the most dramatic video hahaha I loved it! thank you for this video Victor. You just got a new subscriber. :) You just gave me a boost of motivation... Muchas gracias
One part that I would buy instead of the V mount battery is the Ulanzi charger for Sony FP batteries which doubles as a PD power bank because of its USB-C out port. Also has a Dtap port. That way I can economically use Sony FP style batteries which last forever on this camera. Just make sure to use a USB-C cable that supports power delivery such as Kondor Blue (expensive but worth it, supporting up to 10v, 5 amps).
the "look" or lens compression will still be 24mm but your field of view will be cropped 1.5x because of the APSC sensor which will result in a field of view of 35mm and the look of the 24mm
@@VictorLaforteza Ah I see, I thought so. This is a myth and I'm not quite sure who started proliferating it. Compression IS your FOV. You can test the theory by setting up two cameras with different sensor formats and equivalent focal lengths and noticing how the compression looks identical. The only difference is depth of field.
@@definingslawek4731 We're pulling hairs from terminology here. Let's go with your explanation but there's one info you're overseeing which is equivalent focal lengths in different sensors but in this video, we're using a 24mm full frame lens. You put that on a full frame you get 24mm and if you put the same exact lens on an apsc and you still get 24mm DoF and but cropped FOV. Your statement is true if we put FF sensor w a FF lens vs an APSC sensor w an APSC lens. You can test this out too.
@@VictorLaforteza BTW Victor I LOVE your work and you're one of my favourite filmmaking/ commercial DirDoP's that do youtube. I don't quite understand your last comment. I also don't think we're pulling / splitting hairs terminoligy wise. The statement: "because of the APSC sensor which will result in a field of view of 35mm and the look of the 24mm" is totally false. A 24mm lens on APSC will give a FOV of a 36mm ff equiv lens and as a result will give you the 'compression' of a 36mm ff equiv lens. This is a somewhat common missconception and I first learned about it when taking a look at medium format. Many photographers believe that there exists a so called 'medium format look.' claiming that on medium format they can get the compression of a longer lens with a wider FOV which is false. There's no compression difference between an iphone and a ff camera, check it out :)
@@definingslawek4731 Thank you and I totally get where you're coming from and it is correct. What I mean is simply put the same lens 24mm FF lens on a FF camera and an APSC camera and the look doesn't change visually but the crop and if I use the correct terminology and phrasing, we'll both mean the same thing. I phrased it incorrectly based on the true technical terms and thank you for clarifying.
Is it safe to power the camera and monitor using the same V-mount battery? I’ve been told not to power my camera and monitor using the same V-mount battery because it’ll fry the HDMI port and possibly the camera. Is this true? (I shoot on the fx30) I'm using a small rig vb50 battery. I have an 8v dc connection to my monitor and a 9v USB-C power delivery to my camera.
USBC should be okay! The vmount has voltage regulation and I think the camera has it too! It’s only when you use the dummy battery (at least the cheap unregulated ones) could fry the camera. Getting good cables can help as well!

I think the Shonobi is the last piece I need for my rig. Been back and forth with the Portkeys lh5 ii but the interface and tools of the Shinobi is just more refined. Thanks for the rig inspo!
you’d reckon Portkeys LH5P II better than Shinobi? I haven’t decide which one to go with my FX30. Any advices? I don’t need any external raw recording though. cheers.
The shinobi has some good things, but other things are a deal breaker for me. First of all the color accuracy is really garbage. Ven after buying a 100 dollar cable to calibrate it, it isnt perfect. Then it takes a while to start up and shut down and the menus are better then almost all other brands but still dont very fast and intuitive. Small HD is simply the best with their menus, but sadly too expensive. The focus peaking is very bad with the Shinobi, there is no pinch to zoom and it has a problem with displaying luts too contrasty. So all in all, while i really want to like it, the Shinobi has too much flaws for me, to be a professional tool. Now i ordered the Portkeys and i am really excited to test it out.
I ended up going with the FX3 but I do a lot of vertical IG content so I went with a more lightweight rig that I can easily go vertical or horizontal with depending on the shot. That was the main reason I went with the FX3 instead of FX6. The FX6 seems like it would need a lot more accessories to make vertical shooting feasible. And the 3.5mm microphone jack on the body was huge for me as well since I don't always want to use the huge XLR handle. Still waiting on some pieces to arrive so I can finally put it all together.
