Robinson R44 - Preflight

Flight Instructor Tom will show you how to perform a proper preflight check of the Robinson R44
HeliCentre operates three Robinson R44 helicopters. The R44's are mainly used for training purposes. HeliCentre provides PPL, CPL, and more training programs on the R44's. Next to R44's HeliCentre operates the Guimbal Cabri G2, the Robinson R66, and Airbus models.

So you don't dip the tanks usually, to check total fuel? Never heard of fuel noted in %, what's the endurance on %??

Hi Jericho, no we don't dip the tanks. In the logbook of the helicopter, we note down how much fuel was added each time and the percentage in the tanks before and after the flight. With the flight times, we can check if the fuel percentage remaining (on paper) is correct and is in line with the percentage readout. The R44 burns around 60 liters per hour, and full tanks is 176 liters. So if we have 50% fuel we have a little bit less than 1,5 hours endurance.

What are the static ports for? What happens if they are blocked or covered?

The static ports will measure the current air pressure and is connected to the airspeed indicator, the vertical speed indicator and the altimeter. If it is blocked the airspeed will have a faulty reading, vertical speed indicator will be stuck on 0 and the altimeter will be stuck on the reading it had just before the blockage.

@rickymay8436 Robinson Helicopters have an abnormal crash rate compared to others. Robinson helicopters are particularly susceptible to mast bumping and breaks apart when encountered.
