I think the pause the manager made was meant to be a joke by Rockstar that jokes about how scary Trevor looks, in the photo and in real life. In contrast to the tense situation the crew was in.

I find it amazing how Rockstar Games' players like to overthink the most minute details to the point of absurdity, even if it makes no sense in any form, not in an easter egg hunt type of way, but just focusing on the wrong things type of way. it was like this with Big Foot in GTASA, Gary being a werewolf in Bully and Mount Chiliad in GTA5, among some others such occurrences in other games
The real question is why did Michael keep the same first name Like yeah changing the last name makes it harder to be found And Michael is a common name but, Trevor always remembered Michael If Michael didn’t wanna get found by Trevor why didn’t he just change his first name to something else
Because if he changed his first name it would cause a whole bunch of unnecessary confusion. Plus, he didn't foresee that Trevor would find him, so there was no real need from his point of view.
To be completely honest, the bank manager could've just paused when he noticed the ID was expired by four years. Then it's just a decision of if he should let the guy take the money & tell him he needs to renew his ID, or if he shouldn't tell him to renew his ID. He didn't tell him to renew his ID.
Hold up a moment. First of Rock star Take 2 ect are just awful. So do not give them credit over nothing. Second. This is the bank manager about to have highly trusted/secure guards move how much gold? The bank managers job in this situation is to step in have roast the guards ass over not having ID's that are valid. Since the bank manager do not say anything and we know Rockstar are awful pre and post GTA 5 online. The date and photo are just low effort reuse. There is NO way intentionally crated with care and effort. It was done just good enough. And it really dose not matter. Since no matter what it had probably no impact why the bank manager stopped for a moment. It is Trevor he is not the kind of person you mess with or expect to be moving gold. Idk the bank manager clearly did not expect anything like a robbery. And the hole thing is just for tension and Trevor really is the kind of person to do a secound take on.

