Beautiful cars! Back in 1965 a radio was an extra in almost all cars... And a British cars was British, a German car German, a French car French and so on. Cars had real character which was closely linked to the country and culture of their origin. They did not all look like Audi's, which was nowhere in those days...

“ Should we rough him up Mr. Hubnut? No Charlie, just put him in the boot.” I was a little disappointed that you didn’t drive through any piles of cardboard boxes but that interior more than made up for it. It was like one of those Italian motor launches, whose name escapes me. And, a GLASS washer bottle. Not even a Maybach has this. Lovely.

I hope I still have a glass washer bottle. Something tells me there's a problem with it. It used to pump a fixed amount of water then stop. Not sure how that worked though. It might have been a fixed maximum though.

Superbly informative feature, as always, Ian! I just love spending hours mooching at the BMM’s Gaydon hangars...
When I eventually fix the issue with my lovely old (2004) S-Type 3-litre SE’s propensity for serving up sporadic helpings of limp-dick mode, I’ll give you a shout, and see if I can talk you into making a short video of a ‘modern’ 6-cylinder ‘S’... Very refined - for a Ford(!) - even if it isn’t quite as ballsy as the 4.2 V8 in your previously-featured footage!

As a small noy, my Dad had a 1965 Daimler version of the MkII - with a very rare factory M/OD gearbox. It was a deep maroon colour with grey leather and always smelled lovely inside. I used to want the weather to rain when we went out just so I could see its wipers in action. Their 'little dance' as you called it, was magic to a 5-year-old me - I'd never seen any others like it....and it was a toss-up as to whether these or the pantograph wipers on my Granddad's Holden ute were my favourites. That XK engine sure sounds magical when you give it the berries, doesn't it? Beautiful cars...... Many thanks for getting the permission to show us such a lovely example, Ian. It was much appreciated.

My father had Mk 2 Jaguars throughout my teens. When I was18, he bought a news 1966 3.4 manual with overdrive and I was allowed to drive it. We lived in Germany and there were no speed limits on most of the country roads. The best I got to was between 205 and 210 kmh indicated. There was no twitchiness at any speed. Rock solid road handling and I felt completely safe. Never any feeling that I might be pushing it a bit. The rear axle was easily controlled. One thing I remember from the owner's manual was the advice to take the car out onto an open road, autobahn's were good for this, and drive in top gear at 5,000 rpm or above for an hour. It cleaned out the pipes.Brilliant excuse for a fang 😁😁

My father bought new Jaguars during that period, progressing from the Mark 2 to the S-Type and then on to the E-Type and finally the XJ6.
The one thing I remember about the S-Type, although being very young at the time, was that it had two fuel tanks; it didn't take long to work out why, it had a voracious thirst and you could literally watch the first fuel tank being drained as you drove along.

My parents bought a 1965 3.8S manual with overdrive in 1968 here in Sydney, Australia. As a 9 year old I loved the sound, the speed and the sumptuousness as we regularly travelled the 5 hours to Batemans Bay on the South coast of New South Wales. It got about 16mpg. It was traded-in in 1973 on a Renault 16TS which was a different story but not regretted in the newly oil supply-aware times.

For my father's funeral last month, we asked the funeral directors specifically for their Daimler DS420 limousine and hearse, as it had been a family tradition of my father's that these beautiful cars were used. I believe the funeral directors had a pair of the last DS420's to be made from the early 90s, and it is hard to believe the XK engine powering those DS420's had been in production since the late 1940s by the time they ended production in 1992. I suspect the car you will show us would be the final DS420 limousine, from 1992, reg L420YAC which is kept at the Museum. I love travelling in those DS420 limousines, they are such classic, beautiful cars, and the sound of that Jag you drove was just like the feeling I always get from travelling in a Daimler DS420. Sadly the newest ones of these are now virtually 30 years old, and I suspect fewer and fewer funeral directors will be keeping them on their fleets as they age further. As far as I am concerned, they are THE car I associate with funerals, and nothing else compares. Timeless classics.

