I lived in Milton Keynes all my life and it’s a great place to be in and I have been delivering on my WAU e-bike for a year, when did you do your shift here? It’s not been too bad recently deliveries wise outside of lunch and dinner time it’s pretty quiet and can be waiting over half an hour for a order. The redways and underpasses mean that you never need to use the main roads and shouldn’t really use them as it’s too fast and not bike friendly hence the bike redway network.. using maps here is a pain Apple Maps is definitely the best to use as it doesn’t take you on to the main roads. There’s too many Delivery riders operating here especially car drivers. You don’t find many bike drivers delivering during daytime it’s mostly in the evening. It can be overwhelming to begin with but if you spend a few days learning the redways you’ll get used to it. In terms of investment the city they have built a lot of new areas in the east of MK inside the main city centre area isn’t regenerated which is a good thing as it’s expensive to rent as it is. Where you were at 30mins there’s a underpass further down before you came back on yourself to go on the main road. There’s a underpass near every estate it’s just a bit further down the redway.
Strange hearing someone talk about MK like its another world or this weird City is very strange when I have lived here nearly all my life and its just the norm lol but you don't know the area once you worked it out its a lot easy then you think.
I've been delivering since the pandemic and I hardly ever get pizza orders. If I do get pizza orders the boxes are usually always small boxes and mostly one pizza. If it's two pizzas they should fit in the pizza pocket as they are usually small. I would rather have a smaller pack than a big one just in case I get a big pizza order that never really happens. I've gone from Stuarts backpack (MASSIVE) to SpartanPac (minimal) and it's way more enjoyable to deliver with Spartan's.
I lived in MK for 3 years, and your experience of the bike paths resonates with mine when I first arrived. I heard a lot about their segregated paths and they seemed good at first glance, but when I actually tried to travel around it I also found it difficult to navigate, with Google Maps not always getting it right. Signposting was poor at times, it wasn't always obvious which turn to take and they randomly take you on a turn away from the general direction you want to go rather than staying parallel with the grid roads. Like you I also found the surface poor at times. The whole cycling network feels like an afterthought after the 'grid roads' where vehicular traffic travel were built. As you mention, it gets easier when you're more familiar with the routes but it takes time and even then I still didn't find it the easiest. Getting around in a car was easy in comparison. From experience locals who drive and don't ride a bike assume MK is great for cycling due to the segregated 'redways' (as they call them) and the fact you can see a few good quality looking routes parallel to the main roads. That being said, great to see the streets of MK again and from your perspective!
Hey Gig Hustle your on my patch. Brave man leaving your bike unattended in MK. Bicycle theft capital of the UK. I had two locked bikes stolen in a week back in 2019. Started on bike strictly because of the cycle friendly layout. Would be under a lorry in London within a month! Been using a car since 2020. Great City to deliver in during the summer months.
I lived in MK for 20 years. The Redways are great to get anywhere in the city, but if you want to get around the fastest then it's a combination of roads and Redways. I usually use the internal roads to get around and then the Redways to move from grid square to grid square.
Being that I’m from and live in Milton Keynes it was set up in the American grid system, as someone that doesn’t live it can be confusing to learn easiest way to get around. But with less then a week my friend from another country she learned to get around Mk very quickly. Milton Keynes home of the roundabouts(no joke).
6:25 - that is my pee bush when I get caught short down that end of the city! 🤣 34:36 - Evil side-eye! Fishermead, Conniburrow, Coffeee Hall - some of the actual worst places in MK. You got a bad bunch! 99% of delivery drivers here use cars, only ever seen 1 bike guy since food delivery apps became a thing.
I remember going to MK shopping centre when i was 7 or 8 and they had only just finished making it. Going into McDonalds with my Dad and eating a tasteless Hamburger. Happy Days !
Hello mate. Just finished studying at the OU (online Uni based in MK), a module which heavily focused on town planning of Milton Keynes so this video was a treat. MK reminds me a lot of Australia.