Thank you for your well-articulated, detailed write ups. I appreciate that you're willing to say "the community is reading too far into this" because that's something most creators are simply unwilling to admit.
Also, the name says Diego Santiago, Trevor doesn't look the least bit Latino/Hispanic (delete as appropriate), so it's a combo of a few things An unlikely name And an outdated photo
@@palmbearoftexas2007ark viper has what 10000 hours on gtaV ?, and is much more experienced creator, apart from all that he’s a very thorough and intelligent guy, so naturally his argument would be compelling. Also I agree he’s sufficiently shot some holes in my response video (which never meant to be conclusive rather open up the possibility). However even he admitted in my comments that he had no evidence on whom or how merryweather was called whereas my argument gave a solid reason for it being the BM. I’m not sure about a rebuttal, I said what I wanted to say in my original response. I admit there are some points I like to raise but darkviper is adamant it wasn’t him and I was mainly encouraging people to be open minded and consider it, something he’s not remotely interested in 😂. Not everything I mentioned was discussed here, if u are curious I suggest watching my video (linked in his description) and form your own opinion on it.
Whoa, DarkViperAU delivered on his promise to make a response video (to my response video 😂) and came out with the hard facts, top stuff. I made my video with the sole intention of getting people to see some merit in the possibility that the Bank Manager was in the prologue, and so that they may not feel like complete fools. Based on some evidence I could find, and creativity I shared my thoughts on it. DarkViper to his credit didn't dismiss it entirely and wrote his own thoughts, which had led to this. I am grateful for this, it's what the internet and social media should be used for, exchanging ideas and opinions and offering constructive criticism with mutual respect. Am I 100% convinced that he wasn't in Prologue? no, is it extremely unlikely? admittedly, yes. Why? well given what's presented to the player (without going into code/ player models/ mods) he does look similar (imho), despite your claim at the end he has blue eyes, whereas a bit earlier in the video that's not clear. Regardless, the rest of your video sufficiently disputes my claims. The photo doesn't appear to be canon, it's location isn't convenient for my argument 😂, I didn't catch that on my edit lol. Also, in hindsight it seems strange that even if their ID was known to the police (directly after the robbery), why would they show the employees, they didn't see their faces lol, i.e. is this the guy ? kinda pointless. So let's agree that "if" the bank manager was in prologue, he didn't know Trevor's face, and move forward. The pause is likely a combination of them arriving late (to the pick-up) and the BM noticing obvious issues with Trevors ID, or indeed just for dramatic effect. My opinion is that the BM suspected something was off there, then the conversation that followed was him substantiating his suspicions of them. As I mentioned in my video he reached a point where he'd been robbed and then raised the alarm (to MerryWeather) when safe to do so. Yeah Casey hmm, tbh he couldn't really keep him at the bank without them realising what was going on, admittedly that's a bit of a stretch. I'm happy to move on, but I would still like to know, if he didn't realise he was being robbed, who then tipped off Merryweather? , and who's the BM talking to when he's saying "cargo arrived", and "cargo is gone". Anyway, as always, great work man 👍
Cargo arrived and cargo is gone is very common with banks in real life people like to know where the money is and when it left he was definitely talking to a higher up
And Mattos claim of "this is NOT how humans function" doesn't apply 100% if the BM IS IN THE PROLOGUE. Man experienced that traumatic prolgue bank heist so another wouldn't be as traumatic. Most prob was a story they intended to incorporate fully but got budget cut
@@BeverageOfSorts Agreed, with rockstars keen attention to detail, I wouldn't be surprised if they did try to make that connection. Hence why I was inclined to think that way. Matto rightfully says if the BM came face to face with a homicidal killer ie trevor, he wouldn't act calmly. I do get his point here, however I counter that that employee got robbed, wasn't witness to the rest, so wouldn't be as traumatised as DV makes it out to be. Of course this is my opinion on it. Also, even if he wasn't in Prologue, I still think he would've acted calmly, because it would've taken him time to realise what was going on, and in that circumstance had zero idea of trevors true capability. It would've been your regular bank robbery that he would be trained to cope with.
@@BeverageOfSorts Sometimes you can just remember a person by his or her eyes especially during such traumatic circumstances. But hey, that’s just a Theory…
The bank manager being harmed by Trevor all those years ago isn’t necessary to induce fear and panic in him upon seeing Trevor’s face; the fact that a notorious bank robber he bumped into at gunpoint years ago during a robbery, who initiated a massive shootout with law enforcement in an attempt to escape with the haul that saw him killing multiple people is standing in front of him 9-10 years later is enough to cause that reaction, especially if his reaction is literally the lynchpin of your entire argument. The following conversations and interactions between the bank manager and Trevor and Co doesn’t even remotely hint at any nervousness, fear or trepidation on his part, which is awfully strange for someone who reacted so strongly to a shitty photo.
My proposed scenario for why the guy pauses when seeing Trevor's ID is that he realized the oddity of his looks and was uneasy because of it, but in the ensuing ride up the elevator, was put at ease. This is because right before the elevator opens, you can see him profusely nodding, which could be taken as a sign that he realizes the situation is okay and there isn't anything to fear. For the rest of the time that the gang is inside, he seems perfectly calm, suggesting that after realizing the situation was okay, he proceeded to do his job as normal.
Another argument about the bank manager being calm is that the manager didn't know it was a robbery. During the stealth option, there's no reason for it to be flagged as a robbery (from the npc perspective). As stated in the mission, the trucks were there to pick up the gold in the first place. They just hijacked the trucks to carry out with their plan. It was only discovered to be a robbery when Merryweather caught them under the bridge. So up until that point, it was just a routine pick-up
I think the pause the manager made was meant to be a joke by Rockstar that jokes about how scary Trevor looks, in the photo and in real life. In contrast to the tense situation the crew was in.
I can't explain how much I enjoyed this video, the way you collect, present and explain your evidence is just flawless. I also love that you don't just stop when you've won, you make sure you've explored every angle, covered every weakness in your argument, countering any futile effort which the opposition might come up with.
Due to the nature of human beings, someone will find a way to counter-argue even if it's very far fetched. People tend to fight each other over differences like those simply from disliking the person in question. But I, too, love how Viper displays information.
Man, videos of you talking and explaining thing about gta 5 story are just so relaxing to me for some reason, I've watched this video three times already and somehow didn't get bored even slightly every time. I don't know if you're gonna do any video like that in the future, but if you do I'll be here for it.
