Rob's 89 Toyota Rockcrawler Build from 35's to 42's

- These are some random clips of my Toyota pickup from Tuttle Creek (near Randolph, KS) and down at Disney, OK. Started out with a Toyota straight axle swap and 35" procomp xterrains... Ended up 1 ton axles (d60/14b) and 42" super swamper IROKs. Had a blast in that rig. Yes the engine was making a loud clatter but kept chuggin' away. The guy I sold the motor to called to let me know the cam was wore so much and that's why we could never get the valves adjusted right. Front springs was a home brew toy rear pack, 63" chevy rears. Running a 2.28+4.7 doubler with twin stick.
That little truck is BEAST. Old Toyota vehicles are the shit!
nice to see a youtube wheelin video where the driver actually knows what they are doing. This guy clearly understands the capabilities of his rig and the basics of crawling.

+Daniel Fix Agreed... All too often I'm seeing yota drivers pegging the rev limiter, and it's like... This isn't rock crawling... This was really great to watch for a change

ive followed this rig on yt for a while..inspiration for my 93 :)
The tcase is a 2.28+4.7 doubler with 23 spline input shaft on the rear case. Runnin Trail-Gear adapter and gears in the case havent had any problems. Yota axles were 4.10's and the 1tons were 4.56.
awesome truck! loved the transformation to the final product. i am a toyota fan and have a 91 that i may or may not transform. still transforming my jeep
cool rig, and looks like it works good, and the body shows you been having fun !
Thanks, I really liked that truck. Hopefully I'll be as happy with the new one... The Disney clips are from BMR 2008 and 2009.. Cold and foggy every year out there for Big Meats Run. I don't anticipate having my new rig together by BMR 2011 but we'll see... I check the mailbox every day, I'm ready for the title so we can load that 4Runner on your trailer!!

Thanks Brent - yes the 35's worked awesome! they left enough room in the wheel wells for full articulation. I did like it on 42's and would have linked / truggied it on the 1 tons if I kept it. We are into the UTV's now though!

The chevies worked awesome with those big goofy shackles... gotta have the big shackles though! Running a mix of basically two factory toyota rear packs up front. They work awesome, going to use the same setup on the 83 I'm building right now.

Excellent color choice! Some of those clips look like they are from BMR 2010, they have that overcast and chilly look about them. You going this year? I'll be in the blue 'Toy, with nowhere near enough time to get the 'Runner ready.... once I get it from ya! Love your rig.
@rotccadet768 i made a custom leaf pack for the front using toyota rear leaf springs... Out back I used 63" chevy 2wd 1/2 ton springs... Bilstein shocks up fromt, never got around to putting shocks out back

Dont have this truck anymore, when I go to Randolph it's in a RZR XP.. Make the trip out west a couple times a year.
It was bobbed (shortened) and dovetailed (narrowed at rear)

Got rid of truck before I got around to building mounts out back..
originally it was IFS - so we put a yota axle in there.. then I upgraded to a dana 60
Hows it goin folks ..just wanted to know if anyone has switched to amsoil severe gear and now has an intermittent vibration usually around 35-45 ..its not the u joints ...thanx
hey nice truck, im new to trucks and i have a long bed right now on an 84 yota, i was thinking about getting longer shackles so i can remove part of the frame to make it a lot shorter. is it possible? how much?
How did you like the switch to 1 tons from yota axles? I love how my yota just pops up stuff because of how light it is

love the way Toyota's perform but I hate the sound of that 22RE.
That is because the timing chain is eating its way thru the guides (common issue) and will soon take out the back side of the water pump letting all the coolant into the crankcase in under 30 seconds with no external leak until it hydro-locks and bends a rod or pokes a hole in the side of the block

I got a standard MK2 so i know how bloody good that is!. What engine's in it, It's defo not standard :-)

You've put money into literally everything except your own safety. Put a fucking cage in that thing before you become another statistic.

Engines have NOTHING to do with vibrations at specific speeds. Maybe your transmission.
