Hi Ryan. Thank you soooo much for figuring this out for me. This song has been in my rotation for many years. I appreciate Shawn's voice immensely. I was devastated, as were many, when we lost him. Now we are literally listening to an angel sing. The video is one of my favorites as well. The video is so PNW.
You have my gratitude.
Incredible song worthy of your praise and skill
If I've ever heard this song I don't recall it.
Upon hearing there were notes, I decided to just listen instead of attempting to play along the first time through. I'm glad I did; it allowed me to just listen and just pay attention to the melody. The chord progression and structure is really satisfying. Suffering really made me feel good!
I'm embarrassed to report how many times it took me retuning and putting the capo in different places to realize this song is in C#... something about the structure was just a little foreign to my brain, which is one of the reasons I like it :)
What a treat, thank you Ryan. I had nearly forgotten about this song and I appreciate you reminding me how great it is, and how much I miss Shawn Smith. Lucky enough to see Brad a couple of times and his voice and stage presence was awe inspiring. Cheers.
were you at the show they played in SF in like 2013 or something? they played crown of thorns... I was!
Ryan Lendt No, unfortunately I wasn’t at that show. A friend of mine and I did a mini road trip from San Diego in 1997 and saw them at the House of Blues in LA, and then at Slim’s in SF. From what I remember the set lists were pretty similar. Shawn played Purple Rain solo on the piano, and they ended the show with a rousing version on Benny and the Jets. They were great shows!
Dude !!! Thank you so much. I love the arrangement. Perfect yet again. "Put on your old fur coat, it's 1973" .
Such a great line The Afghan Whigs had to use it on ‘Summer’s Kiss’
I didn't know Shawn Smith died.
What a shame. Brad and Satchel are fantastic. Love Shame, Screen, Buttercup, Circle and the line etc.
7/17/20. Congratulations on 44k!!! 44 is a slugger’s number. Hank Aaron and I believe Reggie Jackson wore 44. It’s a good number for running backs as well. My little league number was 7 because I liked Mickey Mantle. I pitched, played first base, and shortstop. Take care, Ryan.
Incredible song. What a voice Shawn had. Look into his work with Greg Dulli and The Twilight Singers. Thanks so much for teaching and highlighting these overlooked gems.
Hey Ryan,
I just loooove your vids!!!
love your attitude and humor as well , makes it even better.
I have the same Taylor and was interested what strings you use ?
Thanks a lot and keep the great work up!!!
Thanks so much Danny! I use elixirs on elizabeth the taylor - they are a little pricey but worth every penny - treat yo'self!
Ryan we need more stuff from 1039/Slappy by Green Day, but damn i like the little kermit
This song reminds me of “Wonderful” by STP, you should try that one Ry, keep of the great work 👍
Great song! Unrelated but what do you think of gigaton? Had a chance to listen on a long car ride earlier today
Excellent! More Shawn Smith! I never understood why his career didn’t take off. How about Runnin’ for Cover next? ua-cam.com/video/jwbi5rhMOBA/v-deo.html
Wow. One of the greatest, but most overlooked tunes from the 90’s. Thank you for breaking down so many awesome songs. Further proof that a musical scene/epicenter like Seattle from ’88 to ‘95 or so will never happen again. Thanks, technology!
I believe you are right Tony... :)
