  • Hey people,
This is more a follow up video, and a bit of a ramble one.
There's some little things that might help you out when installing and configuring Window NT 4. I have put together a video on things I found and did that might help someone out.
She's a bit of a long one, so not really a "Feature film" as such.
    But enjoy anyway!
    Cheers

NT is still an awesome operating system (at least the Server variant) for running file, print and exchange servers for a home network of Windows 9x and Win3.1 systems. I run three Compaq Evo’s with NT 4.0 Server. A Primary and Backup Domain Controller And a Exchange/File Server.
I never used the WorkStation variant much, mostly just adding a system to a NT Domain back in the day, my main rig was a Windows 98SE System then which was just connected to our servers via ‘Microsoft Logon For Microsoft Networks’ and from there you could open a console to make System Policy Changes or what have you to the main servers

Yeah it's actually pretty good! I had a quick play with NT 4 Server, and tried getting some VM's connected to it. Seemed to work pretty easily. Some of the ways of connecting to it threw me a little, as I'm used to working with Server 2003 and newer. Still a good option these days for a server/client side as it doesn't require activation

You, sir, are certainly a WinNT guy! I have an ABIT BP6 with dual Celerons that I think I should get up and running on NT to see how having 2 cores changes things. Just for fun of course 😁

Haha. Fake it until you make it 😉 yeah you should break it out and see what you get from an extra CPU. I’d love to give one a crack one day

1:37 Windows NT 3.51 and 4.0's FAT16 limitation was 4GB not 2GB. DOS based OSes had the 2GB FAT16 limitation. Windows NT's FAT16 was written with unsigned integers and the DOS based OSes was written with signed integers. Unsigned integers have a range of 0 to 4294967295 (4GB), whereas signed integers have a range of -2147483648 to 2147483647 (2GB). When you select NTFS, Windows NT 3.51 and 4.0 will first format the hard drive with FAT and then on reboot it will convert it over to NTFS.

Apologies for the slow reply! Joys of life getting in the way. I Seemed to have had bit of a moment there as I kept thinking it was a DOS FAT16 partition it created and not something larger! The work arounds people would do to expand that years later made me laugh haha. Joys of the old stuff

Awesome pack! I have a couple of older ThinkPads coming in over the next few months, at least one will have NT 4.0.

Thank you! Glad you found it useful. NT4 software is not too common sadly. What sort of thinkpads are you waiting on?

IIRC, 2GB FAT16 and 4GB NTFS really are the limits for NT 4. The four years between 1996 (NT 4) and 2000 (NT 5 i.e. Windows 2000) were when FAT32 came out, and I think NTFS was able to go up to 32GB then? Win2K was a very different beast under the hood in many ways beyond file systems as well.

Ah yes, I did notice that the boot drive is rather small. From what I remember and could be wrong, the service packs helped with larger disks?
