When I was 8, I got a German Shepherd puppy. We went everywhere together ... played Barbie ... read books ... painted pictures ... took walks ... picked pecans. She was my best friend and confidant. When I was 11, she put herself between me and a very large water mocassin. She took the bite. Then, with venom going through her body, she got us home. Miraculously, she lived over it. And the breed has had a special place in my heart, ever since.
For my daughter it was a rattle snake but poor biscuits didn't survive the bite. My daughter and biscuits sister gravy still made sure his bowl was full long after his passing. And gravy doesn't touch biscuits bowl even as she's now in her older years. (She named them after their fur and conveniently her favorite breakfast)
The moment my new granddaughter came home from the hospital the family German Shepherd was in love. When the baby would cry Ky would look at us with disdain, letting us know we were not capable of caring for this precious bundle. Ky and her precious bundle were together for a few years before Ky went to heaven. My granddaughter was so broken hearted that she slept in Ky’s bed for a while. We still tear up when we remember that amazing dog and all the love she shared with us.
As a 15 year K9 handler in law enforcement, I can attest the accuracy and authenticity of this. I retired after 35+ years total, and to this day still have GSDs.......
Our GSD near on bowled me over to take out a King brown snake that I almost ran into and didn't even see. She smashed that thing but got bit in the process. Managed to get her to the vet on time just. It was a bit touch and go for awhile but she pulled through
My neighborhood dog named Warf, protected me from another dog, he was not playin 😂 But I loved dude, I tried to converse with him in the backyard but he looked at me like 🫤

My parents adopted a GS an about a year before my sister was born. He began guarding sis from the minute she came home - visible in every picture taken during her first 6 months. Julius loved Mom & baby, but turned on Dad - growled/snarled when he approached crib. I think the dog was whip smart and tuned in - that he knew Dad was a chaotic, aggressive drunk and not to be trusted. Julius finally lunged at my father and was quickly rehomed (not my Mom’s decision). These are deeply connected, intuitive dogs.
It seems that the dog is still trying to learn what the different sounds that the baby is making actually mean, such as whether the baby is in distress, upset, or happy. They are absolutely precious together!

What humans have on top of that (the neocortex) helps us to think more, but not necessarily feel more.

Me and my grandfather's dutch shepherd (Who unfortunately passed last year) grew up together and we had a deep bond like this child and their dog, brings back memories ❤
The bond and love between those two is beautiful and undeniable! The dog was more concerned about the baby laughing into hyperventilation than the parents, who seem more concerned with a cute shot, then their baby possibly being unable to breathe.

German Shepherd’s are a breed and individuals of that breed have a broad range of temperaments some of which are incompatible with small children. This dog is obviously really devoted to the little girl.

I thought Great Pyrenees were the Gentle Giants. They go into protective mode too, but more giant than GS.

The moment my new granddaughter came home from the hospital the family German Shepherd was in love. When the baby would cry Ky would look at us with disdain, letting us know we were not capable of caring for this precious bundle. We still tear up when we remember that amazing dog and all the love she shared with us.
