    • @Fcutdlady

      OM G costs a fortune to get asbestos removed . this is because it is highly carcinogenic and it can't be let into the air , it can only be removed by highly trained people in certain locations . google asbestosis to see what I mean. a lot people have died of it . also , from what I can read , the far east has flooded the market with scrap metal . you would get more money breaking them for parts then trying g to scrap them.

    • @Fcutdlady
      @Fcutdlady 7 років тому +1

      coolbluelights excellent idea but it would depend on how much plastic goes into making up the train. it all costs money. if you can make a decent profit out of it then most likely that will happen . that being said if there is no profit big companies don't see the point. not all plastics can be used for storing food . it must be food grade plastic.

      John V There is no way that a train car could ever be placed as homes for the homeless because the city is too crowded and it would have to be placed somewhere far far away where there's lots of room, but only that'll just makes things worse because it would just sit there and rust from rain and poison the waters. Now i no expert on this but i do know it has to be placed far away and it rusts if not maintainedl

    • @zudemaster
      @zudemaster 7 років тому +13

      Museum pieces? Think of the massive amount of cars you are talking about. How many museums would want one?
      Homeless shelters? Are you going to pay to refurbish them, to provide electricity and plumbing for the homeless to live in them?
      Would you want a homeless shelter set up across the street from your house made up of old subway cars?

    • @fearlesscrusader
      @fearlesscrusader 7 років тому +3

      Zudemaster, I agree that there are way more cars than museums that would want one. But as far as homeless shelters are concerned, the cost of conversion wouldn't be so much if the homeless people provided all the labor. They have time on their hands and we all know an idle mind is the devil's workshop. Yes, I would rather have a homeless shelter set up across from my home than to have unsheltered homeless people living there.

    Before anyone else comes along and writes "why did they just scrap/recycle the trains!" or some other line.
    The trains were loaded with asbestos. when this stuff is airborne, it's basically deadly, causing lung cancer. To remove it, you need specialized equipment, you need specially trained personnel and you need a safe place to do it. all of these are expensive and time consuming. They tried it once, doing it the way you all would have preferred, it took them weeks just to do one train.
    The MTA had two choices, spend more than the trains were worth to get the asbestos removed, or just get rid of them.
    Reefing them was chosen because Asbestos is harmless when immersed in water. the trains were power washed clean of anything that could harm marine life before being loaded on to the barges and dumped.

      How do the fish know about it? How do they get there? You think they get a brochure in the mail saying "Come to Fish Terminal in the middle of the Atlantic" or you think they just swim out to the middle of the ocean looking for a new housing project? Research is good, but you also have to think before you come up with cockeyed schemes.

    • @thomaslevy2119

      True. At the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean there is little oxygen to cause corrosion. However, corrosion still happens, but more slowly. Hence, the "rustcicles" you see in photos. There are also iron-eating bacteria that are dissolving the Titanic, too. It will not last forever. Nothing does.

    Well creating an artificial reef seems nice, but then it also means new metals have to mined out of the earth, refined and processed to make new cars rather than simply recycling the old ones, which creates a lot of air pollution, not to mention wastes the earth's metal reserves, which are a finite resource. So I am definitely NOT sold on the idea of this being an environmentally friendly thing to do!

      So how much can it cost to remove it, compared to the value of stainless steel? Does everything have to be about the dollars? Stainless steel has skyrocketed in price because there isn't enough to go around for all the countries that want it now. China pays top dollar for it, why didn't we sell these cars to them and let them deal with the asbestos? How and why did asbestos get into a container for humans anyway? I think you're just making up silly excuses.

    Some facts to sort out some misconceptions. The dumping was intentionally done to reverse damage in areas where coral was damaged due to human activity. Instead of recycling for new trains, you could consider this as recycling for new marine life - certainly a noble idea. Further, this was a project that is now complete and currently the NYCTA scraps their cars for recycled metal just like everyone else.
    This has nothing to do with asbestos, nor waste - it was an environmental project that turned out to be successful in promoting aquatic life at the site.

    Artificial reefs, all toxic and hazardous materials removed before they are dropped. I learned about these as a child back in the late 1960's while fishing with my father off the coast of Texas. You want to catch lots of fish, you go fish next to the oil rigs.

    Nice didn't know this. Does seem wasteful but NYC is the biggest fish market in the world. I can understand why they would want to create fish habitats to enrich the quality and quantity if fish locally.

    Why not rebuild them? We'd need a brand-new R100a by Kawasaki which would've saved the MTA tons of cash thwarting the fare-hikes or even lowering the fares.
    The Robin-cars are no exception. The MTA should've thought about recycling them all.

    • @thomaslevy2119
      @thomaslevy2119 7 років тому

      Actually, all these cars have been rebuilt more than once during their very long service lives. Most were built in the 1950's and 1960's. Their car bodies suffer from metal fatigue and corrosion from the heavy pounding they get in daily service. They were retired due to maintenance costs and safety concerns. Nothing lasts forever.

    For those complaining, these reefs are very safe and help rebuild sea ecosystems that were destroyed for construction or something. This is an easier alternative than building reefs for that purpose. Also, it's not a bad thing that it is not melted down again. Scrap yards will not be likely to run out of metal for a long time.
