As a native Chinese speaker, I found the slogan on these builds kinda interesting. Airfiled, 空軍軍官學院 airforce officer academy Propaganda centre, 停車處 parking area; 立入禁止區域 Exclusion zone (this is written in Japanese expression) Command centre, 人不犯我,我不犯人,We will not attack unless we are attacked (famous quote from Mao, still being used by CCP today) and all these Chinese characters are written in traditional Chinese, PRC uses simplified Chinese since 1950s.
Native Chinese here, and I want to share some lores and personal views 1、For the command center, it says "人不犯我,我不犯人",means:"If we are not offensed by the others, we should not offense the others." But this sentence actually has a second part: "人若犯我,我必犯人”, means:" if we are offensed by the others, we are definitely going to offense the others." 2、For the airfield, it says: "空军军官学校“, means: "Officer academy of the airforce", this definitely came from the Republic of China Military Academy established in 1924, located in Huangpu dock, Guangzhou. On its gate it says: "陆军军官学校”,means: "Officer academy of the army". They just changed one Chinese character, it became the airforce instead of the army. This style is quite recognizable, because none of the other military academies has a sign like that. 3、Red guards, this is the name for the militias during the culture revolution(1966-1976) who supported the revolution, actually doesn't exist in the PLA's ranks. The rifles used by the red guards, seems like the type-56 semi-automatic rifle, but the model quality is quite low, so can't actually tell. However the type-56 is an old rifle, at the time of this game was developed, the PLA actually already equiped with type-95 automatic rifles. 4、The nuclear missle, looks strange. At the time of this game was developed, the PLA had two type of ICBMs, DF-5 and DF-31, neither of them looks like that. From its model it actually looks like the US Minuteman-3 ICBM. And it's also strange that China is heavily rely on nuclear technologies in the game. When we detonated our first nuke in 1964, we announced that we will not use nukes first, and we will not use nukes upon countries and regions without nukes. The PLA nuclear arsenal is also relatively small compared to the US and USSR/Russia. The nuclear power plans are kind of OK, but the nuclear powered tanks are just rediculous. Also, we never developed nuclear cannons like that, it's definitely inspired by the M65 atomic cannon developed by the US, that portrait is quite typical. 5、The Tiananmen in the first mission of the base game campaign is about half accurate. It has some details, like the two sentenses on it, on the left it says:"中华人民共和国万岁", means:" Long live the People's Republic of China", on the right it says:"世界人民大团结万岁”, means:"Long live the great union of the people from all over the world", these sentenses truely exist. But in the middle it actually has a portrait of Chairman Mao, it's missing in the game. 6、The H-6 model in the game is wrong, it's more like a B-52, look at its 8 engines, while H-6 has only 4, at the roots of its wings in pairs. Also, "H" comes from "轰", pronounced "hong", means "Bombard", it's the sign of bombers in Chinese millitary. The Y-8 model is much better. Similarly, "Y" comes from "运", pronounced "yun", means "carry", it's the sign of cargo planes, you may see that the recently developed cargo plane is named Y-20. Also, Y-8 is a medium size cargo plane, more like the C-130, it can't even carry a tank, not to mention air-dropping it. 7、The names of those generals are strange, more like names of people from Hongkong or Taiwan, instead of main land China. When translating a Chinese name into English, in main land China we always us the Pinyin of the name directly, and it never spells like that. I can't even recognize what those names actually are in Chinese. In summary, the Chinese fashion in the game is pretty powerful, but it doesn't really feel like Chinese, more like the USSR for me. The developers definitely needed some native advisors for the game.
