Doing It - The video was very inspired by Thelma & Louise, Natural Born Killers and Barbie. Rita and I went out to the Californian desert and shot in some incredible places with some incredible people. I was very inspired by Florida strip clubs, 70s fashion (I'm wearing flares!!!!!) and David Lachapelle. It was so fun working with Rita on this. We had a wild time.

This is such a GREAT pop song. It has all the elements that I Love about pop songs... great cadence... beautiful, catchy melodies. Repetitiveness. Charli has the perfect voice for pop hits... she continues to prove it. Rita Ora is just straight up sexy... I'll never get tired of looking at her... and her voice is amazing. A lot of strength, swagger, and soul in her vocals. I wanna run my fingers through Rita's hair... ol' fine ahh. But I'ma tell yall the ONE part that made this song a major hit... its that little "oooo Ooo OOOOo Oooooo!!" adlib that shows up every few bars or so. That part added a great texture to the song. Fun video too. Got that throwback feel to it.

It's a genre with SO much potential...so, when I first heard this(actually...I'm on a Charli binge...only having _just_ heard of her 5 hours ago) I fell in love immediately. This is what pop music SHOULD be. I feel giddy and high just listening to this.
And I couldn't agree more about the "ooh ooh" part. It's such a sly crafty melody. SO well written....pure pop ear candy. Similarly...I love the weird chromatic descending melody during the verses of her song "Superlove." It's just so....idiosyncratic, which seems sorely lacking in much of today's pop music.
And I adore her aesthetic style...she has a keen eye. The "Natural Born Killers" vibe was fucking perfect. Also got a "Doom Generation" feel from this. Her "Superlove" video is also aesthetically tantalizing...very much like the movie "Enter the Void."
Anyway...I'm glad you also seem to recognize how well-written her songs are. This is the sort of thing that makes me fall in love with the potential of pop music all over again. Another recent single that did that for me was Childish Gambino's "Sober." All of this just makes me feel inspired to get high and write some new music. Love it all...

Pop music gets a bad rep... but to me, its some of the most beautiful and well-organized music on the planet. The simplicity of it is what makes it great, but people tend to relate simplicity to something being wack. I couldn't disagree more. There's a lot of musicality in Pop music, and the reason its called POP is because its so memorable. These are the songs that get stuck in peoples' heads... the songs you put on repeat and sing along to.

Random question...you ever heard of the band The Dissociatives? Def look them up! They only have one album...from around 2003....best songs are Young Man Old Man, Horror With Eyeballs, Somewhere Down the Barrel, and Aaängry Megaphone Man....listen to all of those, trust me it's worth it. It's imo one of the best pop albums I've heard this past decade. Every song is perfect...but super weird and creative. I think you'll like it.
It was co-written by Daniel Johns...the guy from Silverchair, who...believe it or not, is a fucking creative genius on a whole other level. It's too bad most people only know him as the 15 year old kid who wrote that Tomorrow song way back in 1995. He's SO much more creative than that.
But yeah...you're right about pop music. It's probably THE most challenging type of music to write...because like you said, it's about cutting out ALL the needless fluff and making sure everything is simple, catchy, and to the point. IF you can add hyper-creativity on top of that....that's where the real magic is. THAT is why The Beatles were so incredible....they combined insane catchy-ness with insane creativity.
