Hey everyone, As usual UA-cam are being a pain and have demonetised this video, why? I have no idea. Luckily when this happens I have the Patrons in my corner. It'd be great if you considered support the channel on Patreon to help when dumb stuff like this happens. www.patreon.com/nameexplain
as long as I remember, texas comes from the spanish word "texas" or "tejas" (it's pronounced like "has" in spanish) and means "the land of roof tile houses"
Thank you! I was literally just thinking about this, I remember reading one state name was completely made up but couldn't remember which one! Definitely going to look into this.
"Bexar" is pronounced "Bay - Har" or, for those that pronounce it very quickly and run the syllables together, it sounds more like "Bear". It's just one of those words in Texas that is a bit different and easily mispronounced enabling native Texans to know who "ain't from round these parts".
The way people pronounce Mexia is a weird one. "Muh-HAY-uh" oh and Manchaca, a street in Austin, is pronounced "Man-Shack" by the locals. And it's supposed to be spelled Menchaca.
It's OK, it's even harder here in Ohio. Names of small cities that are spelt like famous places are never pronounced right here. Russia is rooshie, Versailles is fer sales, Rio Grande is rye oh grand.
As a resident of Bexar County I always get a little upset when someone I watch or listen to that usually does quite a bit of research mispronounces it. But as someone who used to live in Georgia I guess I can kind of understand it as Forsyth Park in Savannah is pronounced completely different from Forsyth, the city/suburb of Atlanta.
As a Born and Raised Texan, thanks for shining a spotlight on home. I can tell you that the Lone Star is more about being independent than joining the US, at least from the people in my circle of friends. I love this place and all the great, rich history about how everything here came to be. I am super jealous of Caleb, having just found your channel yesterday and having the next day be Texas is just crazy. Keep up the great work.
Thanks I love in Dallas and people always talk about the history of Texas but never it’s name also March 3rd should be Texas nationalism day. Viva le Tejas
wrcarter4 No state can ever secede from the Union. Don't like it, leave The States. No state, not Texas or California would win a fight with the rest of the country.
I love this video! And I’m from Texas but have some English heritage! :) Any way, Yes “Bexar” is pronounced like in Spanish (properly) as “Bay-HAHR” or more Americanized/Texan style like the word “Bear”. I forget the linguistic history but at some point we were called by name of “Tejas” (i.e. “TAY-hahs”) which evolved into “Texas” . But that’s a fun video!
In the space of 30 years (1836-1866) Texas was part of Mexico, then independent, then part of the USA, then part of the CSA, then part of the USA again. That lone star was staying pretty busy :P
A lot of American states can be translated as 'friend'. But it's not as copacetic as you might think. It has more to do with translation issues. When European settlers first contacted the natives of these lands, one of the first questions they'd ask would be "What do you call yourselves?" The common Native American response to a bunch of strangers pointing at you as if to ask "Who are you guys?" is to respond "Friends" as in "We come in peace." The Spanish, like the English and the French in other areas, went along with it and presumed that Texas (in this case) was the name of the people, and named the land after their people.
It´s funny that the Chilean flag is also called "The lone star" (la Estrella Solitaria in spaish) , they are so similar but there is no actual link betwen the two, they where desing independently from each other. Big coincidences.
Didn't the American settlers kind off took Texas from Mexico and the people who lived there before? I read an interesting article putting a parallel to what the US did with texas and what Russia did with Crimea.
Many Tejanos, the native Hispanic population, sided with the Anglo settlers in the war of independence, and Texas wasn’t the only Mexican state that tried to become independent, Yucatán, for example, tried to become independent and was actually an ally of Texas. As for the Anglos, most of them migrated legally to the area, as the Mexican government wanted ‘civilized’ settlers to settle the sparsely populated Tejas to combat the Native Americans tribes in the area.
Whites were encouraged to move to Texas by the Mexican government, which wanted to increase the population of a very sparsely populated area. Incentives were given, and so settlers came. Eventually, too many settlers would arrive, and they outnumbered the Mexicans in the territory. At this point the Mexican government began cracking down on the whites, requiring things like knowledge of Spanish and conversion to Catholicism before granting citizenship or legal rights. Then they banned slavery, and wanted to set the slaves that had been brought by the American settlers free. This, along with increasingly repressive conditions, triggered a revolt where Texas was able to separate from Mexico on its own. Due to overwhelming debts, Texas joined the union, and the federal government assumed the debts Texas had incurred. However, the boundary between Texas and Mexico was a matter of dispute, and this was used by U.S. president Polk as a casus belli to start the Mexican American war. All this happened gradually over a couple of decades following Mexico's independence from Spain and ended in the war that started in 1846. Crimea, while similar on the surface, is a very different situation. It's basically a strategic imperative for Moscow, due to the port of Sevastopol being home to Russia's black sea fleet. Russians had lived there for centuries due to the fleet, and many were surprised that Stalin gave Crimea to Ukraine in the first place, but when he did so, both countries were in the USSR, so it didn't really matter. Geographically, and, to a lesser extent, demographically, Crimea should be part of Ukraine, but the important parts of it have been Russian for ages. In that sense, Russia feels it's rightfully taking Crimea back rather than conquering a new territory, as was the case with America and Texas.
