spoil, but which upon re-watch makes the openings feel even better. The most I am willing to say about that is that it amazes me how much they repeatedly are able to conveigh with single character shots.
If you were looking for more insight into this series the First Opening and Ending song are both done by BUMP OF CHICKEN and the music videos are official collabs with the anime/manga. Full length music videos for March Comes in Like a Lion! Would be solid reaction content!
It has sad moments because it deals with real life which is sad at times. That’s why when the good things happen in the show it feels personal and relatable. I cried .
Bump of Chicken, YUKI (The singer of 1st OP of Rurounin Kenshin anime series) and Unison Square Garden made a great work performing all OP's to 3-gatsu no Lion.
Just watch it please 😭. But I love this video because after watching the show it’s so cool to to see the way the movement of the story is reflected in the openings
A really worth-watching show, rather than slice of life, I would call it a drama show with absolutely great direction and execution. Strongly recommend!
BTW the title is a reference to the NHK Cup shogi tournament, the championship is in March and if I remember correctly it's also known as the Lion King tournament, though I could be wrong on that part
I have never understood why youtubers react to anime openings. Especially when they haven't even watch the anime to give a proper and interesting take on what each scene represent in the anime itself. It just seem like they don't know what to do for a video and/or ran out of ideas. This is not just a critique for this channel, but towards every channel that does it
In some cases its to show how they think about it bedore watching it and seeing how the fans correct them and to make hype for themselves also just to see what they can make out of the story drom the op
The best Slice of Life anime

I don't know if it will ever be animated, but the main character has the single biggest flex moment in any manga ever with just a few sheets of paper.
It's actually amazing how much you two got just from watching the openings...
Endings are much better feels-wise imo