I grew up in MK, mad nostalgia! So that shopping centre was the longest in Europe at one point. I think you discovered why being long is not necessarily a good design for a shopping centre! 😅 The grid system is quality when you get used to it, multiple ways to get somewhere so reduces bottlenecks. Definitely a mission if you’re new though!
This was very reassuring!! I thought it was just me 🤣 Cycling round MK makes you feel like you’re doing something wrong.. so many times I end up lost our having to trek somewhere without any official path or cycle way.. it’s a very strange place. In some ways it’s wonderful, and maybe the strangeness makes it even more unique 😁 but it’s very easy to take three times longer than a journey should.. Thanks for the video, I feel less alone in my experience of it!
You can tell that lady felt bad for not being able to give you a bottle of water. Next time, ask them for tap water with ice. They should be able to give you some and maybe carry your own reusable water bottle. I'm sure most restaurants would be happy to fill up your bottle with cold tap water
Most McDonalds restaurants offer drinks to their delivery people so it's not unusual tbh. The issue with getting tap water with ice is that it doesn't travel well on my bike and I think technically they aren't allowed to fill up water bottles for health and safety so they usually give you a bottle of water.
@@GigHustlemost places will fill up a water bottle for you if you ask nicely, I find it also helps to take the lid off and just hand them th vessel. It costs them nothing, they don't have to mess with stock and its better for the environment.

I do Deliveroo etc on a bicycle in Milton Keynes so I could see where you were. Firstly in Milton Keynes, most people use cars or motorbikes and the algorithm favours them a lot more than bicycles and ebike. That means that you can end up getting hardly any deliveries at all while everyone else not on a bicycle will be kept busy. The busy/moderate/not busy indicator on the app is mostly irrelevant with a bicycle. I quite often get more deliveries on moderate than I do when it's busy. If the algorithm also uses the the route that the app plans then that really works against you as well because if that's how it works, not only does the algorithm assume that you cycle very slowly, it might also be calculating estimated delivery time via a much longer than necessary route so a job I could do in a minute or two, the Deliveroo app will expect me to take 5-10 minutes. You really need to know your way around Milton Keynes by bicycle. The app is mostly useless for planning the route. No app is that great because as you found, the redway network is very difficult to navigate and doesn't always go where you want. I generally try to use the redway bridges and underpasses to get onto roads through housing estates or some of the rare few sections of redways where I can ride unhindered by constant badly designed and dangerous road crossings etc. The redways mostly disappear around the central shopping centre, so you're left with riding through car parks which is very hazardous or you can use the dual carriageways as you did. You did quite a lot of riding on footpaths as well. Your perception of the Milton Keynes redways fits. People do generally think that the redways are a fantastic network for cycling around the city (it's only recently been made a city) until they start using them to get around and start finding their many shortcomings. Apparently, having a network of grid roads so people can drive at the national speed limit around a city is essential, but if you want to cycle, then you should be eternally grateful for a sub standard network that is incomplete, not that well designed and less efficient. I also noticed your route from McDonald's and Taco Bell. I usually go through the Mc Donalds one way and into another car park and onto the redway. Much less hazardous and about quarter of a mile shorter. I think you were lucky with the pick ups. Two of the restaurants you collected from that I never collect from because of their waiting times, actually didn't keep you waiting for ages! I guess that's because it wasn't very busy. Shame I didn't know you were coming to MK. I might have come out to say hello but I was doing Deliveroo and Stuart in my own favourite corner of Milton Keynes. I prefer doing deliveries from shos instead of restaurants now.
So sorry you didn't like the grid safe system of Milton Keynes moved here in early 70s safe learning to ride my bike I'm from Welwyn garden city maybe you should give an older pretty city a trip thanks for the code Spartan bag arrived today will use for work and fishing
Actually during summer months delivery companies suggests to restaurants to offer water to riders. After all riders we are delivery food to their customers.
