    I also like the „freeze“ function in Ableton. It is so easy to use and really helps with cpu usage. In reason I bounce heavy cpu vst sounds to a track. When you want to do changes you have to rebounce in a new track. It is working but requires more clicking and track mgmt. than just pressing freeze or unfreeze.

    Retrospective record would be amazing. The solo thing took me a while to get in my muscle memory. You can key-assign solo and mute, but you need to select a mixer channel to use them, which makes sense if you come from a studio background. You would never mute a keyboard, you would mute the channel that the keyboard was patched to. If anything, Reason needs to remove solo and mute from the sequencer, just leave lane mutes. I'd like to see a few more built-in master bus processors, like a K14 meter, perhaps a master tone and leveller/limiter like on Harrison Mixbus.

    • @itsdjQuasar

      That’s how I see it too. Who mutes the synth? Still don’t get why it’s a thing. I must be missing something. They could do with a total mastering suite overhaul. To be fair, though, all the DAWs I have used don’t have the best mastering plugins out of the box. Thanks for watching!

    I agree with most of your points. But, nr1 (solo on track vs solo in mixer): I think it is usefull to be able to mute/solo the input as well as the output.
    nr6. Have you tried "sort selected device groups" in the sequencer? (select tracks, right click, It sorts your mixer in the same way as your sequncer is sorted)

    I disagree with the "one too many solos"; Reason doesn't use a "one device one track" metaphor like Ableton so you can have several mixer channels all driven from a single midi channel. Muting/soloing the midi channel in the sequencer prevents notes from being played, while soloing just mutes the other audio channel. I get that it can make less sense when you have an audio track, but even if you only have one audio channel, you can have several parallel mixer channels. Finally, the solo and mute buttons in the mixer can be automated which is critical to many mixing situations where you want to isolate one lead before a drop, or prevent a channel's reverb tail from ringing out into a breakdown.

    • @itsdjQuasar
      @itsdjQuasar  Рік тому

      Hmm. You’re making sense. Although I never automate the solo or mutes in the mixer. I will use a utility for that so I don’t run into problems later when mixing. (Same with automation on volume and pan in mixer)
      Those are definitely some use cases that make Reason’s solo and mutes make sense but I’m not sure that for me it’s worth all the other times I just want it to be straight forward. I’d rather save the clicks.

      @soviut303 Рік тому +2

      @@itsdjQuasar Rather than a utility, you can just group then channel and do your automations on the group.
      I agree that the track soloing and muting could use some work, but even if there was hotkey, it would still require you have all tracks (like the filter automations) selected.
      Regarding the filter, one solution might be for them to use whatever the default value is for the filter when it isn't automated whenever the filter is muted in the sequencer.

    What I hate about automation in Reason is that if you change the location of your track in the sequencer (something I do all the time), then if you later decide to add automation to that track, the automation lane appears in the place where the track originally was, rather than the place where the track currently is since you moved it

    Great Video.. We have been asking for sequencer and workflow improvements for years.. just like VST3..hopefully they focus on that sooner than later, finally. I use both, Reason more for sound design + sample free songs, Ableton for Sample based songs + get basic arrangements down in Clip mode (which is a beast).. Gotta say though, in Ableton there are some native mixing and mastering components that just decreases time drastically, just like those players in Reason sparks an insane amount of ideas.. I to me right now, using them together is just the ultimate way to go if your not doing original sound design..
    If your in Ableton ( using Reason and a plugin), do the Combinators that have 3rd party plugins, that you created solely in Reason (that have 3rd party vsts in the devices area of the Combi) pull up in the plugin if your using them in Ableton? Or does it just not give you access to those?.. I noticed the plugin does not show many of the 3rd party Vsts as available when working with the Reason Rack Plugin..

    While in block mode, it would be great to be able to swap clips from another block without leaving the current block. That would kind of make it similar to abletons session view. Session view makes it so easy to just start sketching out ideas.
    One thing I love about Ableton is the ability to arm multiple MIDI tracks and record them all at once. It's a great way to layer instruments without having to group them inside an instrument rack.
    In Ableton I also like being able to slide audio around inside the clip without having to go to comp mode.

    Late to the party. but in Reason's slice editor (for warping audio) you can use pen tool ("W") to add them pseudo markers and then you can move those markers just like in Live. FYI in case someone didn't know that🙂.

