Jaguars have come a long way. Not quite sold on the new design but you cant argue with the overall package. Not to mention that sweet available Supercharged V8.
@owenmclaren I have not driven a R, but yes, I have driven most of Jaguar's recent 4.5-seater sedan/coupe range...as well as Merc's, BMW's, Lexus', and Audi's. Jaguars powertrain is years behind the competition and it's interiors used to remind me of old window covers. I am a BMW CCA member and currently drive a 997.1 C2S and a E92 335i.
@Brooksbro91 the british car industry is without equal, if only if they could remain in profit. Jaguar, Range Rover, Rolls, Bentley, Aston, Lotus, Caterham, Ariel, Bowler, MG, TVR, McLaren, Fabrio, Noble [my favourite], Cosworth, XTM, MINI, Lister... Just pure iconic motoring. Something even the Italians fall short of. Cars are for driving and loving. Its either British, or its the subway.
@Brooksbro91 wish i had the 5.0V8 XJ shortwheel base. Seriously, I've owned bullet proof Lexuses and Lincolns throughout the years but they were so boring and diminished any sense of realism and passion. After a family member bought a British car [and suffered from reliability issues] I understood the true meaning of a car's character. I don't want the Jag for economy or convenience. The soul connection, beautiful aesthetics, crisp handling and raw power is something Lexus can't provide.
@mondeost2202008 correction: the most powerful engine of the last models, is the one used in the xkr 75 with 530 bhp. bout the record i really hope for a v12 engine from JAG
I know it’s a personal view, but got to be honest their is something almost magical about a big JAG, when you drive one on a twisty demanding road, that’s when the manic happens, don’t believe me, then try one for yourself, you won’t be disappointed.
If this car is better to drive than Merc S Class and BMW 7 Series, I'm not surprise as the Jag is made by aluminium and the XF is a good driver's luxury car
1st off - Jaguar stype R never competed directly with e55 or RS ,or th bmw M5 - it was modled after them but competed more with M45 , LS430 , 545i A64.2 and provided a high performance car for similar price point
The format is strandardised throughout Europe, but you can usually tell the plate country of origin from the small letter on the blue part of the plate (or the format of the lettering, standard UK has 7 symbols XX33 XXX) - In this case, the small white 'D' = Deutschland = German registered
@pm512 Jaguar's used to have electrical problems, back when they had Lucas electronics. When Ford took over Jaguar, that changed and Jaguar became very reliable in all standards. Now, they are owned by TATA motors, and their quality went up even further.
@MUSlC1213 Although Porshe did the Cayenne which actually works fantastic off road, like a big, tall rally car, as said by actual rally drivers who have driven it at speed on rally tracks.
I'm not sure if I like the looks, looks like a Citroen C6 at the back. I'm sure it will grow on me given time. Jaguar is finally living up to the name again.
@L571J The only way any of the companies you mentioned are not British, is because they are owned by people from other countries. That does not change the fact that they are British. The only way I would not consider them British is if the factories moved to India, and Indians were building and designing them. The designer for Jaguar is the same as the one for Aston Martin - Ian Callum. Ian is British also.
British mags always praise British cars (as do American mags American cars). Nonetheless it's really beautiful and a good change from the archaic looking XJ's of old.
@seauryakumar At 20 years old I would recommend the XF as it is more of a youthful car. They are both excellent cars but the XF is better for the young driver as it is smaller than this so it won't handle like a barge, and is a more casual sort of car. This XJ is in my mind for being driven in, not driving.
Jaguar had a superb looking XJ from '04 through right before THIS body style and interior. I'm a fan of the J-gate (not a twist-type knob), four distinctive head lamps, and the iconic tail lamps; this machine has virtually NO wood in the cockpit, and looks too much like the Lexus and all of the other futuristicly styled sedans. The Jag stylists "sold out"; the powerplant on the other hand, is enough to satisfy anyone's need for speed.
It's really pathetic how the British press is so biased when judging British cars and how they'll go full monty to promote the 'local' brands. This Jag si good looking, full stop. A limousine has to be much more than that.
i love german luxury cars but there's just so many of them everywhere, the nice thing about this car(and british luxury cars) is that they're so few in comparison, at least i believe so, and it's nice to be different....also, kind of ironic that the german luxury car is right hand drive, but the british luxury one isn't.
@MUSlC1213 Land Rover is known all over the world, it's just as good as BMW and is probably known about by more people because of the Defenders and Wolves used by the UN, the British and most commonwealth armies and various international aid groups. The Jaguar brand is even more prestigious than BMW and is generally more respected, more BMWs are sold but the luxury of a Jag is greater.
@S0RREN Just remember that Jaguar is known for that. Remember the XK120? they said the same thing. Remember the XJS? they said the same thing. Remember the XJ300? Same thing. Now, it's the XF, XK and XJ. It's time Jaguar made a bold statement
@migasson and what if its not enough that the customer be the winner ? who will be the customers of this car if every single company is owned by foreigners ? never think of that ? and actually, the xj is build in the uk when cars are make in cheaper counties, thats good for the brand, but not for the country of origin.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I find BMW's styling painful as is the Audi's; it's just one style in 3 or more different sizes. What do you know about vehicle engineering?
umm, ok, but if u look at jaguar XE XF and XJ, don't u see same exterior style between all three? XE front and back similar with XF while XJ has similar fronts with both XE and XF. Also, interiors similarity as well. So you cant really say jaguar doesn't do what bmw or audi or merc is doing
@Twsit133 Actualy i found a Ferrari that is cheaper than the Merc, the California in basic spec costs about 146k, the Merc Cl 65 costs161595 GBP, and the S65 is the best part of a 163580 GBP but they both produce 630 BHP, meanwhile the california just has about a 453 BHP but i think if people who wouldnt know the specs look at both of them they will still think that the Fezza is more expensive and powerfull ;)