Same here! Way too many vertical content deliverables recently. I stuck with the small flexible form factor with the fx3 & fx30. Also easier to travel with. Good luck on your rig! Update me on it! I’d love to see your vertical rig. Mine is still on the works
Excuse me if I’m asking a stupid question but, how do you get stable footage with this rig ? Are you using IBIS + Lens stabilisation ? I have a XT3 that doesn’t have Ibis, and I’m using vintage lenses. Do a need a gimbal ? Thanks 😊
Definitely not a stupid question! So making it heavy with the rig gives you a natural looking handheld footage. Ibis and lens stabilization if I have it! It won’t be like gimbal smooth but it’s more off an organic film look. I usually strip it down for those super smooth shots with a gimbal :) hope that helps! @@user-nu8bf3bf9m Just with the sony battery and the USB-C charging from the vmount. It trickle charges it while operation so it still lasts about 2 hours continuous shooting but if you turn off the camera in between takes, the vmount charges it to full battery fairly quickly.
I just need this V-mount battery... Enough for me charging via the power bank :((( But this smallrig v-mount? Such a beauty piece of gear. I didnť know it existed until now. Really thinking of buying one. And really good video as always. So calm and chill. Lovin it
Very nice. I like the weight distribution. I 75% of the time need a shotgun mic on my rig though and phantom power does drain battery. So I'm looking for nice and compact like this v-mount/rail solution. How long in average do you get with a monitor + camera until it switches to internal battery?
I usually swap out the video transmitter with a microphone. If I need both, I will swap out the handle with the XLR handle mount the monitor on top of it or with a magic arm with the handle extension and XLR cage.
Does your small rig top handle with the trigger sometimes just stop working? I have had it do that several times over the last couple of months. Usually shutting down the camera and re plugging in makes it work agin, but not always... It has a mind of it's own...
Actually if the power delivery is 9V 3A then it stalls the battery drainage while in use and charge it when you shut it for a moment or so. Tried that with the USB-C port on my beefy ZGCine 200WH and after 9 hours total and 3:15 hours of total video+photo the camera is still 100% and of course the 200WH is an overkill but bought it to mount 65W COB on the camera on my last documentary and can take as well the 110W Colbor CL100X easily via D-Tap to USB-C cable that is made by Colbor themselves. Might get a 300WH battery next for night wildlife filmmaking.
You single handily sold me on the FX30 a week ago. Already here and now planning my rig. Have you got any recommendations for VND filters that won't burst the bank?
haven't tried pro res raw on the fx30 as I have no use for it but it is way more flexible than the internal codecs. Is it worth it? depends on the type of work!
@@VictorLaforteza 😍 what kind of works would prores raw would be recommended on?. I don't know, the fx30 screen isn't that good and I could buy a ninja V for less than 500 bucks. Back in the days it was way more expensive, especially the plus version
@@giuliomalloni3975 something like you would give the footage to a colorist! big budget ones. I mean it also helps with any type of work but I find the internal codec is pretty good already to grade and play around with that's why I stuck with a monitor vs a recorder :)
the smallrig monitor mount with small hinge on the side is very useful to tighten it, I had the one with the allen key on the side like you said is very hard to tighten especially when you forgot your allen key! 😂definitely going to buy that smallrig monitor mount with the small hinge on the side!
RIGHT!! I’ve had a shoot there it was just dangling untightened.. lol it’s the small things that matter!! Little conveniences add up into the whole experience.
One thing to note is you can fry your camera. It happened to me. So you have to connect the camera power first and then the hdmi. If you do it the other way you can break it.
Nice rig buddy! By now you've used the fx3, fx30, a7IV and I think the a7sIII. Which one of these do you use the most and which one of these would you say is your favorite?
Thanks dude! Last year, the a7iv was my most used camera for UA-cam and hobby stuff! Image quality of the video is amazing and photo is an added benefit for me. My favourite is the fx3 still because it’s an a7siii with a really nice small cinema style body. Video centric more like. It might be taken over by the fx30 because it’s such a good camera for it’s price and apsc doesn’t really hold me back. The a7siii was good during my rentals with it but it still felt like a hybrid (which it is) but it should’ve been just the fx3 all along.
@@VictorLaforteza Well put, I see your point! I went for the a7sIII, just because I though viewfinder might come in handy and that I might enjoy taking some photos on the go, although 90% would be for video use... (coming from blackmagic cameras that are purely video-centric). I am bummed though that the things I'm missing on the a7s III, could be fixed with a software update, (preview LUTs, better menu system, etc), but I don't think Sony's going to do that... which is kind of silly. What features do you miss from the fx3 whilst you were using the a7sIII or IV? And do you find yourself using the viewfinder that much? I haven't had a chance to use the fx3, so I don't know what I might be missing physically (potentially better button layout for video, better grip, tally lights...) Thanks once again for your feedback!