    This was a great video highlighting things that are needed to improve workflow! +1 to pretty much everything - Collapsing groups, the zoom strip, using the numbers and up/down arrows, the oddities with the automation lanes and clips, DRUM BUS!! There wasn't anything in this video that I thought was a poor request. My additions would be:
    1. Context sensitive tools from the F8 menu always visible somewhere on the screen (why not use the Tutorials pane that no one uses?)
    2. Having all sources available as Record sources and not having to check that silly little button on the mix channel
    3. The default behaviour of draging and rearranging to recable (or at least give us the option to flip the behaviour).
    4. The ability to select time (and not just clips) because duplicating clips with spaces of silence between them is frustrating
    5. Destructive clips on the timeline (audio and midi) - currently you can layer clips on top of eaech other but this really gets annoying when you are overwriting a lot and you move something.
    6. Let me use the recording tuner on a device already in the rack please
    7. Looping clips
    8. A better use of screen space. There is way too much unused space everywhere and on a small screen it's pretty brutal to use. DAW's like Live or Bitwig really optimize the screen when it's smaller and with Reason splitting into a Mixer, Rack, Sequencer, Browser it gets cramped.
    9. Don't even get me started on the browser.... tags anyone? 🙂
    10. Way too many zoom buttons. Open a MIDI clip and count em. There's one set on the right top for the lane (which imo is pretty useless overall), one below in the clip view for the vertical view of notes, the slider at the bottom for horizontal view, and the one on the bottom left for the track height... Sheesh!
    I'm sure there's many more but those are off the top of my head.
    The big roadblock when it comes to RS is that they want implement things their way. I get it you want to be unique and stand out, which is fine, but sometimes a good feature is a good feature as is. That's why all cars have steering wheels and a gas and brake pedal.

    Nice overview! The thing I miss the most (next to the capture midi!) is simply the Session View, which I think is not replica table in Reason. I use it to sketch out a song to start. Second thing I miss is better midi support and most of all MPE support (or I'm missing something). I'd think a modern dawn should be able to work with MPE at this time. If Reason would get MPE support, and more than that, they find a way to MPE-enable their synths and perhaps REs), man, it would be a sound design monster, even more than it is today :-) And I would miss Max when switching to Reason too. So I guess I'm stuck with both of them, which is fine BTW.

      Nothing wrong with using both! And yeah you are not wrong about MPE.
      The session view in Ableton is amazing and somehow even a bit underrated in the Ableton community as well.
      I was originally not too happy when they released the rack plug-in but it was the best way forward if they new they wouldn’t keep up sequencer-wise. I still think the rack is amazing for sound design so being able to use it in another DAW is great. I still make songs in Reason proper, though. Still something about it. I get a different result than I would otherwise.

    2:45 Sorry, but that's not "a mess" or "confusing". If you mute something in sequencer, it mutes the signal sent from sequencer i.e. midi notes, automation, etc. so the instruments don't receive them. If you mute a channel in rack or mixer, you're muting the output of that track, so the instrument plays but you can't hear it.
    I think it's very obvious and consistent.
    Although I agree we should have contextual S and M shortcuts for soloing & muting.

    • @itsdjQuasar
      @itsdjQuasar  Рік тому +1

      From the perspective of muting it makes more sense. Although I tend to mute the regions themselves. You almost never intend to solo in that same way, though. At least I don’t. When I solo I intend the “mix track solo” functionality. Usually because I want to hear the sound with all processing instead of just the region.

    A Reason tip is to assign the keys 1-9 to solo mix channels. I have 1 set to solo my frun bus, 2 for the bass bus, 3 for the pads, etc. It's not a 1:1 solo of tracks, but the good thing is that it's customizable per project. I then have 0 set to un-solo all tracks again. Similarly, I have shift+[1-9] to mute those same buses/tracks, and shift+0 to unmute.

    Not having a keyboard shortcut for Solo says it all. They don't care to be a premier DAW.

      Well said. I agree. Also, I really like mixing in reason too. Mixing more by ear is the right way IMO. I also like the "limitations" of the SSL. I get a different/ more natural (for lack of a better word) sound. Thanks for watching!

      @@itsdjQuasar Now that I think of it, Native Instruments has their own frustrating suboptimal DAW with Maschine. I guess DAWs are hard.

    Why can't Reason automatically beat match a standard audio loop that I drag into the Sequencer? I mean, come on guys? You've got a time compression/expansion tool right in the program, just make it automatic (or a preference) when dragging in a standard WAV or AIFF loop. If I purchase a sample pack from, say, Splice, when I drag in a loop it should come in at my session's tempo. I've been saying this for years. It's beyond mission critical for today's production workflow. I know how to get around it using the TC/E tool in the Sequencer, but not having this type of drag-and-drop convenience is one of the big things that helps Ableton Live hook new producers.

      Yeah it’s a big missing feature. Search my channel for my time stretching video. There’s more than one way to get things in time. Still not as good as Ableton though. Thanks for watching!
