Great video!! I'm definitely going to try NC50. I don't understand why MAC artists always dishing that NW45 shade out. It's like a deep red on my skin. Really not appealing at all. Thanks again!
I hated MAC until I finally found my match (NC 50). I had no idea. You are so right, as a brown girl it was NW45 was always suggested. Thanks for posting.
I see what you are saying...the NC50 looks more natural while the NW45 doesn't look terrible but it looks very obviously like makeup, it just looks a little off. Thanks for the informative vid!
Thanks for the info SB! I'm getting married next month and going to a MACPRO store in LAS VEGAS to have my makeup done. They ALWAYS have suggested the NW45 for me....I now have some options with the NC50! THANK YOU!
I would definitely agree. MAC foundations do tend to be extremly red/pink or extremly yelloworange. I've include some Revlon Color Stay foundations in my collection because their shades tend to fall nicely between cool & warm so as not to be too yellow/orange or too red.
thank u so much i had a issue with understanding wats the difference which one actually work and i concluded that niether on me NC would be bettter but NC50 is too light so thank you
I might ask to try a different color next time I go to MAC. Mine gets a lil reddish on me sometimes. I was so used to just buy the same foundation for years... Thanks for the info
Thank you, thank you, thank you, for this video. For the longest time I've been telling everyone that the NW45 made me look orange/red. I stopped using it because every time I would go to the MAC counter, they would recommend NW45.
I am so glad you did this video!! I'm a NW45 and always thought that it has a reddish-orange undertone and made me darker. I tried NW43 which was too light. The girls at MAC never recommended NC50 which is beautiful and I will give it a try. You're amazing. Thanks for this.
mann im so jealous my face really disagrees with Mac foundations i been tryin to work with them for abour 2 years now and it never fails, i break out and i always look like i have a mask on lolz and i was also told i was a NW45 but i found out im really an NW47 and i had NO idea an NW47 existed lol
Thank u for this vid. I had stopped using my NW45 because it was just toooo red! I'm rushing over there tomorrow to try out NC50!! AND the NC50 looks great on you...the other makes u darker and redder. Not cute.
i was an NW45 for a really long time, then i realised i was alot lighter than i used to be, and like i look yellow in the winter...I tried NW43 and its perfect for me , both the mineralize foundation, and the powder. but yeah its wierd!
Well by gosh, I guess that's why I took the NW45 back so long ago lol! It was too red/orange for me. Maybe I will try NC50, as if I need any more foundation lol!
Thank you for making this vid 4 years ago lol...it looks like my shade has changed or something (NW45 since 2009). I'm pretty sure I'm no longer NW45, it just doesn't look right anymore. Back to the drawing board (consultation)!!
Im an nc50 studio fix powder, but In select moisturecover concealer and studio finish i wear NC45. nc50 studio fix is too light for me in the summer. In the summer i wear nw40 select moisturecover...Mac shades r complicated lol
MAC's naming is unique then. While I agree that foundations marketed as "Warm" SHOULD contain a red/pink undertone, it's often not the case. Estee Lauder is another brand that markets "Cool" foundations with a red/pink undertone. I know this doesn't have much to do with my original post; I'm just engaging in dialogue.
we all cant afford mac products, and honestly there are really great alternatives out there, after a lot of trials and errors with mac, i switched to Marykay medium coverage foundation, and that is all i ever needed, sometimes i set with mac nc 45 or with any other drugstore powder.
Great video, there is a noticeable difference on my screen, but from where I'm sitting the NW45 matches your neck better. But of course it's all about preference. I'm an NW 43 also in fix. Actually, we are usually the same all around. What color are you in Becca?
What formula of NC50 are you using? I use NW45 in the Studio Fix Fluid....I asked one of the MAC consultants about using the NC50 a while back & she was like Nooooo....but....suggested I mix 2 diff foundations & I don't but my skintone is funny & I want a shade that isn't too redish-orange. Also, I use the mineralize skinfinish in Dark over it. Help!
U R so right I don't care what MAC store you go to they make up people put NC 45 or 50 on black women. I use MUFE 178.. for now. There is a NC 47 I havent tried it yet. waiting on a sunny day!
Ima tell you why I like this video! I had nc 50 and now have nw 47, yes 47!! and golly I want my nc 50 back! My face is too red and dark with nw 47!!!!! I can't STAND it!!!!!! So I'm going back to nc 50!
