- After making the drive out to Chloride City we come to a great viewpoint overlooking Death Valley. Wow, is all I can say about the view. We check out a nearby grave and the ruins of several structures before entering a cabin that has a nice portal to a mine right out it's back door. How handy is that for the miners? We find a really interesting working that winds it's way a long way down into the mountain. There is a collapsed vertical shaft and a couple winze shafts with mounts for a windlass on one of them. We hope you enjoy the video!
gotta love them old Cabins..... knee pads will save ya every time ... that drift doesn't look low to us ....hahhahahah that wire is for the hoist bell , we have one in our Drift mine too .... that was a cool little mine .....would be fun to run the skip car around in there .....keep'em coming and be safe out there you two ......PLUS we smashed that like button ....SMASHED it HARD !!!!!
I always have knee pads in my pack, but a lot of times I'm too lazy to put them on. You and I are about the same height, I'm guessing, although I probably have a little more meat on me, anyway it would have been low for you, too. I thought about running a car on those tracks, too. Like a little roller coaster. You better take it easy on that like button of yours. The way you're always smashing it you might break it to bits. Thanks, Jeff!

There's something to be said for a mine like this. I don't think there's a such thing as an easy mine but this mine looks like a real "Ball Buster". Beautiful view of Death Valley. Absolutely breath taking! Thanks for bringing us along Tom and Julie!

That is one of the weirdest mines i've seen. The geology was swattered and fragmented, with what looked like brown talc and quartz veins. Whoever drove all those adits and stopes was fragmented as well - low small passages, lots of blockages - they must have been small men with sore backs. really odd, thanks for venturing into that sketchy mine for your viewing pleasure :)
It is a strange mine for sure. I'm a believer that many of the old time miners were fairly small and very agile men. Tough as nails, too. Glad that you enjoyed it and thanks for commenting!
From what I can find in the immediate area of the mine it was gold, silver, lead, copper, and mercury.

the drive across amargosa valley just to get there is amazing as well, 1:13 yep, that's chloride city highway 1:46 furnace creek and stovepipe wells is out there 3:53 the spelling is the same as john mackay of the comstock fame, cool, i find it amazing that the prospectors of old were crawling all over the funeral range, the place is deadly for heat, cold and sheer desolation from any water, but the bullfrog goldrush in nearby beatty started it all, chloride cliffs/city provided high grade gold close to the surface for years 12:12 those tracks go straight through what was very good gold ore, good video y'all, i enjoy watching it, regards
I think about the old time prospectors scouring these mountains, too. It's really pretty amazing what they were able to do. Hiking around for days at a time with a couple canteens of water, a pocket full of jerky and a can or two of beans. Carrying a pick and a shovel, bedroll and wearing stiff leather boots. How they could possibly climb up to some of the places they did is beyond me. Glad that you have enjoyed this area and thanks for commenting!
@@TomandJulieMineExploring i have discovered the old caned fish, sardines and bean tins with perfect printing on them years ago exploring bare mountain, of which is directly across amargosa valley from chloride cliffs and keane's wonder mine, and this clearly told me the old timers were tough as it humanly gets to afford to pack in everything to survive for who know's how long? in the funerals and upper amargosa valley with enough water, food, mule, burro or horse supplies to explore for gold, silver and even copper in the chloride cliffs, and surrounding mining districts in both california and nevada back then. regards

Mighty small hole, my back hurts just looking at it. They might have scrimped on dynamite but they sure didn't spare expense on track ties, biggest ties I have seen in an old mine. Thanks T and J !!!

That must have been the Seven Dwarfs Mine with two foot high Ore Cars. It seemed really random and disorganized too. My back hurt just watching you navigate through it.

A nice little Mine.
It looks a bit Caotic how the Tunnels were build .
The winze was build at the end of the mining because the Hoist was build up on the tracks.
So the the tracks were useless .
But who knows what the miners did and why a long time ago.

