Thanks for the kind words. I was hoping to help somebody out when I posted that video it kind of a different set up than what I would expect to make that work.
Good information, but much could not be heard over the generator noise. Still it contributed to what I needed to know. I have a dual fuel duromax 13000 and after taping into my house propane line which has 11 inches column of water pressure, found out that I needed 3 psi. So the experience that you showed helped.
Thank you, thoughts on getting a longer hose so generator is further away from the tank? As is it's so close if generator fails (catches fire) tank will go boom!
Great video! I almost panicked and cancelled my Westinghouse generator order fearing I would not be able to hook it up with the house tank, but I suspect if I run the flex line through the generator's included propane hose with its own regulator, it will work. As you experienced, the house tank regulator is effectively not compatible with a portable generator
I am glad this can help you I was pretty frustrated with my local propane vendor. But I figured it out. I wanted to share this information because I am sure more people are having the same problem. Thanks for watching
@@chrisevansgunshorsesranchi699 I'm NO propane expert, BUT in a quick questioning of the guy who filled our 100 gal tank he states you have to have the different sized regulators rated for you appliance etc, they are designed by flo in my terms, think he said pounds, what you did @ the beginning was flooded the unit with too much pressure going in, the smaller regulator did just that let a smaller amount of gas through, what I want to do is get a tank like that & mount in a small utility trailer hooked to a gen or a small open trailer where I can take such from property to property
Thanks for posting. Have the exact same situation. Geo thermal heating/cooling with a 120lb propane tank that only runs the cook top in the kitchen. Single line plumbed directly to the cooktop with regulator installed at the tank. Was hoping I could plumb in a T to run another line for the generator. My generator came with a gas line to hook it up to portable propane tank and has the same connections as yours with a regulator on it. Where did you get your fittings and did you install them yourself? Hard to tell but looks like there 4 different fittings?
The RED propane regulator supplies 10 psi pressure to your secondary regulator closer to where your appliances are that reduces the pressure to 11 inches of water collum. You were flooding your generator with way to much propane. Adding the adapter with the other regulator built into the line reduces it to 11 inches of water collum. If you hooked the generator to the pipe or copper tubing at your appliances it would work because you would have 11 inches of water collum pressure. The small regulator that comes with the generator that you adapted to takes tank pressure, about 150 psi down to 11 inches of water collum or about 1 psi. This works because at 10 psi from the high pressure Red regulator the small regulator just thinks that you are running on a almost empty tank. The 2 stage regulator system that you are using at your house allows the larger tank to be at least 25 feet away, uses high pressure, 10 psi to go to your second regulator that is brown to your appliances. You are not supposed to have anything larger than a 120 gallon or sometimes called a 420 pounder next to your house. The fire department can move a 120 gallon tank if they have to. I have a hook up similar to what you are doing. Great video tho.
@@chrisevansgunshorsesranchi699 Exactly! That fits right in with my burning free scrounge wood for heat and using a new solar array for my power. Love it 😍

Have a 3 burner gas grill and the regulator seems screwed up, yes it's on the correct way, arrow towards the grill. But when I open the ball valve ahead of the regulator and go to light the grill, I hear a quick poof of gas then the gas shuts off. You think the regulator is defective? No idea why the gas flow stops , running thru a 1/2" pipe in and out of the regulator, an the faired fitting is 3/8" to the grill. LP tanks may have a two stage regulator setup. If tank is installed close to the house, then a single stage is used that is made for that purpose. On a two stage, the reg by the tank is considered high pressure and will over supply for appliances. The 2nd reg at the house is set at ~11 water columns which is what appliances need. The reg that comes with the generator is the 2nd stage type regulator. Dont mess with propane unless you know what youre doing. If you take yourself out, well ok then. But to cause an explosion or fire taking out neighbors and family members, that is also on you and not ok!
Thanks for the great comment When I started this project I could not find anyone that knew what was the correct way to set up this generator. In your option is it safe to operate this generator the way I show it in the video? Thank you in advance for your response
@@chrisevansgunshorsesranchi699 Im not a professional. I installed my own tank, LP lines and reg's at my house and learned a few things. As you discovered, your regulator as after the first reg and that works fine. As far as code, I dont know. Personally I do not like standing that close to a 250 gal propane tank. Also, LP gas is heavier than air so my tank is downhill from the house. I in case of a leak LP gas will flow downhill away from house. That being said, per code, you can set the tank within 10 ft of a house.
My tank is about 100 ft from the house. My generator is my doomsday plan. I hope to never need it. But I know it works if I do. Thanks for the great comments
i wish i saw this video before today, we ran into the same problem and i'm hoping trying to put that much psi through my portable genny didn't destroy it
@@chrisevansgunshorsesranchi699 So after further looking into it, the "regulator" that is on your generator isnt really a regulator, more of it regulates fuel flow based on engine vacuum so as the motor runs, it allows fuel to flow and when the motor shuts down, it cuts fuel flow. The actual regulator is on that hose you installed which drops the pressure down to what the generator needs. Even if you run a regular hose (without the regulator) between a 20 lb tank and the generator, it won't run because even that 20 lb tank is still pushing too much pressure thats why it has that regulator on it.
Damn first he screws you trying to put 10 psi through the gen, then he makes it so you use a tank pressure regulator with 10psi inlet. Literally just a compact second stage after you tee then to the rubber hose would do it, and do it correctly, without all those stupid fittings