Woooow girl THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO....I went to a mac counter for the first time ever yesterday I was only interested in mac based on the ravings of utubers...the girl working the counter was a very 'high yellow' black girl. I asked her for a concealer for highlighting and she looked at me and expertly remarked that I was nw45. I asked for a demo. Sistagirl (who was soooo busy) was wrong. We went with nw40 & I am not even satisfied with how it looks with my kiss med/dark bb cream. I am gonna have to try NC50. You saved me years of heartache, thank you boo!!!!
Findation.com just color matched me for the NC50. I bought NW45 a couple of months ago and lawdddd it was so red on me when it oxidized. I am a warn undertone and from my research I should use a "cool" instead of a "warm"
Thank you for this video, everyone kept calling me a NW45 , and yesterday I went to the MAC Counter and an MAC artist did my makeup, and called it too red for me. When she did the NC50 on me, it looked perfect!
i have been wearing NW45 studio fix powder powder for years, until i switched to NW50 select sheer. that one is better. recently, i tried sculpt in NC47 and noticed i was too red/orange and just wrong. it even covered my cheekbones! i exchanged for NC50 and it looks like my skin! i also tried nc50 in the MAC's foundation and its great too. i think MAC's powders are very different from the creams/liquids. alot of people miss NC50 because they think NC=lighter skin NW=dark. so not true!
I've been a nc50 4 ever ....then one day after not wearing Mac for awhile I went back the artist told me I was nw45...I hated how it looked on my face ...way to orange/red . Anyway I recently went back & got the studio fix powder in nc50 & concealer ...way more natural ;) I use Bobbi brown liquid foundation in warm almond which has yellow base to it. Great vid ;)
i had that same problem. The people at the mac counter told me i was an NW45 ans some said i was NC50. I looked a little ashy with the NC50 and now i am back using NW45. i still dont like how the NW45 looks on me. It looks dewy and looks really red...i still dont know what to do
Girl you are so right...in the select foundation I am a NC 50.. in the Studio Fix powder I am NW43 which is perfect..the studio fix powder in NC 50 made me look ashy.
Thank you for this. I tried several NW foundations yesterday at the MAC counter. The NW colors are pretty. But, they make me look like I was wearing foundation. I was going for a more natural look for my foundation and the overwhelming red tones that NW colors were giving me didn't do that. Some people say that the NC colors are flat. But, I don't want to look like I am wearing foundation. The point of make up is to blend what you naturally look like not totally change ur look. I can bring out my eyes and lips to balance my look with the NCs better. Why are they pushing the NW colors so much I don't get it.
Hmmm this makes me think.. I went to Mac and immediately they told me I was NC45.. but it makes me look too red.. I defintely have yellow undertones.. I just don't think works for me. Revlon Colorstay in toast seems to be my perfect match. I just couldn't get my mac color right.. do you have any suggestions?
Hands down NC 50 for me. NW 45 is too red and doesn’t go with your undertones! I also noticed that MAC colors are not consistent. And, Ive also noticed that the MAC’s products colors are not consistent, case in point my NC 45 foundation is much lighter than my NC concealer.
For real, when I tried Mac years ago for the first time they gave me that NW45 too, I had no experience of foundations then so thought it was cool, I can tell you now I'm no way NW45, I'm finding my own shade.
interesting..i've been trying to figure out which mac foundation color is right for me..i wear n7 in face and body, which is so hard to match to a regular mac colors. nw40 concealers are a little too light, and nw43 is almost there just a little off. maybe i might need both. i have studio fix powder in nw43..would you recommend goin for the powder in the lighter or the darker shade?
I have realized the difference i have nc55 in the mineralized foundation and nw45 in studio tech and they are different. I notice in summer i need a different color than winter. I think the on color I do not like in nw 45 is the studio sculpt I have to apply powder to it or i look red.
I switched to NC50.. I always felt really dark and Red and NW45 and then I went down to NW 43 and it's just wasn't working and my sis used NC50 and she looked nice and not as RED as I did.
@ stilajunkie07 i dont mind at all, i think i look weired when my face looks 4 shades darker than my neck or chest, m gonna try n match my foundation to my neck next time.