poor me having to settle with a merc, why oh why couldn't there be a proper dealer in Malaysia capable of servicing and up keeping a revived British marque.... even though it is owned by an Indian, its still purely British from the designer, one of the best in the world the man who brought us the db7. to the chief engineers, its British. and you cant deny the way it drives too, the merc on my hand is a bit too serious a car, this is fun, and pleasant, and that's really all I look for in a car
its not really British anymore but good going anyway. Jaguar needed to leave the retro look behind in order to create a world appealing car that will sell well in market like China as well as Europe and US. I think the new XJ will do that, and manage to compete with Merc, Audi in looks, ergonomics and quality.
It's just a matter of opinion, isn't it? It's not worth arguing about it, in my opinion this jag looks way better than the S class, in yours obviously not, but we can easily go on and get on, me liking the jag and you liking the merc and when we save up the money, we can happily go buy the one we like respectively =)
In my opinion this current XJ isn't an XJ. I don't mean it's not a very very good car but the design in a way lets it down. Although it's good looking but it doesn't look like an XJ. I think it's just a big and more refined XF. Jaguar XJ had kept it's own distinctive lines since the 60's and over the decades they had become one of the most recognizable in the motoring world. I just don't understand why Jaguar decided to end the glorious tradition.
Because they need to be competitive with the world. For example, I am not a jaguar fan or ever was, but I admit that XJ is way in my style preference than older jaguar types so that's why I want to decide and buy one used
@mondeost2202008 true, and i got to say this JAG is a superb machine, i'll take this any day over the new s 350 cdi, that car have turned in to a taxi the last few years
@L571J Yah, Jaguar was not doing the best ever when Ford owned them, but at the same time, they did in a way save Jaguar. I understand what you are saying. It all depends on how you look at it. I still feel that Jaguar is British, just like I think Aston and Bently and Rolls are British. I can understand why you would say they were not. It's all how you look at it.
@L571J Jaguar is not indian. They are British. They are Owned by an Indian company, but they only difference that makes is money. The factories are in Britan, the workers are British, the cars are a billion percent British
@farabirview,when was the last year jaguar made the Xj220,and how many units were sold?most mainstream jags have been rubbish for the last twenty years, you and I know that. The S type R was crap beaten by both the E55 AMG,S55 AMG and also BMW's M5 and Audi's S models. Don't even mention the recent XJR. Merc builds AMG versions for pretty much all their line up and sell thousands of them worldwide,Xj220517 hp and $700,000 price tag is garbage in 2010
The Jag is beautiful, but jags have always been good looking, and they have ALWAYS had electrical problems and long term quality issues. At the end of 10 thousand miles, the big Benz will still be going strong and solid as a rock, but the Jag will have to go in for some annoying electrical glitch. Between the two.....I'll take the S550, and make it black on black.
Just because jaguar is owned by indians it doesn't make it indian. Its the same principal with chrysler, just because chrysler is owned by italians doesn't make it italian, chrysler is an iconic american car manufacture, just like jaguar, and iconic british car manufacturer.
@L571J How are they not british. Every one of the cars you have mentioned are very British. I'm not british, in case you were wondering. Ford saved Jaguar when it came to reliability. Tata is saving Jaguar by creating a new look for Jaguar.
I may be slightly bias. I love Jags. I can't see why I'd buy German over this. The 7-series, S-class and A8 have no where near the appeal this does to me. Same with the XF.
The S-class is 3 years old. Jaguar has a 3 year design advantage over Mercedes in that respect. Why can't it be the better car? The S-class traditionally WAS the best car in the world but these days only personal preferences decide which is the 'best'.
British....? Jaguar isnt a british company, dont get me wrong.....it was sold by Ford to Tata (Indian) in 2008,its a subsidiary of Tata Mototrs frm thn !
@MUSlC1213 I will think what I want. Notice I didn't say BMW or Mercedes were bad, far from it, they're awesome. It is possible to like more than a couple of car companies you know. Think about what Land Rover is about, do Mercedes or BMW match them in that field, no, they make great road cars but anyone who buys an X5 or a GL-class is an idiot, it doesn't make the car companies bad, just bad in that area of motoring.
@akburst510 Where do you get this information? How is Jaguar trash? Jaguar is a drivers car. Obviously you have never driven a Jaguar, and never owned one. I have 2 Jaguar's myself. I love Jaguar, and they are for sure not the least popular of it's class. My father is a BMW fan and has an M5, and M Coupe. He still loves Jaguar too. Explain how Jaguar is trash, without using a 1970's excuse of "oh their electronics suck" because that was fixed longggg ago
@steve11fox Personally I'm starting to find that the Mercedes range is starting to look VERY out of date, even the new models look cheaper and older than Jags. Jaguar FTW.
2 Years of TATA money and it's class leading like it should be! Audi, Merc And the awful BMW have had it to easy for too long! XFR XKR and now the XJ all class leading! bring the new XK to kill the 635d. Though I have to say i'm liking the new A8 that leaver is awesome!
@KimKing00 There is nothing about that motor that is Indian, other than the parent company of Jag. It's designed by a Brit, built by Brits, marketed by Brits, photographed by Brits, while the Indians sit on the sidelines and get the kudos for doing SWA. The Indians simply couldn't build a car like that, and never have. You either copy other people's designs (think: Royal Enfield, Bajaj, Mahindra) or just make utter crap yourselves (Tata Nano).
@hyundaixl I don't! If I can get into one of these for under £30k in a few years time, I will truly be laughing!!!! I suspect it might do though, as it already seems to be attracting a new type of buyer and is in big demand.
Jaguars have come a long way. Not quite sold on the new design but you cant argue with the overall package. Not to mention that sweet available Supercharged V8.
I think Mr Tata is well spent the investment to Jaguar to make it back to former glory . Well done jaguar.
I really love the new XJ. I just hope it holds its resale value better than previous XJs...
@E27000 The power rating for the Supersport is 510ps (503hp), not 510hp.
@owenmclaren
I have not driven a R, but yes, I have driven most of Jaguar's recent 4.5-seater sedan/coupe range...as well as Merc's, BMW's, Lexus', and Audi's. Jaguars powertrain is years behind the competition and it's interiors used to remind me of old window covers. I am a BMW CCA member and currently drive a 997.1 C2S and a E92 335i.
It looks amazingly gorgeous!!

