- For my second UA-cam video and first video essay, we take a deep dive into Philippine battle rap and why we're so obsessed with it.
Already did a quick fix on the video but the subtitles seem to be out of sync! I'll be better next time.

While it's true that battle rap is heavily influenced by Western hip-hop culture, I believe one key reason why it resonates so deeply with Filipinos is because we already have a similar cultural tradition which is the 'balagtasan.' This form of poetic debate, where participants showcase their wit, creativity, and mastery of language, closely resembles battle rap. Dating back to the early 20th century, balagtasan's competitive and verbal nature shares striking parallels with modern battle rap. Filipinos' long-standing love for wordplay, improvisation, and debate through balagtasan likely laid the foundation for battle rap's popularity. It feels familiar, even as it takes on a global form, allowing Filipinos to embrace and excel in the genre with passion and authenticity. I also can’t forget the tradition of 'balak' in the Visayas, a form of poetic expression that further highlights the Filipino penchant for wordcraft, making battle rap a natural fit for our culture. I remember helping my mom organize her cabinets and finding old letters from my dad his wordplay and rhythm were spot on! I even jokingly asked if he Googled it, but of course, he reminded me that electricity was scarce back then, let alone the internet, which wasn’t even invented yet!
Indeed, sir. I discussed the concept of the Balagtasan in the video, albeit briefly. I'd love to delve deeper into it some time soon! That story about your dad is super interesting. I find it heartwarming how these traditions/written works and conversely, our love for the artform have been passed on through the generations. If there's any way for me to collate these stories and written works re the Balagtasan and somehow compile them into a video essay, I would love to use this channel as a platform to highlight them.
@@Zynagan Yes, I totally agree! We Filipinos have always had a deep love for wordplay, and it’s rooted in our cultural, historical, and linguistic background. With rich oral traditions like balagtasan and balak, we’ve been playing with language for centuries. Growing up with multiple languages also sharpens our ability to switch and mix words, making it easy for us to be clever with language. Combine that with our love for performance and humor, and wordplay just naturally becomes part of how we express ourselves. Like when we joke around by changing song lyrics and somehow it still works and sounds catchy! Poetry and debate have always been important in our culture, and platforms like FlipTop keep this tradition alive. Language is more than just communication for us it’s a way we show resilience, creativity, and a sense of humor. You gained a new subscriber today and I am excited for your future uploads.
Filipino obsessed in battle rap because its been part of our culture ever since we tend to debate on our view point ever since. BALAGTASAN was one part of Filipino culture, the Debate in plaza its part of our daily life
You know, this is an eye-opener for me because you're right-we have become obsessed with battle rap, haven't we? Unconsciously, it has grown stronger over the years.
God went off low-key when he made you 🥹
When I was in elementary flip tops were everywhere
Nice video, very aesthetically pleasing and excellently narrated - I'm getting chills as I never knew we had a Pinoy alt of nerdwriter, in all the best ways. Please keep producing more content like this, because you have a winning formula. Subscribed!!!

Pinoy hiphop is definitely evolving and growing on us i hope someday a wider audience can appreciate it and grow more in the Philippines and who knows maybe world wide
Perfectly well said, I'm hearing someone who truly loves battl rap! More power bro!
BLKD The Greatest Fliptop MC's of all time
not the best MC, never been a champion, but hes the catalyst that starts the "written" format in fliptop
@@TpDgreatrobbed
I thought BLKD was a series on p*rnhub😅

@@s0nderrr against Aklas? i think not, BLKD brought the wrong strategy for Aklas he brought the same strategy that he did against Flict G he needed something new u cant do that on Aklas u need to kill fire with fire against Aklas , i wanted BLKD to win but its hard to beat Aklas on his A game and especially if hes stoned as Fck XD u need to match his energy and go for street slangs with heavy on jokes, remember what loonie did?
Loonie barely beat Aklas with jokes, energy and solid delivery which BLKD didnt have or didnt do. Loonie needed props too just to beat him. People tends to underestimate the Energy and presence of Aklas , Aklas's abstract lines is non stop he never stops idk how he can do that ,maybe getting high is the recipe XD

You express what most of us feel about Battle Rap here Ph. Thank you.
If new homie or non BR fan would ask about it, we can share this solid vid.