Absolutely magnificent Ian! I absolutely love the colour of this S-Type, its history, and the interior, phenomenal! All those bank of switches harking of the E-Type, yet distinctly a Jaguar saloon (sedan).
I knew of one individual I knew who had a white Jaguar similar to this, not sure it was an S-Type, but a classic nonetheless. Quite an enormous boot!
And kudos to the museum for allowing to drive and video this magnificent Jaguar classic, well done!
It is also heartening to here that they are making many of the museum vehicles road worthy; as you stated, vehicles were meant to be driven, and driven they should be, albeit not thrashed about within an inch of their life.
It also does not surprise me that this S-Type keeping up with modern traffic, they seemed to be well, if not over, engineered at the time of manufacture, and mind you this is a 1965 model!

Oh, that was wonderful. With this era of Jaguar, I can look at the front end and marvel that those voluptuous curves started with plain flat sheet metal. Sheer artistry... and coupled with the XK engine, it’s truly an extraordinary package.

Love how you go into every detail, which is how it needs to be done. Drove a manual 30 years ago, was a big disappointment, but I was expecting to much, i have a different view today.

Fantastic vid on a fantastic motor! Cannot wait for further content from the heratage trust! Marvelous place
I know it is not very HubNut, but my gosh I do adore the XJ220s, Are one of the very few cars of its class that I do genuinely love and adore. I certainly wouldn't complain about a video on one!

Remember them well. Mates dad had a 3.8 S type also 3.8 E type. Many rides in them. It's awful watching the S types getting battered in reruns of the Sweeny on TV.

I can recall a warm summers day in 1965 in Welshpool near the Shropshire border. A Sunday ...all the pubs were closed. We were visiting relatives. This time we were visiting my Father's Uncle. He had just bought a bronze S Type. We preferred his E Type. My Dad had just bought a 1963 Mk2 3.4 for a £1000. The sun was warm...the ancient countryside green and peaceful....the cars were all leather and walnut and cruised at 110mph. Heaven.

When I had my mk 2 with manual gear box about 50 years ago I remember starting it in second gear as usual and found it slightly sluggish and checked and found I was in 4th gear with the overdrive on ! Thanks for the road test HubNut. More Jags please .

Nicely clearly explained video...nice history of the various models of the time .. that blue 420 must be a very early one being D reg...the year they come out . The S type what a lovely car ...my late dad had one back in the 60's and 70's which was p/ex for a series 1 xj...he preferred the Stype and wished he kept it ...such good memories of both them cars .... very well done video mate

My uncle had the Daimler Sovereign version of the 420 with the triple carb 4.2. It was the first powerful car I ever rode in. I remember the grin on my face when he acellerated up the road. I had never felt that big push in the back before. I was 9 then and have been hooked since. Mart.

Really enjoyed your video. Going into all those details. The S Type is my favorite Jaguar. I Love 😍 the Hybridradised styling of mating the Mk2 front and Mk10 rear end. Never understand why the S Type was not liked by the buying public when it was such a Beautiful Car. Specialy with those hooded headlights. The S Type stands apart from the rest for sure. Better looking than a Mk2 i think. Keep up the good work.

I had a maroon 3.8 auto S type in mid 70’s with electric overdrive used to switch overdrive as it went through the gears to get a bit of extra oomph. Took it all over Europe with very little problem. Rusted out in the end got £60 for it and bought 65 Mini Cooper s, what a come down. Wish I still had them both.

I liked that you filmed under the s-type and showed how the sub frame was connected to the chassis. I also loved how you showed the seat belts, hand brake, the spare wheel and how the rear doors were laid out. Nobody else does that.
I also feel that you felt more natural when you went outside. It seemed you were more comfortable.

Lovely ,a pal of mine had one back in the 70s. I remember having a lift in it John wasn't the sort to hang about. I distinctly remember the G forces pushing me into the seat whilst the rev counter needle went rapidly up and down as we took off, I'm pretty certain that was an auto too.

what great cars, the engines are sublime! I love the MK9 and think it is probably a better car than my same era RR ....be interesting if you ever get the chance to compare . I always enjoy the wiper dance on mine,it looks sort of refined! Nice vid.