5:30 also the original plan was for the car to drive over the train tracks like normal, and that Dave would kill Trevor by sniping him out of the car. So if that was the plan and later somehow learned that they crashed, he had to have gone to the crash site (The crew had probably already started walking at this point) and had to walk back. So it most certainly wasn’t Dave that took the picture.
I think if Rockstar meant for us to know it was the same character, they'd make it pretty obvious. It would've been pretty funny if the manager mentioned casually he was a hostage years ago without knowing he was in an elevator with the same people lol
Also, he'd either be taken hostage AGAIN or nearly have been. I really don't see what would be the point of implying this dude moved across the country and happened to stumble upon the same criminal which everyone thought was dead.
It's a unique ID. The suspenseful pause is the bank manager carefully studying the old photograph of the man before him, comparing it to his current appearance.
Funfact: The Town in which the GTA V intro starts is named "Lufendorff". Adolf Hitler had plans to rename the city of "Leningrad", the Russian city St. Petersburg, to "Ludendorff", inspired by the german general "Erich Ludendorff". This is a parody to the city of Bismarck but the coincidence of a cold snowy town being named "Ludendorff" is quiete funny.
Also he's got a mustache and a mullet which is a possible customization that trevor can have in-game but not everyone will have it Also he's 9 years (of constant drug abuse and unhealthy lifestyle) older compared to the picture
Diego is not a Mexican name, there are of course people in Mexico called Diego but it's not Mexican, it's Spanish and is therefore popular among the Spanish and Portuguese speaking worlds.
@@Alex-cw3rz Of course, but the game takes place in LA, where there are lots of people of Mexican descent (or Mexican immigrants for that matter) so most people called Diego, from pure chance, are likely Mexican
I would argue that the reason why the manager hesitates when seeing Trevor's ID is because it features Trevor with a moustache and longer hair, which Trevor does not have in the video, so he wanted to make sure that Trevor is the same man on the ID. However, you can change Trevor's hair, so he resembles the picture on the ID, but then there's no explanation, but the suspense built up. Or maybe R* instead for Trevor to be with "stock" hair.
OR..... you know just hear me out, maybe.... just maybe because Trevor looks like that one creepy ass scary uncle but cranked up to 11 no matter what hair you put on him.
He just hesitates to the photo being dated not the hair and mustache speculum Since you can basically make Trevor have the long hair and a mustache, and he will still hesitate
I always imagined that the reason the UD manager hesitates when looking at Trevor's ID because it looked a bit fake (because it was), especially since his name was something like Diego Santiago even though Trevor has an obvious Canadian accent. He also has long hair and mustache in the ID photo, but doesn't in person during the heist. So it probably just took the manager a little longer to be convinced by the ID, which is perfectly natural. Also it's just so the scene has a little more tension in it or something
I know this is a pretty old video, but I’d like to throw my hat in the ring. In the episode “Escape” from Thomas The Tank Engine, Douglas, one of the Scottish twins, helps another engine, Oliver, escape from being scrapped on the other railway. His crew helps Oliver’s crew forge documents saying that Oliver had been purchased by Douglas’ railway and was being taken away to be scrapped on the island of Sodor. They get flagged and stopped just as they’re about to leave the yards. The yard manager demands to see the paperwork because he senses something's off, and even says so, but after inspecting the forged documents, he declares that everything is in order and sends them on their way. As you mentioned, a dramatic pause while checking an ID or documents is a common trope to give drama and tension, and I think the fact that a children's TV Show from the 80's-90's proves that the pause in GTA's final heist is nothing more than that; a pause to give dramatic effect.
I remember seeing the original short that made this theory. I said at the time that they were reading too far into something that didn't have much meaning beyond providing some dramatic tension. I'm actually glad you're clearing this up.
Rockstar : lmao let's add a dramatic pause for extra suspense The community : okay so this dramatic pause is actually the bank manager recognizing trevor because he is actually the same one as the one in prolo-
One thing that isn’t even pointed out is how the ears are completely different. Ears are a well defining feature that is unique to a person just like finger prints- it is highly unlikely if the writers did want them to be the same, they would’ve made a close up of the person to show similarities, the ears would’ve been defined in each encounter to show they were meant to be the same person. This also could give cadence to them not reusing the model at all.
I mean if I was the manager of the Union depositary and some guy showed me his id in which he looks nothing like him and his I'd expired in 2009 and the game is in 2013 9:31 and ROCKSTAR did that pause to built suspense for the player that they have been caught.
Maybe the bank manager hesitated and looked weird while looking at the ID because it was expired? I'm pretty sure anyone would find that weird worthy of a small pause but since the bank manager is incompetent enough he simply ignores it.
Matt I'm glad you finally grew as a person and admitted that Michael is in witness protection. As someone who's been with your community for years now. That one claim always disturbed me, but now you've grown past that dark part of your history and we can all move on. Love you Matto!!!
Honestly i feel like if anything a more plausible canon reason for the pause would be he took a longer pause looking at trevors id is because of the differences in the older photo would make it so he had to look a bit closer to check it matched. Though lets be real it almost certainly is just for dramatic effect
From my very first playthrough to now, I just assumed that the manager paused because he was surprised of how different Trevor looked from his ID card 😂
At this point it's more likely that the bank manager recognized Trevor because he's actually a really big fan of Fame or Shame and happened to see Trevor on the show a while back. The reason why he doesn't bring it up is because Trevor's face is hard to identify and the manager doesn't want to embarrass himself if it turned out that Trevor wasn't on the show.
I love these kinds of videos, just you asserting your infinite wisdom regarding GTA5 lore. I love videos people go way in depth on lore in these games XD
Great watch as always 👊🏿. I do feel like with all these theory videos no one will ever know who's ultimately right/wrong without one of the writers confirming or denying it.
5:45 Dave might have hired someone else to make sure Michael plan went well. Even if dave couldn’t kill Trevor they would have a photo to show to witnesses
I think the reason why the bank manager stops and stares at Trevor is to relate the picture to Trevor since it's a photo from nine years ago and it looks a bit different, and the reason why is Trevor using that picture is maybe because Lister didn't find any other photo of Trevor to fake the ID with.
@@nathanmarshall745maybe that's why he uses a old photo for the ID, because he still looks similar but it would be less recognizable if the police got a hold of it they would think the robber just took some photo of an old dead bank robber and used it as an ID.