After Texas gained independence from Mexico, it functioned as an independent republic for nine years. Yes, for a period, Texas was a country. At that point, Texas requested to be annexed by the U.S.
Texas was also once called New Philippines as well when Spain was in control of it. When Spain gave Mexico it's independence Mexico renamed it to Texas. If you don't believe me you can. Search it online. Just wanted to share a bit of history that doesn't normally get mentioned often in history books..
Spanish words in Texas, such as place names, routines got mispronounced or partially mispronounced by many of the Anglo (white, English) settlers. -- But some names were still pronounced properly. -- For example, "Bexar" is not pronounced as in English. It's not Beck-Ssarr County, it's "Beh-HHAHR" County (and town), named after a person. You'll hear a mix of Spanish words pronounced differently in Texas. The X is usually an "eks" sound, but in Spanish, X, J, and soft G can all be an H sound or the strong HH like in Scottish loch or German Bach, Buch. Older Spanish also sometimes had X, J, and soft G as a SH sound, which is why the Tejas (Tay-shahss) Indians became Tejas (Teh-Hhahss) and then Texas and then in English, Texas (Tek-sas). Yet San Jacinto went from "Hah-seen-toh" to "Juh-sin-toh." -- When in doubt, consult a Texas native. :)
You might want to look into the Republic of West Florida, the original Lone Star. It has a flag exactly the same as Texas first flag, except the Star was white, it's called the Bonnie Blue. This all happened before Texas seceded from Mexico.
Alexander E02 I live in the Panhandle of Florida and occasionally you'll see the Bonnie Blue on the back of a truck or car. In Florida history classes you'll get some info usually on West Florida and it likes to show up on maps around he state at business establishments.
I'm from Texas and no one thinks we should be independent from the union lol with that said everyone here is proud to be from Texas from where I live in Houston to El Paso. That Texas pride its strong
You missed out the opportunity to tell the story behind the transition Tayshas->Texas! well I guess the name of the channel is not name evolution explain... anyway, in old Spanish the X used to represent the SH sound so originally Texas was a direct phonetic transcription from the word Tayshas, in the same way Taysha itself is a phonetic transcription of the indigenous word into modern English. As time passed and Spanish continue change the SH sound started to drift into an H sound (as in Hello) but for most other European languages the letter X represented...well...the X sound so they would just read it as they saw it written, and that's how we get the modern name and pronunciation for the lone star state. Bonus note: the same thing happened to many names such as to Mexico and Don Quixote, which in modern Spanish are pronounced MeHico and Don QuiHote and written Mexico and Don Quijote (The X was changed to J to reflect the change in pronunciation but it remained in some proper names)
The two stars on the flag of Coahuila y Texas (Which you found to be "interesting") represent the two regions of Coahuila and ("y" in spanish) Texas, joined together at the time to make the Mexican state of Coahuila y Texas. The word Tejas was the actual word used by the Spanish. Taysha is the English spelling while Tejas is the Spanish spelling. And they didn't mean it to mean friend or ally, they just mistook it for the Caddo's name. I'm sure they figured that out, but the name stuck anyway and changed from Tejas to Texas (A much more logical change than Taysha)
0:01 Idaho and Montana are now the same state and all of both parts of Michigan are fully connected And Vermont is part of New York And Michigan borders Minnesota
Fun fact: Most people associate Florida and sunshine, but South Dakota used to be nicknamed “The Sunshine State.” It is now known as “The Mount Rushmore State” (for obvious reasons).
Hm.... is that so? The naming of Texas? Here's pronounced /tehas/, plural of "teja" which are the ceramic curved bricks used to decore roofs; it seemed straight forward.
Major General Major General Samuel Holden Parsons commander of the Texas State 19th Cavalry Regiment sent reinforcements to aid Florida . Texas & Florida both shared the fact that were there own country a separate independent State. So the Bonnie Blue Flag that was given as a gift was sown into the Design of the Texas State Flag it represents the trail of tears moaring the loss of the troops who died .
Love your videos, you remind me of an old Game Theory, except you're Geo Theory, but I like how you speak quite quick and don't force unfunny comedy, you just let it come