Wow, I don't think I have seen the Jeep before, probably just missed it in other videos. I was expecting something big and built for the trails you go on, but it is a stock YJ with nearly bald tires! Awesome! Imagine what a built YJ could do. (just get you deeper in trouble I guess) LOL
Yes, mostly stock YJ. The tires aren't bald though. They only have about 8000 miles on them. They are pretty chewed up from the sharp rocks we drive on, though. It goes just about every place we want it to, especially after removing the track bars and sway bar. What a huge difference in traction that made. Not a huge fan of big, built up and expensive vehicles. We leave this out in the desert while hiking and exploring mines. I would worry if we did that with a $75,000 Jeep or Toyota. Plus, the scratches and dents we get don't hurt as much on this old Jeep. Thanks for the comment!

Boy those are some tight tunnels. The lure of gold or whatever there is digging out of there must be pretty strong for those guys to mole through those tight tight tunnels. Enjoy the video keep them coming keep safe out there you guys.

Thank You for being brave enough to go in. That mine would never win a beauty contest let alone a safety award. Probably a frustrating work place for anyone over 48" tall. The ore car was probably all dented in from daily derails and track alignment, did I say alignment? Didn't mean to, anyways you deliver good entertainment and awesome views. Thanks again.

With that old car frame, you can say that this is what happens when you drive on some of those roads and get stuck in a bad place.

It seems like it has been through a few different working phases. I didn't really show the collapsed vertical shaft where all the junk is that I came down along side. There was probably a good ladder system coming down the shaft. That would at least make the access easier and to pull a skip out for the ore and waste. Thanks for the comment!

From the looks of the pot and dwelling could have been a bad batch of popcorn.💣💥 Just roll out of bed and get to work. Had to look up definition of stull. Don't recall hearing it used before. That has to be one of the worst from all of the cracks, debris and dust. Makes me wonder how many got injured in the mining process. Not to mention lungs full of dust. 👌🚙
Haha, bad popcorn. That's what happened to the dwelling. I'm pretty sure mining was a very dangerous job back in the day and lung problems were probably common. Thanks for the comment!

@@TomandJulieMineExploring I got some taller tires put on and have already been to some gnarly places. Was in a car accident last week and my knee is messed up. Found a spot that makes for an awesome hike and possible mine explore with the van. I tried hiking some of the location but got tired and had to come back down.
You all would make short work of it though.
Cool old truck there and a barrel they turned into a tram ore bucket possibly with that old truck with the boom.

Tom, I'm glad Julie stayed back. That rock was so fissured and collapses were everywhere. Do you suppose the height was changed by decades of falling rock and possibly abandoned fill? Maybe there's an upper portal and they dumped down to that level? I noticed that large platform/walkway up that stope. It's almost like they took timber support out for elsewhere?
The drive up was beautiful and it's easy to see how that in itself draws you and Julie time and again. Your dugout and shack find were awesome. And there was a Portal!
The vehicles from the historical era there must have needed a lot of maintenance to get where your modern Jeep can go? Who knows what model that one was? I suppose it became a platform for using its motor and a modified drivetrain. Power for a hoist maybe, or a smaller stamp mill? There's always something to speculate at that kind of site.

Thanks for the thoughtful comment, Rick. The drive out to these type areas is usyally a fun one with great views. It sure must have takena toll on the old vehicles. It is fun to think of the drivetrain from that vehicle being repurposed to run a generator, pump or mill of some sort. The rest of the parts disappeared from that vehicle, too

Leprechauns are a possibility. Whoever they were they had to have sore backs at the end of the day.