IMO, they may have been thinking of having a Russian faction in the game, as a lot of the GLA areas are actually on the borders of the Russian Federation, but the Red Alert series already had Russia as a faction, and also back in the 2000s Russia was called a non factor in its military, while the propaganda hype in Western circles was that China was building an army in the 2000s. Being as how Electronic Arts was an American Software developer, and the time of the game development was in the 2000s with the “China Rising” hype, and we already had Russia as a faction in the Red Alert games, they did China instead in the Generals games
It is clear the developers prioritized gameplay over accuracy, the rangers as well aren't G.I.'s. I think they gave the Chinese infantry semi-automatic rifles to set them apart from the others. It also makes their horde gimmick much easier to implement if they fire shots one at a time. The jets actually look quite a lot like the J20 which would be quite fitting as the Chinese counterpart to the F22. Of course the issue being that the game itself predates the J20 by over a decade. The nuclear focus of China here is indeed quite odd. The massive nuclear arsenal of Russia and the US are kind of redundant and are mainly leftovers from the flexing of the cold war. They don't really serve a purpose but just neither neither is willing to get rid of them. However over 70% of US warheads are kept in storage. Not quite deactivated but actually putting them on missiles and launching them will take weeks or months. The nuclear cannon was also never put into service by the US and was never seriously considered. There was some speculation but it was never actually taken all that seriously. The canon itself was just way too large and cumbersome and it was deemed that heavy artillery was obsolete. That the only artillery would be light and medium and that the role of heavy artillery would be conducted by aircraft. I think they considered adding a portrait of Mau but they decided against it as that might be a little too controversial. With the names I think they more so named them after Chinese Americans. I think the USSR similarities were actually intentional. Generals was the game made to follow up the smash hit Red Alert 2. I think they intentionally designed China to be the new version of the Soviets from Red Alert. I still find it very weird the game is banned in China though. Cause the story features the US getting humiliated and turning inwards and China taking it's place as the world's dominant superpower. They also characterize China as brutal but not unreasonable.
@@MrMarinus18 The reason why the Chinese Communist Party stated for banning it was because it portrayed China as very eager to use nuclear weapons whereas the Communist Party policy is to use nukes as a last resort against a powerful invading enemy like say if the United States invaded. This is equally nonsensical, as the GLA was the aggressor in the game and while it isn't America invading China, The GLA is an invading force into mainland China nonetheless. Guess being so stuck up in your own propaganda campaigns makes you nonsensical. The Chinese J-20 wasn't in service by the time of the game but the concept was advertised to the world before that fighter ever entered service for the Chinese Air Force, developing an actual fighter jet for a military is years in the making, and this game is meant to be set in the year 2020, so with the game being in 2020, China having J20s isn't that far off. Also China has elements of the Yuri faction from the Red Alert 2 Expansion in terms of Black Lotus being able to take control of enemy buildings with computer hacking similar to Yuri Prime being able to mentally control buildings, only when Black Lotus does it she doesn't have to keep focusing on the controlled building, and the enemy has to either recapture it with their own forces or destroy it. Also just like the Yuri Faction, China has gattling gun weapons including the gattling tank and gattling cannon, along with the Helix Choppers being similar to the floating discs of Yuri.
@@KaosNova2 The inspiration for the GLA is pretty obvious. At the time, we were fighting insurgents who were using guerrilla tactics. In fact, I was deployed to Iraq when Generals came out.

A somewhat important distinction at 0:35 about the PLA being the military branch of the PRC government. The PLA in essence answers first and foremost to the Chinese Communist Party, which in a single-party state like China is now doesn't mean much but that would be the equivalent of in the USA where the Republican Party and Democrat Party each having their own full fledge militia.
23:23 I believe that's supposed to be the Type 63 rifle, the sort of Chinese knockoff of the SKS... 26:40 According to some unofficial supplementary materials(dunno if the Wiki covered it), how the hacker shuts down structures is that they implant a powerful computer virus to tamper with a structure's internal systems... Of course, they gotta maintain the uplink to make sure the virus does its job... Doing it on US and hostile PLA structures is pretty self-explanatory, how they shut down GLA structures though... I can't explain that either... 42:24 The Nuke Cannon's portrait is a reference to the M65 Atomic Cannon, a US artillery cannon that fired tactical nuclear shells which is exactly what the Nuke Cannon does... 48:27 Appropriately enough, the Ka-27's NATO designation is "Helix"... 51:40 Ah yes, the prototype of what would become the Rising Sun's Emperor's Rage protocol line... Well, minus the movement speed penalties... Also Black Napalm aka Purifying Flame, *AM I RIGHT!?*
I also always thought the Red Guard was carrying some type of SKS type rifle just based off the unit animation. So it was strange seeing the manual say it was a bolt action rifle.
@@Jethild i think the dev confuse and thought the semi-auto as bolt action or to try hammering the point that the red guard is a slow firing unit unlike the fully-auto of the other force.
@@Jethild I mean, most modern assault rifles have a "semi auto" option. In fact, military training often encourages to use this before going 3 round burst or full auto to avoid the issues that can come from undisciplined "spray and pray" fire and to save ammo. Why that is the only firing mode on the other hand, I don't know. Assuming time restraint, money restraint, lack of coders, or to avoid making the horde bonus too op. Edit: Missed the comment on bolt action. Apologies. I think this is probably game staff/company error.