0:05 Idaho and Vermont are missing!
Viva le tejas
My favorite thumbnail so far
I'm so happy I'm not the only one in love with this thumbnail, the Texas flag is just perfect.
PolyMatter are you from texas? I am
Why is Montana and Idaho the same state at the begginning? And why do the great lakes not exist? And Vermont is also gone, just like Delaware
Fiery Gaming am I allowed to blame my broken wrist? Or should I blame the map of the US I traced? Or should I just take the blame?
Name Explain i am sorry, i forgot about your broken wrist lol, but it could also be the map you copied
Name Explain Is it true that Idaho is a made-up name? Hope your wrist gets better soon mate.
Thank you! I was literally just thinking about this, I remember reading one state name was completely made up but couldn't remember which one! Definitely going to look into this.
No worries man, the map I copied was a screen shot of google maps and it can tend to get a bit hard to see on there. Should've used a clearer map.

I was gonna comment the same thing.
The only reason I knew that was from "Dr. G, Medical Examiner"

SECONDQUEST I said we would make it, I didn’t say it would/could/should happen. Calm down.
Oh cool, an educational video, nothing controversial.
*LeTs DeMoNiTiSe It*
Some things deserve demonetization, some don't, I wonder what there is to demonetize here?
I’m from Texas, and I approve of this video.

are Irish's "gallda" (foreign) and the "Gall" in DoneGall related to the Germanic root *W(e)alhaz (Wales, Wallon, Welsche)?

+Rockin' Roll The Tejanos willingly joined the fight for independence from Mexico, moron.

Im from Florida but Texas’s nickname sounds so badass. “The lone star state” literally what’s not to like about that nickname.

We came first
Caleb Stephenson 1810 comes before 1836
Fine but we were a country longer than West Florida
Caleb Stephenson fine you can have that. Although, West Florida wanted to join the US, only it wanted to be it's own state.
Alexander E02 I live in the Panhandle of Florida and occasionally you'll see the Bonnie Blue on the back of a truck or car. In Florida history classes you'll get some info usually on West Florida and it likes to show up on maps around he state at business establishments.
Well as a Texan myself it nice to hear about this
I’m Texan and we learned this in 4th grade. This isn’t hate I really like channel.
Seeing as how I am a native Texan I had to watch this. Good job my man.
Chile's flag is called "The lone star flag" as well, and it looks like Texas' one
At 0:06 why is there no border between Idaho and Montana?
RealSwiftie13 And Michigan and Wisconsin
I'm from Texas and no one thinks we should be independent from the union lol with that said everyone here is proud to be from Texas from where I live in Houston to El Paso. That Texas pride its strong
Why is Missouri called the show-me state?
It was coined in a speech made by a Missouri politician to congress in the 1800s. Hmmm, not very interesting now that I think about it, huh?
Cheap ass motto 😒
You missed out the opportunity to tell the story behind the transition Tayshas->Texas! well I guess the name of the channel is not name evolution explain... anyway, in old Spanish the X used to represent the SH sound so originally Texas was a direct phonetic transcription from the word Tayshas, in the same way Taysha itself is a phonetic transcription of the indigenous word into modern English. Where did the name of the Philippines came from?
Inbhe beginning montana and idaho are fused together is that a mistake or
The two stars on the flag of Coahuila y Texas (Which you found to be "interesting") represent the two regions of Coahuila and ("y" in spanish) Texas, joined together at the time to make the Mexican state of Coahuila y Texas.

How come all of your videos have stretched aspect ratios?
0:01 Idaho and Montana are now the same state and all of both parts of Michigan are fully connected
And Vermont is part of New York
And Michigan borders Minnesota
I saw on another similar comment that it was because of your wrist. That’s a valid excuse in my opinion
long island does not exist nor does vancouver island
I'm a Texans and I've learned this so many times but I still watched this lmao
Nice work m8 love your videos
I reside in the wonderful Centennial State! Named so because it was founded 100 years after the nation itself - 1876.
Loving that Montandaho in the opening map
Why are Idaho and Montana connected at the start of the video?
Same goes for New York and Vermont!