lots of loose rocks on that skip track, pretty sketchy looking . couple questions (1) do you always go back to home base after exploring , or do you sometimes camp at or near the mine. (2) have you ever ran into other explorers deep inside a mine. (3) have you ever found a mine you would consider a good " bug out spot "
We have a base in the form of an RV. Sometimes in a private park, a public campground or sometimes boondocking. We have run into other explorers deep in a mine, but not very often. Mine for a bug out spot? I guess it depends on what I'm getting away from. Mines are generally not that fun to hang out in, IMHO. The temperature can be hot or cold, lots of rat droppings, dirty, dark and dusty. We're usually glad to get out and into the fresh air. Hope that answers your questions, Tony.
I first visited ol' James' grave over 20 years ago - and several more times, since. I've often wondered why the park service has left that mine open, not that I'm complaining, mind you.
I can't remember if there was a cable net closure on this one or not. It's been a couple months since we made this video. People always cut them anyway so I don’t know why the NPS wastes the money on them. I guess it's a way to cover their butts in case someone gets hurt in there. Looks like the miner stripped the only the bare minimum of the mineral vein, this must have made it back breaking work, now maybe we know what that man in the grave died of.

At 9:31 it almost looks like there's an old denim bag towards the left of the rocks? Probably just twisted metal. The cabin was pretty cool and the mine had a lot going on! Thanks for the video!

Glad you didn't hike much more down there it was looking slippery and hard to crawl back up! Kind of sketchy. U made the right choice in my opinion and went back up to where your partner was. You're correct it was getting to be a slippery slope near the bottom of the mine. I was probably inside the mine about an hour before I came back up to where Julie was waiting. We gave radios to communicate with each other, but the range inside a mine is very limited. The cabin right at the portal was cool. Thanks for the comment, Duane!
And to think they drove mine trucks on that road.. Another one that looks more like a cave than a mine.
I have no idea how the old trucks, or the people who drove them, survived the trip to the old mines, No electronic traction control or anti lock brakes and tires that were about three inches wide. Probably ovetloaded most of the time with very basic suspensions on steep mountain roads. Yes, another strange little mine. Thanks for the comment, Max!

That mine's a trip - too big to call a glory hole, to small to call industrial scale....but doable. Set your solar panels up, a satellite internet antenna &some other radio gear, water tank & a swamp cooler, set up a camp stove & some bedding and move right in. ;*[}
The majority of the road out there is in great shspe. It gets tougher as you climb up the mountain, of course. This video was made a couple months ago as we don't spend time here in the summer. I'm not sure if it's been a hot year in DV or not. The mine is kind of in between sizes, bigger than a gopher hole, but certainly not an industrial powerhouse. Thanks for commenting, Steven!

I am always interested in what the ore contained.My dad was a sampler in Lacnor uranium mine at Elliot lake Ontario Canada.
This was primarily a silver mine. Like many mines thete were probably other metals that were present like gold and or lead. Thanks for the comment, David!

Have you guys ever explored southeast Arizona for mines? There are many old mines around tombstone and bisbee. Think lots of gold, silver, and copper mines.
We have not done much in southeast Arizona. We have done a few things around western AZ.
I was out here a few days ago and someone put a boulder in the path at 1:28.

Hi George. We both carry monitors to check for bad air. Julie usually carries an O2 meter and I usually carry a four gas monitor. The problem we have with them is that they tend to get pulled off while crawling through a small space. If I wear mine on the outside of my pack I tether it with a light rope to my pack so it doesn’t get knocked off and fall down a shaft. The reason you might not always see them is that many times they are in the pack pocket. Thanks for your comment on this important matter.

You may be thinking of Snow White. There are no gnomes, dwarfs or mines in Sleeping Beauty. In two rather disturbing variants of the story the Prince rapes the Princess in her sleep. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, the dwarfs own and work in a diamond mine.

@@rogersmith7396: Disney had nothing to do with either story other than to turn them into animated films (cartoons). I suspect the Disney versions are based on The Brothers Grimm (Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm) versions of the stories, first published in 1812. But both stories are much older than that. The original Sleeping Beauty dates back to the early 1600s.

Is this the road coming from 95 or 374?
The road in the first part of the video is coming from 374, and when it starts to climb in the video, it is after the intersection of the road coming from 95. I think it's easier to come off of 95. We've done both a couple of times.

I hope so, too. If we do break down we are always prepared to walk out if necessary. It might take a whole day and night but we'll get out somehow.