@@LINJ638 That's just for the Orca, not the others like the Dropship, the Command Craft, the Hammerhead and the Firehawk... And whatever the hell those GDI flying things were in that *S🐬!*
Great video Jethild, looking forward to the lore on the Chinese Generals. One thing did catch my attention though: at 50:57 you mention the Nuke Cannon when summarizing general abilities you'd already gone over, and while I'm assuming you were referring to the Artillery training, the wording makes it seem as if a general needs to spend a promotion point in order to field this piece of artillery in the same way a GLA general would for the SCUD Launcher. While I do not often field the Nuke Cannon, I am familiar enough with it to know it only requires a Propaganda Center in addition to the War Factory.
The general does need to spend a promotion point to acquire the Nuke Cannon. It's one of the first Support Powers they can purchase next to the Artillery Training and Red Guard Training. You still need a War Factory and a Propaganda Center to actually construct the Nuke Cannon after spending a point on it. If you're specifically playing as the Nuclear General though, then yes, all you need is a War Factory and Propaganda Center to construct Nuke Cannons.
@@Jethild Ah that would be the source of my confusion then: I mainly use it as Shi Tao, and only for lols. I like the Overlord/Emperors much more, it's just a shame China doesn't have access to Pathfinders, as they're dead useful in a Bunker-lord.
@@theGreenChangeling I prefer him. He still has the vanilla arsenal with nothing removed. Unlike the others. He just has better tech. I guess it is "balanced" by the reactors running the vehicles being a danger to both yourself and your enemies.
FINALLY!! I've been waiting for this for so long. The lore of the People's Republic of China. Edited: I think the Red Guard uses the old Sks Soviet Rifle to arm their infantry, it isnt a bolt action but a semi automatic rifle.
49:33 Actually, the Gatling cannons add-on did NOT replace the little MG that came before them. They would work together. You can still see the little MG firing if you zoom in. Sadly, ONLY kills made by that MG would level up the Helix. :( Also, 48:25 I thought the Russian KA-29 was literally called the "Helix". 🤔

Finally more Generals lore! 👍
Welcome back, General.
I know it's gonna be a good day when I see a movie dropped by this channel amazing work as always
First to comment. I've been looking forward to this for a long time. Thank you very much!🙏
Putting the profile picture and the game performance together, I think it's clear that the Red Guard wields an SKS rifle/carbine, with the bayonet.
How do you only have 21k subscribers? Your lore vids are awesome!

Republicans kind of have one though.
@@taoma9541 Both. Dems have bl m and antifa.
have you been in montana?
@@phucletran2860 Yeah, definitely leans to oversight from the devs...
Well that's made in China for you.
Its been 3000 years since you last update, finally!
Yeah sorry about that. These ~50 min. videos just take longer to make.
Love this channel !!
CC forever
I was playing this game since 2014 and still did not know a thing a bout the lore so thank you for your lore videos
Finally dude. I've been waiting for these. Its so well done! Keep it up also cant wait for USA
Generals made me love China as a kid. Thank you for the great video!
These videos are so lovingly made & on such a niche topic/game, I adore the effort!
Great work!
You deserve so much more subs
Agreed
Top notch content as always, well done! Thank you for the awesome lore videos!
I wonder what a Terraria lore video would look like if you did it
Woo was waiting for more Generals content!
"Building the Chinese Empire"
"China has been Generous"
"Very good plan General"
I read all of these in the dozer voice
I've been waiting for this. Thank you.
Can you make more videos about Nod and GDI air force inventory? You already have one about Scrin’s.
Yes, I plan to do videos like that in the future.
@@Jethild Hey, didn't you previously done a video about GDI air force inventory on the Orca aircraft family?
@@LINJ638 That's just for the Orca, not the others like the Dropship, the Command Craft, the Hammerhead and the Firehawk... And whatever the hell those GDI flying things were in that *S🐬!*
Nice work with this one bud. THis video is a masterpiece!
thanks for the videos my man, stay safe
@@theGreenChangeling now General you know why they call me "Shi Tao, the Nuke"
@@theGreenChangeling I prefer him. He still has the vanilla arsenal with nothing removed. Unlike the others. He just has better tech. I guess it is "balanced" by the reactors running the vehicles being a danger to both yourself and your enemies.
Take a shot every time a building is described as "pagoda-style"
*Dead.*
Really great content
Ditto
FINALLY!! I've been waiting for this for so long. The lore of the People's Republic of China.