Prussian Eagle yeah but are they texas? Thought not.
Nate Wec--BTW-- Where is the star? I'd like to go see it.
That’s right boy!
Doesn't the thumbnail explain it all?

I’m wondering, why are New York and Vermont connected?
Great video
amazing video
Wait a minute. What about the name Tejas?
Nice video as always! Your US map lacks Vermont and Idaho though.
0:00 visual proof that Idaho doesn’t exist and is just a figment of our imaginations
I think it's an animation error.
JaceGarciasWorlds #8765 no
The NuggetBacon remember? Patrick (the guy who narrates the videos) broke his arm!
Love your videos, you remind me of an old Game Theory, except you're Geo Theory, but I like how you speak quite quick and don't force unfunny comedy, you just let it come
more importantly why does the moon have a hole in it on Texas number plates? this is evident to the star placed inside the hole. also why does it show the crescent on the left not the right?
huh didnt expect this one
According to Sheldon Cooper, lone Star is Texas's Yelp review
Just subed
Isn’t Virginia’s nickname Old Dominion?? I’d love to know where that came from! Love ur vids
Vermont,a state you think about so little that you didn't even realize New York annexed it while you weren't looking
What is up with the US map? Idaho and Montana are together. As are New York and Vermont. I get that it's a rough drawing (hence my exclusion of the missing Great Lakes and Delaware), but it would've been a few more drawn lines away from me not calling this out.
Centaur Man15 He broke his hand cut him some slack.
0:05 Appearantly, Montana and Idaho are now one state
I thought that you woud talk about how similar is the texas flag with chile's flag which by the way we also call it "the lone star flag"
So small video?
I’m here for that cute country song playing
Texas is also known as the six flags state as it flew 6 different flags along its history the lone star is just one.
I'm not from Texas but I love Texas ❤
I feel like I've seen this thumbnail before from CHP grey
Suggestion: for Star Wars: Episode Nine: explain the names of ALL the canon planets in Star Wars. I personally believe that Tatooine is on par with Tattoo & that its stellar geography was on par with Israel & its ‘histories’.
Thought it was a Spaceballs reference. So disappointed.
I haven't watched your explanation for our state name yet but this is the true answer
Texas is derived from Comanche Tejas which means comrade or ally
I always thought Texas was named after Lake Texocco. The site of the famous Tenochtitlan
Montana??
Freedom for Skellingthorpe! A separate country the sheep are OURS!
Iowa and Montana aren't one state. Where did Vermont go? What happened to the Great Lakes?
I think the lone star state nickname is The coolest nickname
why is Missouri called the show me state?
At the start in the us map u merged Idaho and Montana into one state
You should do a bunch or American city/State nicknames that seem obvious but have a less obvious origin. Wisconsin the badger state for example
why is that us map at the beginning so inaccurate
As a free Spanish lesson, "Bexar" is pronounced BAY-har, strange as it may seem.
You forgot the Idaho-Montana border at the beginning...
You should do a video on North Carolina, the Tar Heel State.
Please can you explain to wor how and why “España” is Spain in English and why and “Español” is Spanish is English? :)
Džudžan Thanks for telling me sir/madam! ;) :)
Džudžan Ya know what I like about Spanish? He’s basically the half heart laid back cool dude everyone wants to hang out with! 😃😃😃😃 Italian is his older and wiser Latin brother and French is his slightly older twin sister who’s a extremely irresistible really very hard to get girlfriend every fancies! 😃😃😃😃😃 And everyone securely fancies his bashful yet friendly cousin Portuguese! 😃😃😃😃😃 German is Dutch’s older Latin and Germanic brother and Dutch is English’s older creatively pedantic cousin! 😃😃😃😃 Yeah, what I’m saying is silly, but that’s how they say them Language are similar to English thus considered not too hard to learn! 😃😃😃😃
This might be kind of obscure but you should do why is Missouri the “show me state”
Lone star shine down on my home town...
Let’s hear it for the state of Texas🇨🇱(this was the closest I could get to a Texas flag)
I actually live in Texas
I was the patron
*Hint: the answer is in the thumbnail*
Are there any Hamilton left
The stars at night are big and bright 👏👏👏👏............
Joined you mean annexed
Cuz it had one star on its flag and was independent from the US before it became a state
And the Ohio state is called the Buckeye State.
You should do how Wales got its name.