@JoiDior they actually have a NW47 they "forget" to tell you about..just like they have an NW43 they "forgot" to tell me about...i dont understand why they do that
Just went to Mac yesterday and the MUA did exactly what you did side by side with those same colors and by my surprise nc50 was perfect!!had been wearing nw44 which it gave me that red look when I am yellow so yeah this video is awesome
Oh yeah, I'll try the jaw line check... but as for the neck check... many women of color have some discoloration or hyper-pigmentation on their neck and it may not be representative of the shade of the rest of their body (atleast the areas w/o hyperpigmentation)
I have NW43 studio fix powder. Sometimes on pics I thought I had a red tint but thought it was due to the blush. Next time I am the mac counter I may just try the nc range but will see
Very informative video. My first Mac foundation was a nc50. I loved the look as I have yellow undertones in the winter but in the summer they are red. Weird IDK Lol. But no matter the season my face is always darker than my neck. Any suggestions?
Omg! My so called friend that works at Mac just threw NW45 on me without paying attention to the fact that my chest was a completely different color. I walked around looking like an Ompah Loompah for a year. The NC40 looked much better.
@KpopManiacSFL Hi. The brands I currently use are: Iman Clay 4, Black Radiance, and Black Opal Truly Topaz mixed with a little Nutmeg. The only staple foundation I have is Iman's because I'm still searching for the "perfect foundation" for my skin. I want to just buy one "perfect foundation" instead of continuing buying several and mixing. I hope this helps and you find what you're looking for.If money isn't an issue for you, check out Lancome teint line, Chanel, and Makeup for Ever.
i noticed this a long time ago, but i never thought black people could use NC's. i thought we always fell into NW's. NW45 is too red for me, it looks good, but doesn't match my neck, so i started mixing NW45 with NC42 and it made the perfect match. even though i am brown skin, i have yellow undertones, not red!!!!!!!!!!!!!! why is it so hard to come up with foundations for women of color? they make it seem like rocket science.
Thanks always for all your videos / information / blogs etc. Anyway, I REALLY respect your opinion, but notice that you rarely speak / teach about Fashion Fair cosmetics. What are your thoughts on these products? Many of your tutorials mention the difficulty that women of color have finding foundations. Do you recommend Fashion Fair? Have you tried them? Whats your opinion? Thanks again for all your time and dedication.
I think that most Brown girls need to consider both a cool and warm foundation in order to accomodate the hyperpigmentation halo that sometimes surrounds the face. So, most ladies can wear a lighter color towards the center and blend out with a darker color on the edges of the face. I think it is important to maintain dimension in the face and sometimes you have use 2 colors to make the face pop so to speak.
I can't tell u ENOUGH how this video helped. I live in Jamaica n MAC found is UBER expensive. Studio Finish Concealer is ovr $2500 they dnt allow u to try the shade so im picky when I buy MAC My point: Ive been tryna figure out if I'm a NC50 or NW43...I know im yellow undertond as I've researched HOW to kno ur undertone (by lookn at ur wrist) and my veins are green. [Please correct me if I'm wrong here btw] THANK YOU SO MUCH! Keep up the good vidz n looking fwd to more tutorials :)
does the NC 50 have more of a yellow undertone? i just found out what my undertone was:) i had no idea. n when u wear a lighter foundation like the NC 50 do u look ashy in pics? idk. sometimes i just feel like its impossible to match my skin tone n make it look natural as dark skin women. im about ur complexion I THINK. But i didnt know darker skin women have yellowish undertones. Call me crazy but i had no idea. I always thought we were to dark to have a yellow undertone.
hii i love your videos they are very helpfull ....an yesss mac does alot of times just match browns girls to nw 45 like they said i was to but it makes me look darker that i am becus i have golden undertones too but i really dnt like non of the make foundations they are a lilittle to heavy forr me but my question was i want to try the face and body foundation an i do not live near a mac store so i was wondering i know if the have a color like the nc 50 because i hear there is not a colors
It's funny how NC=cool but has a yellow undertone, which in beauty school they tell you yellow is warm... and NW=warm which has a red undertone , which in school they say is cool... So who's wrong? School or MAC? lol. And I've has this happen to me also, i was 'matched' an NW45 when I'm actually an NW47. Thoes artists are idiots. Luckily, I know better.
Hey Erin I'm a MAC artist I love your video's but adding Studio Fix on top of foundation already applied to the face is not the best idea a good powder you can use to darken the perimeter of face would be Dark Mineralized Skinfinish or Deep Dark you can also do Pressed Select Sheer in NC 50. I hope you try it out.
thanks for this video...im having a problem with mac and the consistency of the complexions across the different product lines...ive wasted my money on the studio sculpt in nc50 and nw43...neither of them are working for me....i was faithful to nw45 for years but i started to realize that it made me look too dark...im going to the mac store this week to complain!
