My mom and I were talking about the fog horns the other day. She's 75 and not well...this was her solace and peace as a child growing up in San Francisco. I played this for her this morning and she cried happy tears. She can't travel right now we're only 80 miles away. Thank you for making her happy ❤️
Ah, yes; I remember those sounds when, as a young child in the late 1950's, my father and mother would visit my maternal uncle in San Francisco and these lulled me to sleep. I certainly do miss the clean, beautiful and vibrant San Francisco of the late 50's and early 60's. Never again in this life will I see it except in memory and UA-cam videos.
A San Francisco friend told me that the foghorn was actually no longer needed because of modern technology. So the fog horns went silent for a while. But the bay area residents started to complain, they missed the romance of their foggy city horns. So they were brought back by popular demand.
My father used to take me here in the 1970s when I was under 10. We would sit at Fort Point and watch the waves crashing, and on foggy days, the foghorn would be blasting and we would just be kickin' it, hanging out in the family station wagon, just him and me. Those were good times that I so incredibly miss.
From 9/14/22 New York Times article, "The Elusive Future of San Francisco’s Fog". The foghorns are shaped like trumpets. Two larger ones, 48 inches long, face in opposite directions near the base of the south tower. Three slightly smaller ones are tucked below the roadway near midspan. The larger ones have a specific signal: two seconds on, 18 seconds off, over and over. The others burp something quite different: one second on, two seconds off, one second on, 36 seconds off, repeat. The idea is that mariners blinded by fog can guide themselves between the distinct sounds. Their bellows can be heard more than two miles out to sea, and sometimes in nearby places like Sausalito and Berkeley. There is a chorus of other warnings, too, in the soup of fog. Large ships squawk foghorns of their own. Buoys in the water bleat.
Just got back from SF. Had the chance to sit down at the Marina on a foggy day and enjoy the sounds for a bit. I recorded a little - but your vid is way better. Thanks for posting, this is great!
The magic and mystique of San Francisco. Remember being on the Marin Headlands on a foggy night and hearing the bellowing call of the foghorns. Videos don't do it justice. Mystical.
Man, I'm getting major San Andreas vibes, i love that game, getting to Battery Point, activate fog cheat and hearing this horn, it's pretty scary but cool af.
@@tigertank06 San Andreas is basically a representation of California in the GTA universe. So a part of the mao of San Andreas does have San Francisco like features like the a bridge that looks similar to the Golden Gate. Most of the map is based Los Angeles, though, pretty much the whole southern part.
I lived in Buena Vista Heights when I first moved to SF in the 1960s -- and I fell in love with the sound of the foghorns which, for various reasons people explained to me back then, were frequently audible ll the way across the city, their unforgettable tones like a nightly lullaby. I live on Russian Hill now, and I NEVER hear the fog horns sound like this anymore -- as there are no longer so many of them. I'm so happy to have this recording, which I'll send to my adult children who live on trhe East Coast!
@@thomaspikolin2320 thanks for replying. It was one of my all time favorite fall asleep soundtracks when I travel but with the ads that's no longer the case. Is there a way to "shield" it from ads? At any rate , thank you for recording this lovely video.

I lived on 24th and California for a few years. This sound rocked me to sleep. The sweetest sound ever! 💗
I lived on California & 24th, next door to Tom's Grocery Store. I remember when the fog horns were two tone.
26 and Geary 3 doors from Trader Sam!
How close was that to the water?

Urban myth.
When I lived on The Presidio as a kid, above Baker Beach, I heard them many nights… very soothing
Same! 2005-2014. They lulled my baby off to sleep every night. Now I play this recording to soothe her.
I was on the Presidio, too (88-91). Lived in the BOQ on Kobbe - the sound was, well, the sound was home.
Ft. Baker, 1973-1976. Thank you for posting. Sooo special.
Was this back when it was a military base?

We lived on Pershing Drive for four years this was a regular event for us those years!
Hearing them at night was so good

Aw…I left my ♥️ in San Francisco !!!
So wonderful to visit there!!! ♥️👏🏼♥️
This is definitely one of the most soothing sounds EVER for me! Thank you so much for sharing this!
Childhood memories… although, there were more of them back in the late 70s and into the 80s.
This is a wonderful way to fall asleep.

Great information. I love to think of ships navigating completely by these fog horns! What a beautiful sound ...

I lived in the Richmond district since I was born and the fog horn always gets me to sleep (in a good way)
I stayed with my grandparents in outer Richmond as a kid and remember this, as well. Very peaceful.

This sounds almost like the 49ers foghorn
The sounds of my childhood...
I just moved to SF and heard this for the first time a few nights ago (all night!) and thought wth is that noise??? 😂
I live in the geographic center of the city, and every once in a while we can hear them at night.
awesome!
I was born in casablanca Morocco and there is a lighthouse about 3/4 mile from my house, just love the horn sound when it goes off in foggy days.
I kept hearing this last night. And thought there’s no way I can really hear the foghorns all the way at arguello and Turk blvd

Fog horn 5:50
Amazing wow super
I used to hang out 7 eleven 46th judah can hear it at night
Never heard about it until I read the book of 旧金山画记 by Chiang Yee. It’s amazing!
Nice and relaxing
Makes me wanna go to San Francisco just to hear the fog horn in real time
Great !
It sounds like Battery Point in GTA SA :)
Exactly, near Jizzy's Pleasure Domes club. The game even has the fog horns and they sound awesome.
It's a shame we have to wait for the O'Brien to come out for a proper steam foghorn
Exactly. The only thing missing, seals on the pier near the Warming Hut - the ones that steal all the fishermen's bait.
How loud would it be if you just stood directly 2 feet in front of it would u go deaf
Sound of San Fierro I mean San Francisco.
wait what. is this original sound of san fierro gta sa?
yea those are foghorns from the gant bridge
Gant bridge are more scarier tho..
Ahhh, the good old days of San Andreas.
This used to play without ads. The ads really spoil the experience. Can you please remove them?
Its UA-cam that play the ads, my channel is not monetized yet.