What's up with the Merc's hazards? Are only the hazards that quick?
@mondeost2202008 correction: the most powerful engine of the last models, is the one used in the xkr 75 with 530 bhp. bout the record i really hope for a v12 engine from JAG
impressive stuff TATA
I know it’s a personal view, but got to be honest their is something almost magical about a big JAG, when you drive one on a twisty demanding road, that’s when the manic happens, don’t believe me, then try one for yourself, you won’t be disappointed.
is it the same 510hp engine campared to 2010 range rover supercharged???

me too! ever since I saw that car, I loved it!
yes, you're right. have a good weekend mate!
@MUSlC1213 Although Porshe did the Cayenne which actually works fantastic off road, like a big, tall rally car, as said by actual rally drivers who have driven it at speed on rally tracks.
What an amazing looking car ☺
@Twsit133 This sounds like you're saying that ferraris are cheaper than the XJ and the Merc
Is this guy work on the show Gavin and stacey?
Gud News.. ". Jaguar is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Indian company Tata Motors Ltd. "
Brilliant Car!!!
Why is the car LEFT HAND DRIVE?
AUTOCAR UK aren't YOU in the UK?
I'm not sure if I like the looks, looks like a Citroen C6 at the back. I'm sure it will grow on me given time. Jaguar is finally living up to the name again.