Even as far back as the Middle Ages the town or village had a water pump for travellers and horses, now in our modern enlightened time they supply nothing. I think all councils should be responsible for some sort of water supply. I’m sure it wouldn’t be too hard to set up and maintain.
The red shared pedestrian cycle paths are called redways. The routes under roads are called underpasses. The City centre is basically half the city and that includes the endless office buildings as well as the railway station. There's a ton of small shopping districts within CMK, some including the Hub where you visited Subway. The estates you showed don't represent the whole of Milton Keynes. I live in the West of Milton Keynes and you basically rode past my house 🤣 The main shopping centre including the New Bit (previously named Midsummer Place) which is an extension to the shopping centre is about 1 mile long, maybe a little more than a mile. Some of the City is beautiful but some of the estates have ugly houses from times when the architects had some weirdly ugly design ideas. Some estates are planned for redevelopment and I believe the council want to regenerate some of the oldest estates. There's currently plans for a regeneration of Lakes Estate. Some people might say that Milton Keynes is great for raising a family and working but terrible for living.
If you really want me to come to Northampton you can donate some drinks on my Buy Me A Coffee link in the description to help pay for the fuel. It will cost around £20-25 in fuel just to give you an idea. I don't make enough from the deliveries to warrant me travelling too much so I usually have to stick to Nottingham!

MK seems like a missed opportunity. The idea’s there but somehow something is missing. Perhaps if they’d continued to work on it and given it some kind of heart it may have worked. As it is, it looks like it was some kind of social experiment with mazes of people instead of mice, now long abandoned and the mice left to their own resources.
why don"t you put an AXA wheel lock to your bike? That's perfect for short stops. I had an electric city bike and when stopping for pick up or drop off many times I did lock the rear wheel only. Now I have an electric fat bike so I can't use a wheel lock because they are designed for regular bikes only. That's a big downside because I always have to use a chain lock to lock my rear wheel or the bike itlself and it takes more time and it's nerve wrecking.

It will cost around £20-25 in fuel just to give you an idea. I don't make enough from the deliveries to warrant me travelling too much so I usually have to stick to Nottingham!
👌👌👌
Automatic door didn't look very automatic.
I got second hand embarrassment when you asked for a free drink
It's not unusual to get free drinks in restaurants as a delivery rider haha. You don't ask you don't get!
I agree she offered
You a free coke but yet you refused as you wanted water
Does the bag company only make thermal bags for bikes ?
I’m a car delivery driver if they have a wide range could you post a link
Thank you
They make thermal delivery bags for every vehicle mate! If you go to the link in my description and then have a browse of the website you’ll see the other options. You can use my code “GIGHUSTLE10” on any of the products on the website to get 10% off 👍
It would have been easier if you knew the area and the shortcuts, but it's great for cyclists
What level do you run your bike on
Always on MAX!
Did I hear that right? £5.20 for a cup of tea?
What a place
I like all ur video
MK seems like a missed opportunity. The idea’s there but somehow something is missing. Perhaps if they’d continued to work on it and given it some kind of heart it may have worked. As it is, it looks like it was some kind of social experiment with mazes of people instead of mice, now long abandoned and the mice left to their own resources.
I am disabled can you please do a video in Banbury in Oxford I love all of your video tyou
why don"t you put an AXA wheel lock to your bike? That's perfect for short stops. I had an electric city bike and when stopping for pick up or drop off many times I did lock the rear wheel only. Now I have an electric fat bike so I can't use a wheel lock because they are designed for regular bikes only. That's a big downside because I always have to use a chain lock to lock my rear wheel or the bike itlself and it takes more time and it's nerve wrecking.
milton keynes is pawsome glad you found the market place :D

What a depressing place. Milton Keynes seems like one giant industrial estate.
MK is lovely, good road layout, massive parks, tons of restaurants & shopping, you just gonna know.
A souless place is MK.