Oh silly Matto, you messed up again! It's actually the security guard that Trevor shoots in the head in prologue that later becomes the bank manager. Guess you'll have to make another video :/
Maybe Trevor has a very unique smell. In combination with his voice this might have have startet a "I know this guy but I don't know why" feeling in the manager. Some noises/smells do trigger feelings/distant memories at least for me. That's the only argument I can think of in favor of this assumption.
The amount of straw grasping with this theory is absurd. It is (or at least should be) obvious that the bank manager is hesitating because Trevor and his I.D look like a hillbilly meth-head and not a professional guard. Banks don't hire meth users believe it or not. Thats why he hesitated.
One thing that bothers me is Matto's conclusion that since Michael and Trevor were not recognized, the gang's pictures were not in the papers. It's been 9 years. People most likely just forgot about it. Would you recognize Bernie Madoff (yes, I'm aware that he's dead) if you saw him on the street? Jerry Sandusky? Dzhokhar Tsarnaev?
Honestly i think that pause was because he was looking at the expiry date, but because he wasn't feeling so confident decided to stay quiet. That's my take on it. Also people's eyes do generally have 2 possible colours depending on the lighting, but them both being inside in a white light i still think you're right, that isn't enough to change their eye colour.
I always assumed the name Diego Santiago on the ID would be enough to question the very none hispanic looking trevor haha not all of this reaching about remembering him from 10 years ago
The person who had took the photo of trevor could’ve maybe been the lady trevor grabs after the last shootout when brad and ‘michael’ dies but she was running from an opposite direction 🤔 🤔 🤔
16:20 eyes can change colour. Mine used to be grey-blue when I was younger, but now in middle-age they're grey-hazel. In video game graphics my eyes would have changed from blue to brown
The billionaire you run down with a bus in one of the assassination missions is in the bank during the Paleto score, despite the fact that the reason you have a bus in the assassination mission is that the guy is cheap, so he uses public transportation. There's no way he'd be taking a several hour bus ride to Paleto Bay every time he wants to use the bank. Rockstar re-uses models, so if the guy in the Big Score was the guy from Prologue, they'd have the same model. The only model that showed any age between Prologue and the events of the rest of the game is Brad's.
Another factor that might count against this, is the fact that the mission has a split choice. You can either go in stealth, which is one shown or you can tunnel your way directly into the vault. I doubt you would have such an important scene play out on a choice that may or may not be considered the canonical outcome in Rockstars eyes.

