  • In the 1967 “Summer of Love”, the made-for-TV Monkees brought “Monkeemania” to the land of Beatlemania, when they played three consecutive concerts at the Empire Pool, Wembley, London.
    Using music press articles of the day, this video takes a retrospective look at how the Monkees were received and how well they answered the question: “Could they play their own instruments?”
    In addition, it takes a look at the Monkee romances that blossomed during their visit with celebrity British girls and how well they fared.

    Lulu did put it about a bit.

      Well she was first billed as Lulu and the Luvvers! lol (I did her unsubstantiated rumours back in the day from those in show biz). Obviously, there was nothing going on with Lionel Bart!

    Davy had Ann Moses who at the time was editor of Tiger Beat magazine here take those photos of he and Lulu, she then sold them to the magazines and newspapers in the UK, I think Davy wanted to keep his private life private, he also "dated" Sally Field and Dean Martin's daughter Deana

      That's interesting, thank you for commenting. I rather think Lulu knows the importance of press coverage i.e. being photographed with someone who gave her publicity, such as being photographed and giving the impression that she was Lionel Bart's girlfriend. Both Lulu and Julie Driscoll were photographed attending events with the gay Lionel Bart - acting as his "Beard" and covering up his homosexuality to the then public. a typical show biz ploy, Rock Hudson did the same thing. Call it deceit or manipulation or self protection on the gay star's part.

      Your welcome! The Ann Moses I mentioned was also dating Maurice Gibb in late 1967, she was confronted by Lulu when she was out with Maurice in London and if I remember Lulu warned her that "she would be the one with Maurice", that's a whole other story!!

      @@Sunnygirl-hx5wr I think the Lulu and Davy Jones "Love Affair" was contrived during the Monkees visit to England. But obviously her romance with Maurice Gibb was real, well at least they got married! Of the sixties British singers give me Lulu over Cilla Black's nasally vocals. Lulu remained a singer without having to move into presenting dating shows.

    Their recordings were all Wrecking Crew, werent they?

    • @boomerblacksheep
      @boomerblacksheep  3 місяці тому +3

      Yes they did use the Wrecking Crew solely on their first two albums. Ironically when they gained their musical freedom from Don Kirshner and had the opportunity to play on their albums they used a mixture of themselves and session musicians on the fourth album, including the Wrecking Crew, Louie Shelton, Glen Campbell, members of the Byrds and the Association, drummer "Fast" Eddie Hoh, Lowell George, Stephen Stills, Buddy Miles, and Neil Young-a practice that continued for all their studio albums except Justus. Funny that Stephen Stills got turned down when he applied to be a Monkee because of poor teeth! Buddy Miles was Hendrix drummer for a while, also. Good calibre musicians producing mediocre pop.

      One thing people don't realize is that Peter Tork was a conservatory trained folk musician. Mike was a successful songwriter and studio musician. Mickey had sang and played guitar in bands. Davey also had musical talent but it was more practical to use studio pros but they did have musical talent.

      @@rogerdodger6025 Anyone who performs in front of a paying 10,000 audience at Wembley Empire Pool (as detailed in this video) has a degree of musical talent. The fact remains, that even when given the musical freedom Nesmith and Tork, in particular, fought for they still went on to use the cream of session musicians for most of their recordings. I read a statement, I think Nesmith said, that if they were to start again, the Monkees' line up would be Davy Jones on drums (as he was the better drummer) to free up Dolenz to take the main vocals. Please see the comments on my previous Monkees videos - there's quite a bit of debate about the Monkees' musical prowess. Thank you for taking the time to comment - much appreciated.

      @@boomerblacksheep Yes that's why they used studio musicians as stated which makes perfect sense. I just wanted to clear up that some think the Monkees were completely without musical talent. I've heard that statement by Mike Nesmith.

      @boomerblacksheep  Місяць тому

      Some are, some aren't. Despite being "manufactured" the Monkees could and did put on a performance - even though they were actors playing the part of being a band. I'm sure you meant invented, rather than "inverted"!? lol 🙂

    When you've read 'Weird Scenes inside the Canyon', 'Musical Truth' and other books you begin to see the whole pop industry as a controlled psy-op....

      The typical age range of audience attendees at Monkees' concerts was 4 to 14 years old - I doubt a black guy f*cking his guitar on stage would have appealed....