I went for the A7siii for similar reasons as you. Also got it new for $1000 cheaper than an FX3 so it was a no brainer. Been very happy with it the last 2 weeks
@@bartsimpson2131 I think I miss the convenience of the layout a lot when I use the hyrbid bodies. I set it up almost similar to the FX3 body but there's just something to it that works very well with that cine body. Tally lights are good as well, it's a good feature but I can always get by with the red box on the screen while recording. Really not much to miss haha just preference and added convenience which I believe doesn't worth the big price jump. I would've bought the a7siii if it was in stock when I was shopping but I only found one fx3 during that time so I jumped on it lol
@@VictorLaforteza There's just something about that gunmetal, venice-looking finish that makes it look nice. When I was buying my a7sIII, the difference was more than a 1000$, just like Steve, so it seemed like a no brainer too. I was going to go for the fx3, but as I said, I;ve never used hybrid cameras before, so I thought the more friendly photo capabilities might come in handy if I ever wanted to get in to photography, since I don't have a dedicated photography camera. But yeah, if the differences were bigger, as in if the FX3 had false color, shutter angle (again with the software), I definitely would've gone for it. It's a real pity they don't provide these types of firmware updates. I remember getting firmware updates on the bmpcc 4k, it's like getting a new camera (better frame rate options, rgb histogram, gen 5, etc). I know Sony's capable of doing this....I''m being a bit spoilt here. They're all amazing and capable cameras, very thankful that we have these sorts of problems in this day and age :) Thanks for the info Victor and take care you guys!

@@VictorLaforteza no worries, great video. i hope it last you a long time as well. i shoot drumline content on my channel and i really want to level it up with bmp6kpro. every video on my channel has been shot with my iphone and its definitely served me well, but its time to take it to the next level!!!
Depends on the production. I usually add a shotgun microphone for doc work. If it's interview, I have a dedicated audio recorder with lavs and an overhead shotgun microphone.
@@IzachBao yes, you can just switch the handle with the XLR handle with the smallrig extensions. That's the beauty of it, you can add or subtract whatever you want to it.
What i don´t get of these smallrig batteries is waht ydo you do qhen your batery dies,... you have to loose al connections and put another one, thats simply not good in certain eviroments like a ceremony, you need to be able to change batteries fast! and the also super expensive and fragile. Super nice video BTW
well the smallrig battery lasts for about 10-12 hours of continuous shooting. I think that's enough to cover an entire wedding day haha or atleast change it when you have a small break in between the ceremony and reception! It's not too troublesome to unplug and change a new v mount into the rig :)
I'd love to see manufacturers design flip out screens so they could disconnect and be mounted in other positions. It's such a weak point in the design. Nice rig though. You gave me some ideas.
Victor I’m really excited to see new video from you. I like how u make video and this style and vibe. Can you make video about 7artisans Vision Cineline (25mm, 35mm, 50mm T1.05)? I know you’ve got a video about 12mm but I think video about the Vision line will be really useful for beginner filmmakers. These lenses are really cheap especially on Taobao (淘宝), price for all the line is $970. Thank you so much really appreciate that.
The devil in in the details they say... perhaps not, but how annoying it is when details are skipped away ! This is why I take good notice of those ultra-slim HDMI cables. When too thick, they are stiff to the point the just snap in the middle of a delicate pan movement. When too flimsy they just hang and dangle, hitting handles or tripod legs or opened screens... cables also are probably a devil's thing !!! ✋😈👌 It may not be the sexiest part of your list, but it sure is that Achille's heel (or hell !) of a serious rig. Many times I told my son, you can have the most expensive car in the World... what if your accelarator cable breaks ? This is why top-quality cables matter, a lot ! So, thank you for mentionning good ones, they are now on my (Christmas ?) list. Eventually in my bag, some day soon.

@@VictorLaforteza oh sorry I misunderstood. How do you power FX30 while using this rig? Not from Vmount battery?
@@user-nu8bf3bf9m Just with the sony battery and the USB-C charging from the vmount. It trickle charges it while operation so it still lasts about 2 hours continuous shooting but if you turn off the camera in between takes, the vmount charges it to full battery fairly quickly.
@@VictorLaforteza I see now! Thank you!!
What kind of matte box adapter did he use for that 24mm lenses?
67mm adapter included in the mattebox kit!
I just need this V-mount battery... Enough for me charging via the power bank :(((
But this smallrig v-mount? Such a beauty piece of gear. I didnť know it existed until now. Really thinking of buying one.