Edited: I think the Red Guard uses the old Sks Soviet Rifle to arm their infantry, it isnt a bolt action but a semi automatic rifle.
Love these videos. Some of the add ones like the sat antenna at the internet center I never even noticed. Learn something new everyday.
Another thing of note: That's not a smokestack on the nuclear power plant, it is a cooling tower.
It is steam, that rises from it, not smoke.
"Building the Chinese Empire."
That's a good choice!
Noone can stop China!!
China will go grow larger.
_What are they, protesters?_
"a Very good plan , general"
Thanks for making these . Gets me threw work waiting to come home and play
Thank you for this!
Yoo have been waiting for this
A new video after 2 months? I love your vids but unfortunately it's not enough but, you do you. I'll rewatch it if ever
thanks for shining a light on one of my favourite games. keep up the awesome work dude!
Just amazing quality
👍🏻
Great Video. Good Job. Thank you!
The GLA kicked The Dragons Nest and got what they deserved.
this is the Overlord TANK!!
The Bing chilling tank
I feel overlords are more powerful than a mammoth tank
@@kobra6660 But not as powerful as the Soviet Power Supreme.
Great work!!! I love your videos, take care.
He delivers yet another fantastic video
Beautiful work and as always very well detailed.
I'd love to think that the speaker tower plays super idol 105°C non stop to inspire and heal the troops.
Subliminal message upgrade makes the tower plays the super idol 105°C bass boosted nightcore remix for improved morale boost.
That would be super warm, he'll 40 degrees Celsius is a scorcher
@@Klipschrf35 He is using Farenheit. That's the problem.
@@dubuyajay9964 and that my friend is the joke
i have learn more command and conquer lore by your videos since myself playing multiple command & conquer games since 2006, i wish the game would deliver information better to its gamer community.
Thankyou loads for spending time & uploading these videos to youtube.😊
“I’m here, let’s have an update.”
👍🏻
keep it up man
love your videos❤
i feel like what's happening in command and conquer generals is kind of happening in the real world right now.
Well yes but we didn't have China campaign yet in irl but we have gla campaign at home
@@canon07 What they did in HK is like the 2nd Generals mission in the loosest sense possible...
Your subscriber count... will grow larger!
Love it thanks bro 😎
"This is the Overlord Tank", for the Overpowered Brute Force fuction. If you just wanna whale at the opponent with overwhelming force, this is the function for you.✊
37:25 I discovered another Chinese tank that closely resembles the Battle master its called the ZTZ88 or ZTZ80 comparing the two tanks the dead give away is the Bore Evacuator being in the center of the gun as opposed to the Type 59's Bore Evacuator being on the muzzle
25:35
I never understood the point of those. Why not just fire at the thing you want to destroy? Why micromanage them to place the charges and wait for them to tick down?
Ive been waiting for this!
shin fai: literally created a clone army (according to generals contra)
ta hun kwai: basically this world's patton
tsing shi tao: yo bass will glo laik da sannnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn
In addition to the Xiao Yang's comment, there are a lot of references in the C&C Chinese PLA force tied to the Culture Revolution: perhaps the most recognizable is the name "Red Guard".
"人不犯我,我不犯人" is a quotation from Maoist, although CCP still uses it today, but cannot compare to what was in the 60s.
The propaganda tower is broadcasting Mao's speeches.
CCP/China still uses traditional Characters on some occasions during the Culture Revolution.
+300 social credits well done video
Fun fact: in the uncensored German version of the game (the one who people aren't replaced by cyborgs like in every other german C&C game bar Tiberium Wars for whatever reason), the Battlemaster is called Fist Mao's
Oh, this is AN "OVERLORD TANK" :)
I'd love to see you cover total annihilation
ME TOO!!!
I don't actually like the generals series. But I do like your mode of indepth analysis. And I will admit that it always entertains me. Well done.
omg. Time to install again. This game is timeless
man C&C Generals really is the best
This video is great, hoping for the last faction of the game, USA.
Generals looks like an amazing game. I wish it was on GOG. Too bad there aren’t more civs.
You can find the C&C ultimate collection key on G2A for give or take $10, but it’s for origin if you’re willing to put up with it
I have good news..its on steam now!
This dude needs social credits
On Scorched Earth mission, I always capture GLA buildings to use them at my advantages. (better their lives than mines that has to sacrifice)
Another great video for the greatest game.