If Michael didn’t wanna get found by Trevor why didn’t he just change his first name to something else

11:58 THANK U.. somebody finally said it
Whoa, DarkViperAU delivered on his promise to make a response video (to my response video 😂) and came out with the hard facts, top stuff.
Imaging having such a foundational story defining plot point as something that half the playerbase would miss just by not choosing that heist option.
To be fair that does sound like Rockstar.
If it was true it wouldn't be much more than an interesting easter egg, don't know where you pulled that from.
Like how choosing Deal makes you miss the more logical and cathartic ending sequence in GTA IV?
tbf almost no one chooses the other option, i play this game since 2017 and i only chose the other option this year lol
@@enbybeanie666plenty of people choose the other option. Its better for money since you dont need a hacker
Never realised Norm Richards left his wife and children to follow a life of crime because he saw Michael Townley die on the news, that's kind of sad.
I love how easy it is to destroy this theory just by having a basic understanding of game development and storytelling
So up until that point, it was just a routine pick-up
I remember doing this approach for the first time, and the pause was exactly that, for building a suspension, I felt that and it was amazing.
I think the pause the manager made was meant to be a joke by Rockstar that jokes about how scary Trevor looks, in the photo and in real life. In contrast to the tense situation the crew was in.

The fact that anybody thinks the writers would be any more subtle than this is hilarious honestly.
Also, he'd either be taken hostage AGAIN or nearly have been. I really don't see what would be the point of implying this dude moved across the country and happened to stumble upon the same criminal which everyone thought was dead.
the hostage thing would've been cool as hell

It's a unique ID. The suspenseful pause is the bank manager carefully studying the old photograph of the man before him, comparing it to his current appearance.
Funfact: The Town in which the GTA V intro starts is named "Lufendorff". Adolf Hitler had plans to rename the city of "Leningrad", the Russian city St. Petersburg, to "Ludendorff", inspired by the german general "Erich Ludendorff".
This is a parody to the city of Bismarck but the coincidence of a cold snowy town being named "Ludendorff" is quiete funny.
6:03 love when my favorite character from Gravity Falls gets named
I always thought the manager was looking funny at Trevor because his ID says his name is Diego, meanwhile he doesn't look one bit Hispanic
Also he's got a mustache and a mullet which is a possible customization that trevor can have in-game but not everyone will have it
Also he's 9 years (of constant drug abuse and unhealthy lifestyle) older compared to the picture

Can't wait for the next video, about the farmer woman from prologue being the bank manager, as she's the one that actually saw Trevor's face....
I always just figured it was a joke about how the player customization can make Trevor look WAY different from the prolouge photo

Honestly i feel like if anything a more plausible canon reason for the pause would be he took a longer pause looking at trevors id is because of the differences in the older photo would make it so he had to look a bit closer to check it matched. Though lets be real it almost certainly is just for dramatic effect
Had us in the first second ngl
From my very first playthrough to now, I just assumed that the manager paused because he was surprised of how different Trevor looked from his ID card 😂
At this point it's more likely that the bank manager recognized Trevor because he's actually a really big fan of Fame or Shame and happened to see Trevor on the show a while back. The reason why he doesn't bring it up is because Trevor's face is hard to identify and the manager doesn't want to embarrass himself if it turned out that Trevor wasn't on the show.

THERE AREN'T BANK MANAGERS IN PROLOGUE
I think the reason why the bank manager stops and stares at Trevor is to relate the picture to Trevor since it's a photo from nine years ago and it looks a bit different, and the reason why is Trevor using that picture is maybe because Lister didn't find any other photo of Trevor to fake the ID with.
Both Trevor and Lester use LifeInvader though and to quote Trevor on one of the Series A setups "I like a selfie as much as the next guy but..."

Maybe Trevor has a very unique smell. In combination with his voice this might have have startet a "I know this guy but I don't know why" feeling in the manager. Only way I see this happening is if he remembers Trevor’s voice which could be pretty possible in such a traumatic event
The amount of straw grasping with this theory is absurd. It is (or at least should be) obvious that the bank manager is hesitating because Trevor and his I.D look like a hillbilly meth-head and not a professional guard. Banks don't hire meth users believe it or not. Thats why he hesitated.
Also an 2013 ID while picture from 2004 😂
One thing that bothers me is Matto's conclusion that since Michael and Trevor were not recognized, the gang's pictures were not in the papers.

I think the pause is just him realizing how stupid the name and picture look

I always assumed the Bank Manager paused because Trevor has an obvious "CUT HERE" tattoo around his neck.
Another factor that might count against this, is the fact that the mission has a split choice. You can either go in stealth, which is one shown or you can tunnel your way directly into the vault. I doubt you would have such an important scene play out on a choice that may or may not be considered the canonical outcome in Rockstars eyes.
its obvious that the pause is to make people think "oh shit, he knows" its just for suspense