I mean this in the nicest way possible and I'm willing to be proven wrong so please don't think I'm trying to be a douche. It was always my understanding that NC=Not Cool and NW=Not Warm. It's sort of supported by the fact that nearly every brand that markets a "Warm" foundation is of yellow undertone and the same for "Cool" foundations. Say, Tru Match for example.
Great video!! I'm definitely going to try NC50. I don't understand why MAC artists always dishing that NW45 shade out. It's like a deep red on my skin. Really not appealing at all. Thanks again!
Great Video!!! I actually wear both NW45 more in the summer and NC50 in the winter
your passion for makeup is sooo very sweet! I dont even wear makeup but I love to watch you good luck in ur career!
Thanks for the informative vid!
very good information. I actually tested in a consultation as a NC45 in satin finish foundation and my powder is a NW43.
I've include some Revlon Color Stay foundations in my collection because their shades tend to fall nicely between cool & warm so as not to be too yellow/orange or too red.
thank u so much i had a issue with understanding wats the difference which one actually work and i concluded that niether on me NC would be bettter but NC50 is too light so thank you
I use nw 43 for capuchino skin.very nice for my dry skin.its content coconut oil.you are good to go with right side
What is that on your lips? BEAUTIFUL !!!! Like a muted , creamy, coffee creamer...but not too nude/chalky and not too shiny. I LOVE it !!!
Not cute.
I currently wear NW45 but Im going to test NC50 as well. Thanks for the great info!!
This was a very necessary video, There is a big difference and it was helpful to see it side-by-side on your face. Thank you.
i was an NW45 for a really long time, then i realised i was alot lighter than i used to be, and like i look yellow in the winter...I tried NW43 and its perfect for me , both the mineralize foundation, and the powder. but yeah its wierd!
Well by gosh, I guess that's why I took the NW45 back so long ago lol! It was too red/orange for me. Maybe I will try NC50, as if I need any more foundation lol!
So glad i found this video. Because i was told i was an nw45 but in daylight it look soooo red! so red that it doesn't match the best of my body.
Thank you for making this vid 4 years ago lol...it looks like my shade has changed or something (NW45 since 2009). I'm pretty sure I'm no longer NW45, it just doesn't look right anymore. Back to the drawing board (consultation)!!
I wear MUFE Matte Velvet 75 with NC50 Powder on top. I love the combo!
meant to say it doesnt have a lot of red but more of a nice brown color!
What color purple are you wearing? Could you put the colors you are wearing when you are doing a tutorial even if it is not on eyeshadow?
to be honest you can go either way depending on how you feel
or mix it both
me personally i like the redder look
but im not a nc50 or nw45
im a nc43
Great tutorial.. I will definitely be checking out the NC 50 next MAC visit! Thanks for sharing!
Im an nc50 studio fix powder, but In select moisturecover concealer and studio finish i wear NC45. nc50 studio fix is too light for me in the summer. In the summer i wear nw40 select moisturecover...Mac shades r complicated lol
I think that the NW45 looks more natural on u, but maybe u can kind of mix them.
Can You Tell Me The Name Of The Video You Did That Supports Having Your Hair Natural And Why It's Better To Have Natural Natural Hair?
Thanks***
Never worn this brand but looking to.
I went to a MAC artist, and she gave me the shade NW45.
@scandalousbeauty NC 50 is definitely my color. NW 45 is gorgeous, but it looks crazy on me.
thx ladies....imma look into it.
How does NC 50 compare to NW 50. NC 50 is to light for me
MAC's naming is unique then.

Also, I use the mineralize skinfinish in Dark over it. Help!
I can tell the difference, great video! I'm gonna buy an NC shade.
I was told I'm Nw43 my face was pale and my neck was Brown!
U R so right I don't care what MAC store you go to they make up people put NC 45 or 50 on black women. I use MUFE 178.. for now. There is a NC 47 I havent tried it yet. waiting on a sunny day!
girl your hair is growingg!
it looks great :)
I also have dry skin
thank u!!!! i knew i wasnt an expert! i feel great now! ur wonderful girl!
great vid!! verified everything for me!!
Nc50 looks better on you but with a sprinkle of nw45 would be perfect
very helpful!!
Great video, it's nice to see them side by side! I actually mix the two colors, so for those of you who are inbetween, give that a try:)
Thanks for sharing !!!!!!!!
Thanks for the information:)
AWESOME VIDEO. Good Points you brought out. :-)
i actually think the nw45 looks better on you.