And really good video as always. So calm and chill. Lovin it
Thanks for always tuning in Michal! The v-mount is really good! It's small enough to be your own battery for everything while travelling too!
Are you able to make this with the fx3/fx30 xlr top handle?
yup! you can attach the smallrig XLR handle attachments
Anyone know what the font is in the thumbnail
I’d buy the whole set it’s nice!❤
it's an amazing setup!!
The part that I was interested in would be SmallRig VB 99 as it’s small and versatile
great video! i need to know if you are able to reach the battery?
yep! there's enough space for it!
Very nice. I like the weight distribution. I 75% of the time need a shotgun mic on my rig though and phantom power does drain battery. So I'm looking for nice and compact like this v-mount/rail solution. How long in average do you get with a monitor + camera until it switches to internal battery?
About 3-4 hours on the vb99! Monitor, camera, and wireless transmitter. I usually need two to power my rig for a whole day shoot!
@@VictorLaforteza Nice! Thank you for taking the time. Keep up the good work!
I have a similar rig but where do you mount an on camera mic? 😁
I usually swap out the video transmitter with a microphone. If I need both, I will swap out the handle with the XLR handle mount the monitor on top of it or with a magic arm with the handle extension and XLR cage.
Ganda ng videos mo bro! 🙌🏻
Salamat bro! 🙌🏽 I appreciate it!
Does your small rig top handle with the trigger sometimes just stop working? I have had it do that several times over the last couple of months. Usually shutting down the camera and re plugging in makes it work agin, but not always... It has a mind of it's own...
Hmmmm nope! I'll keep an eye and report back if it does act up at some point but so far so good for mine.
@@VictorLaforteza Thanks brother
Great rig, man.
Thank you! It’s been a work in progress
Video is excellent man! whats the red light source in the corner?
Nanlite forza 60c with a projection attachment :)
Love this video! What was your light setup and temperature?
Thanks! I think this one I was playing around with it. 5600k WB and then light was maybe 4200k? Can’t remember !! Sorry! Haha
How long to switch to a gimbal setup? Usually I do both during a shoot ;)
I have a b cam dedicated for gimbal! But I have a setup to switch between both. Just need to perfect the build!
You single handily sold me on the FX30 a week ago. Already here and now planning my rig. Have you got any recommendations for VND filters that won't burst the bank?
Haida VND is pretty great! NiSi True Colour VND seems to be the UA-cam favourite for now. I've also heard K&F is decent for it's price.
How did you attach the baseplate to the cage?
two 1/4 screws (I think they are a bit extended by 1/8). I got it from the smallrig extra screws
one part that i might buy is the matte box because my shots be super contrasty due to high shutter speeds and fast aperture
Yeah! It helps a lot especially with unwanted flares.
I might buy the acsoon Follow focus, since tilta announced their new one but hasn't released it yet...
I think it could be supply chain issues. I’ve seen it on other companies too. Either way, the accsoon is definitely worth while!
What text you used in this video
how long does the battery last with this specific setup?
about 4 hours!
May I ask what the song at the end is? Thnks!
Something new by Anthony Lazaro
Amazing video. Can I record pro res raw on the fx30 with a ninja V? Is it worth buying?
haven't tried pro res raw on the fx30 as I have no use for it but it is way more flexible than the internal codecs.
Hey Victor, does your monitor work when filming in 10bit 4K 60p? Or would you need the ninja v??
Thanks!
Yeah it’ll still show but the fps on the monitor is 30fps. Nothing too drastic since it’s just a reference monitor.
I might buy that follow focus 😁😁🤲🏽
It’s a cool addition!
First off, amazing video! Second, I’m new to creating rigs, would this setup work for the A7 IV as well? (Sorry if it’s a dumb question)
100% you can use it with an a7iv! :) happy rigging!
@@VictorLaforteza You're awesome, thank you so much! I'll make sure to use those links!
the smallrig monitor mount with small hinge on the side is very useful to tighten it, I had the one with the allen key on the side like you said is very hard to tighten especially when you forgot your allen key! 😂definitely going to buy that smallrig monitor mount with the small hinge on the side!
RIGHT!! I’ve had a shoot there it was just dangling untightened.. lol it’s the small things that matter!! Little conveniences add up into the whole experience.
Does this works well with cinematic effect filming?
Sorry I don’t understand the question :( what do you mean?
@@VictorLaforteza sorry, I was wondering is this like a cinematic rig?
Bro i keep hearing the song in the end, what is the title of the song?.
something new by anthony lazaro :)
one part that i might buy is the matte box
Nice rig … can this be used for the A7iii?
yes you can :)
Thanks 👊🏽 for the quick response
Any specific usb c cable ??