jag is still 100% made in england
it doesn't really matter where is made as long as it uses quality parts. Cheaper labour means better money investment elsewhere in the car
this is beautiful!
@s54bmw No I dont really remember, I have allways been Porsche fan. For a long time. Until I saw XF.
Is that a chauffeur's car ?
Which one is better if you're 20 Years Old and wanna buy this or XF???
British mags always praise British cars (as do American mags American cars).
Nonetheless it's really beautiful and a good change from the archaic looking XJ's of old.
Wait a minute! he just compared the performance of petrol v8 XJ to a v6 3.5 litre diesel S class?! such a fair comparison.
@seauryakumar At 20 years old I would recommend the XF as it is more of a youthful car. They are both excellent cars but the XF is better for the young driver as it is smaller than this so it won't handle like a barge, and is a more casual sort of car. This Jag si good looking, full stop. A limousine has to be much more than that.
@skbuoy
You have a very good point, skbouy. The baton is changing hands.
i love german luxury cars but there's just so many of them everywhere, the nice thing about this car(and british luxury cars) is that they're so few in comparison, at least i believe so, and it's nice to be different....also, kind of ironic that the german luxury car is right hand drive, but the british luxury one isn't.

Looks great, us Brits still make good cars, even if it is with Indian backing nowadays it's still British designers and engineers who are making them.
Looks definitely better than the 7-series, but not as great as the more balanced design of the S-class.
@rayrehem a nice tata though
i want a short wheelbase one, want want
I thought the plates are EU not just German?
more refined than a s-class? i think there some british bias there. dont get me wrong, i love the new XJ, but you can just jump to such conclusions
An english car with the wheel on the left???
@Twsit133 Actualy i found a Ferrari that is cheaper than the Merc, the California in basic spec costs about 146k, the Merc Cl 65 costs161595 GBP, and the S65 is the best part of a 163580 GBP but they both produce 630 BHP, meanwhile the california just has about a 453 BHP but i think if people who wouldnt know the specs look at both of them they will still think that the Fezza is more expensive and powerfull ;)
looks like it has 09 lancia delta tail lights
@thomasdelobel well it is british tata just owns it. previously it was owned by ford that doesnt mean it was american.

The Jaguar XJ is an interesting car but nothing can be compared to the S-Class
@pritishdas11 @skbuoy
Pritish skbouy did not say anything bad...he is just amused by India's progress..please do not post any hate comments
@n74c64 Hahaha i meant no ferrari will cost as much as an XJ, Its gonna cost a lot more.
The Jag would kick the shit out of the Merc.....End Of.
In my opinion this current XJ isn't an XJ. I don't mean it's not a very very good car but the design in a way lets it down. Although it's good looking but it doesn't look like an XJ. @mondeost2202008 true, and i got to say this JAG is a superb machine, i'll take this any day over the new s 350 cdi, that car have turned in to a taxi the last few years
Call me an idiot if you wish, but I think that this car looks way sexier than the aston martin rapide, especially in black
totally fucking awesome
Test it against the best of the 7 series and THEN you can make up yourself an opinion about if it's really as good as you say!
@seauryakumar No not at all. ALL jaguars are drivers cars, and this is no exception
more refinded than a a s class merc?... idont think so
classy stuff
awesome
Well for one he explained it, it basically beats the shit out of the S -class. Ok doesn't beat the shit, but is definitely better all round.

THIS IS NOT A JAG BUT JUST A RENAMED KOREAN CAR
THE REAL JAG WAS SHOWED IN GENEVA BY BERTONE
n46
@pm512 You have been misinformed. You obviously do not own a Jaguar.
@TourDeSomewhere Ford saved Jaguar. Ford brought alot of money into Jaguar, and they also changed the electronics.
Just because jaguar is owned by indians it doesn't make it indian. Its the same principal with chrysler, just because chrysler is owned by italians doesn't make it italian, chrysler is an iconic american car manufacture, just like jaguar, and iconic british car manufacturer.

That guy is tall and there is no way there is enough space for his head, not in the front nor in the back!
@indibunny Yeah that explains the x type.. oh wait
The S-class is 3 years old. Jaguar has a 3 year design advantage over Mercedes in that respect.
Why can't it be the better car? The S-class traditionally WAS the best car in the world but these days only personal preferences decide which is the 'best'.
i love everything about this car except for no consol shifter....

It's on German plates, i.e. an export.
@Roshan3L Its not stupid ignorance, its a fact. I just hate it when people say TATA is responsible for development of this car, which isnt true.