I don't know, for me the one that's more red looks more natural on your skin
Ima tell you why I like this video! I had nc 50 and now have nw 47, yes 47!! and golly I want my nc 50 back! My face is too red and dark with nw 47!!!!! I can't STAND it!!!!!! So I'm going back to nc 50!
Oh wow, that's a big difference!!!
Woooow girl THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO....I went to a mac counter for the first time ever yesterday I was only interested in mac based on the ravings of utubers...the girl working the counter was a very 'high yellow' black girl. I use nc50 in the centre of my face, and nw50 around my mouth, jaw and forehead (edges). I get better coverage that way
Findation.com just color matched me for the NC50.
Wow. I can totally see the difference. This was helpful.
i have been wearing NW45 studio fix powder powder for years, until i switched to NW50 select sheer. that one is better. recently, i tried sculpt in NC47 and noticed i was too red/orange and just wrong. it even covered my cheekbones! i exchanged for NC50 and it looks like my skin! i also tried nc50 in the MAC's foundation and its great too. i think MAC's powders are very different from the creams/liquids. alot of people miss NC50 because they think NC=lighter skin NW=dark. so not true!

i had that same problem. The people at the mac counter told me i was an NW45 ans some said i was NC50. I looked a little ashy with the NC50 and now i am back using NW45. i still dont like how the NW45 looks on me. It looks dewy and looks really red...i still dont know what to do
OMG! Thank you! I've been an NW 45 wearer for over 10 years! I may give NC50 a try!
I always wondered why when I put on my NW45 I felt like I was "dulling" out and covering up my "natural" brightness to my face. Thank you!
Yeah, I'm going to have to agree with you on that one. Many of my face products aren't consistent either.
I'm really confused , you said you are not using studio fix what are you using??
Ugh, I said my NW45 was looking red to me, so u went and got a sample of NC55 I can't wait to try it now. Also got NW43
For real, when I tried Mac years ago for the first time they gave me that NW45 too, I had no experience of foundations then so thought it was cool, I can tell you now I'm no way NW45, I'm finding my own shade.
Just please stop pulling your skin down when you apply. Stroke upward. Down pukks skin down, up well pulls the skin up.
interesting..i've been trying to figure out which mac foundation color is right for me..i wear n7 in face and body, which is so hard to match to a regular mac colors. nw40 concealers are a little too light, and nw43 is almost there just a little off. maybe i might need both. i have studio fix powder in nw43..would you recommend goin for the powder in the lighter or the darker shade?
I don't like the liquid foundation, it clogs my porrs even though the package says it's noncosmegenic
I have realized the difference i have nc55 in the mineralized foundation and nw45 in studio tech and they are different. I notice in summer i need a different color than winter. I think the on color I do not like in nw 45 is the studio sculpt I have to apply powder to it or i look red.

@ stilajunkie07
i dont mind at all, i think i look weired when my face looks 4 shades darker than my neck or chest, m gonna try n match my foundation to my neck next time.
@JoiDior they actually have a NW47 they "forget" to tell you about..just like they have an NW43 they "forgot" to tell me about...i dont understand why they do that
Have you tried Nars foundation?
I am between Caldiz and New Orleans. I have oily skin and I am very confused.
Mac just didn't work for me.
Just went to Mac yesterday and the MUA did exactly what you did side by side with those same colors and by my surprise nc50 was perfect!!had been wearing nw44 which it gave me that red look when I am yellow so yeah this video is awesome
the NW45 is way too dark for you and most brown girls. For me I only go for the NW shades if I have a dark skinned client
nc 50 looks wayy better on her
Oh yeah, I'll try the jaw line check... but as for the neck check... many women of color have some discoloration or hyper-pigmentation on their neck and it may not be representative of the shade of the rest of their body (atleast the areas w/o hyperpigmentation)
I always thought that I was nw 45, today I bought nc 50, glad I did.
I have NW43 studio fix powder. Sometimes on pics I thought I had a red tint but thought it was due to the blush. Next time I am the mac counter I may just try the nc range but will see

Studio Finish
Concealer is ovr $2500 they dnt allow u to try the shade so im picky when I buy MAC
My point: Ive been tryna figure out if I'm a NC50 or NW43...I know im yellow undertond as I've researched HOW to
kno ur undertone (by lookn at ur wrist) and my veins are green.
[Please correct me if I'm wrong here btw]
THANK YOU SO MUCH!
You are on point with this video b/c I've been matched to so many colors: NC50, NC45, NW43 and NW45. It's crazy lol. BTW: you snowed in too? :)