Any high speed usbc would work!
Wait so did you power the camera with USB c?
yup!
One thing to note is you can fry your camera. It happened to me. So you have to connect the camera power first and then the hdmi. If you do it the other way you can break it.
what's the name of music in the intro?
Zero by Ryan Taubert from musicbed!
Hye Victor! Whats the title of bgm for the intro?
I can't remember off the top of my head but I got it from musicbed!
might by that small rig battery at the back .... great rig man!!!!
Thank you!!! The smallrig battery looks so sleek!
I haven't had a chance to use the fx3, so I don't know what I might be missing physically (potentially better button layout for video, better grip, tally lights...)
Thanks once again for your feedback!
They're all amazing and capable cameras, very thankful that we have these sorts of problems in this day and age :)
Thanks for the info Victor and take care you guys!
Nice video 🙌🏾 looking for a new wireless follow focus was waiting for the new Tilta nano to come out but might take a look at this one it looks pretty cool.. just dropped a subscribe 👍🏾 also any chance your going to do a Fx30 set up video ? Just seen you’ve done a a7IV I’ve got both and always looking for the best ways to set them up lol
Amazing! Glad to have you here in the channel 🙌🏽 yes the setup video is coming soon :)
I’m looking to buy a bmp6k pro. So I’m definitely going to need a cage to attach a mic and imma need that battery pack lol.
Yeah!! I switch my handle to the Sony XLR one and put a mic on it. I totally forgot to put it on this video but yeah the smallrig VB99 has been great!! I'm hoping this lasts for years!!
@@VictorLaforteza no worries, great video. i hope it last you a long time as well. i shoot drumline content on my channel and i really want to level it up with bmp6kpro. every video on my channel has been shot with my iphone and its definitely served me well, but its time to take it to the next level!!!
how do you capture good audio?
Depends on the production. I usually add a shotgun microphone for doc work. If it's interview, I have a dedicated audio recorder with lavs and an overhead shotgun microphone.
but you can add everything to this setup right or would you need more rails mounts?
@@IzachBao yes, you can just switch the handle with the XLR handle with the smallrig extensions. That's the beauty of it, you can add or subtract whatever you want to it.
so which cage do you use? sorry
Smallrig cage fx3/fx30
I definitely need that small rig vmount!
All the ports!!!
Great Video
thank you!
Good video 👍🏻 I have the FX6 but I still use it nakedness 😂 but the FX3 is so small and awesome too
I’m looking at the buying fx6.. 👀👀
@@VictorLaforteza great choice 👍🏻😉
What i don´t get of these smallrig batteries is waht ydo you do qhen your batery dies,... you have to loose al connections and put another one, thats simply not good in certain eviroments like a ceremony, you need to be able to change batteries fast! and the also super expensive and fragile. Super nice video BTW
well the smallrig battery lasts for about 10-12 hours of continuous shooting. I think that's enough to cover an entire wedding day haha or atleast change it when you have a small break in between the ceremony and reception! It's not too troublesome to unplug and change a new v mount into the rig :)
@@VictorLaforteza it last´s that much?! oook, then it has much more sense, I tough it would last around 4-5 hours top. ok, I stand corrected
Def the vmount battery!
still going strong after bringing it to a ton of production!
I'd love to see manufacturers design flip out screens so they could disconnect and be mounted in other positions. It's such a weak point in the design. Nice rig though. You gave me some ideas.
I totally agree! That would be awesome so have if we can switch the screens to a different location! Better mounting options and rig possibilities
Great!
Okay! I will ask them if I could review the whole vision line 🙏🏽🙏🏽
thinking of those hdmi cables actually
They are indeed low profile!! love em.
It may not be the sexiest part of your list, but it sure is that Achille's heel (or hell !) of a serious rig.
Many times I told my son, you can have the most expensive car in the World... what if your accelarator cable breaks ? This is why top-quality cables matter, a lot !
So, thank you for mentionning good ones, they are now on my (Christmas ?) list. Eventually in my bag, some day soon.
GENIAL GRACIAS

I really want an fx30 now 😭
It’s such a beast of a camera!
Just about to order a rig for my A7 IV that has been lying in the package for like a month 🤣
You gotta get it up and running!!! 😂😂
awesome
Thank you 🙏🏽
A follow focus on a Sony body is overkill in a way lol. The autofocus is predictable enough. Nice rig tho!
Hahaha yes but it’s for those shots that need precise rack focus
Gangster!!!!
The fx30 beast is here