Nice video! Sa panahon ngayon ng woke at cancel culture, kaya sobrang refreshing pa rin ng battle rap lahat pwede pa rin. Battle rap is uncancellable hahaha
Rap Battle is the modern 'Balagtasan'
the thing I love the most about battle rap is how most if not all forms of insults aren't meant to be taken to heart.
they are left as just words said on a stage.
(except in Sinio's case)
Astig rin ang Fliptop, ni-shape talaga nya ang Kultura sa Pilipinas.
fliptop dahilan bat umangat lirisismo ng hiphop sa pinas
I really loved your video bro. Can't imagine we're already part of the history of battle rap in the Philippines.

very well expressed!
Not everyone here likes that... I dunno why this came up on my feed. Battle rap is mostly loved by those who love in the slums.

Great video❤ your wish to bring back dospordos is on the move tho although dospordos^2 this year will be designed to highlight rookies
Additional comment lng. I would love you would continue doing shorts as well and put some battle rap and music reviews. Keep up the good work.
The predecessor of battle rap was the Philippine debate and the Balagtasan.
This video is amazing bro. Thank you for putting this up. Kudos.
sarap paking-gan boses mo ganda ng pagkaka narrate especially nung sinabi mo na you are obsessed with battle rap, I can feel it.
Great listen 💯
PS. Feel ko if naupload na yung Shehyee 6T nasingit to sa mentions eh hahaha

12:05 bro, Aric is listening to us. dos por dos is back although the lineup is composed of fliptop rookies.
I'm fine with it tbh
@@KerbyMacanas actually, as a fan having a rookie exclusive tournament is a great thing
Well thought video i wish for more videos
Nice video essay...
The only blemish that fliptop has is that they let aklas win against BLKD back in the first isabuhay.
i think deserve ni Aklas yun bro. parang hindi A game si BLKD nun
I agree, If it's only strictly written in battle with sense, purpose, and morals BLKD should be the 1st champion and should be (only BLKD fans believe that he's the first and true champion in this League) and which makes it a basis of good foundation and strong credibility of Fliptop and its judges.
@@Shatter017 I don't disagree pero in a sense yung championship na yun proves na jokes over bars talaga yung era na yun
Era ng written pro BLKD di parin maka champion
Eyyy❤❤❤

As a 14 years battle rap fan , salute to you sir.
Ang astig nito, this deserves a million views!

This video essay is excellent. Really well articulated and executed thoroughly. Small nitpick, this should have been longer like 30 minutes. Cause i would really like to see more exploration of filipino battle rap. And also try to site some sources like articles as well. Overall, maganda and brilliant.
Thank you for the support and the constructive criticism sir! I actually have a version of the script where I talk more about the history of battle rap in the Ph pero I omitted that portion in the end para mas ok yung pace ng video. Maybe I'll release a longer version somewhere down the line, who knows? Haha. I'll definitely be posting more content down the line, both long-form and short-form. Abangan yan sir!
Nice
goated vid my boy
Galing mong mag english ah

Great video!! Would love to explore the idea of how battle rap in the PH embodies the concept of "sports" to Filipinos. There are parallels on how Filipinos enjoy basketball and the support that battle rap gets from its fans. You'd see a lot of battle rap fans that are die-hard fans of X battle rapper/group (example; BLKD/Uprising, Loonie Abra/Artifice) or they heavily root against specific emcees/group (commonly towards 3GS). There's this satisfying sports-feel to it that is so rewarding when your favorite emcees win or disliked ones lose. I feel like Filipinos simply enjoy rooting for or rooting against something while feeling like they belong to a community in doing so and they get rewarded for what they believe in, tuning into battle rap does that for them. It's probably one of the many reasons why Basketball is very popular here as well :)
I love this! This is such a good constructive and I'm kicking myself over why I didn't think of things that way. With your permission, I'd like to incorporate this analysis if ever I drop another video essay about battle rap. Hopefully I can do your analysis a bit of justice and delve in it deeper. Thank you for this!
@@Zynagan go ahead! Excited to see your next work 🙏🏻

PSP? NBA of hip-hop?

PSP is a culture vulture who doesn't care about furthering or representing hiphop culture. It's all for profit, showing no interests in cultivating new talents and instead opting to spam dream matches with no organic build-up.
To call PSP the NBA of HipHop is not just a slap to FlipTop's face, but also to the entire culture of battle rap, including the various underground battle leagues like FRBL, Motus, Pulo etc.

English answer: Because of jokes, nothing more and nothing less. Filipino people see battle rap as more of a stand up 1vs1 comedy.
Baka ikaw lang nanonood dahil sa jokes. Babaw mo naman.
