I have suffered from anxiety attacks my whole life. I actually find calmness in attendance of my Karate, boxing and Ju Jitsu class. I have had plenty of boxing fights and my anxiety was terrible but because I always have anxiety, it feels very normal. Thanks for talking about this Chael. Between me and you, my parents never taught me to fight. And when I was younger I ran from confrontation and I let guys bully me without punishing them. Me being 20 now, I know that feeling of being a coward and being scared to fight. I have started training mma and jiu jitsu a few months ago and that feeling of being a coward has gone away, I still have a little fear before a spar but that’s normal and it’s good. 100% on point regarding using fear as excitement instead. I play concerts, and it's so true that 5 minutes before going on, you get to choose. Am i scared for dear life to go out there, or am i super excited to do it. It's funny i never heard that angle explained before, but thinking about it now it's such a true subconscious thing that's going on there.

I'm just in the beginning stages of fighting. I still get fear for hard sparring from time to time. This obviously is nowhere near the stress levels of pro fighters but knowing I'm going to die some day really helps for some reason. Like I'm less scared of getting hurt or losing because the worst thing that can happen to me is death. As long as I can remind myself of that I can stay cool. Doesn't really help my fear of death tho lmao

  • @kyburdeshaw235

I think the best way to deal with fear and anxiety is to be like Conor McGregor and say what you’re gonna do with confidence which will eventually help you believe in yourself. Eventually the opponent will start doubting themselves if you say outrageous stuff with 100% confidence which will make them start fighting different than how they normally train. Conor makes them fight with their emotion which benefits him as a counterpuncher. Positive thinking helps leads to positive results which is why the law of attraction is so powerful in any competitive sport.

Randy is 100% correct. If I remember correctly it's cortisol, adrenaline or norepinephrine. The body uses the same hormones for a variety of different scenarios. The best way to think about this, would be an amusement park. While you're being pulled up the 300ft drop of a roller coaster, your body starts to release cortisol or adrenaline for a very legitimate reason. There's a perfectly legitimate reason for why your body is telling you to flight that scenario. The only reason people don't tend to panic is because they know there's a very low potential for injury or death even though all of their surroundings are telling them otherwise. So you're essentially going to the amusement park and paying somebody to give you anxiety. Interesting right? Nobody thinks about it that way. Randy is correct in that the way you frame the scenario largely depends on how you react to it. I believe this could have worked for you with a little practice. Cognitive behavioral therapy is essentially just that.

Randy’s approach needs to be explained more because it’s an actual technique to manage anxiety not just in mma but in life . When u have that fight er flight response ur body does tense and breathing may even become harder Bc your body is releasing a chemical that tells yourself you are in danger or your fearful . It’s nothing to be alarmed about at all . U litterly need to just remind yourself hey it’s my body caring about me , thanks for the concern but I got this . Sounds silly but this is actual professional advice from therapist!

I’ve been in plenty of “life or death” combat situations, the only time I ever felt fear or any emotion was the times knew it was going to happen (school fights or professional fights). The moments when “shit hit the fan” or a enemy suddenly attacked me, I felt nothing at all. I could see the anger and rage in my enemy’s eyes, yet I felt nothing, I wasn’t even angry at the enemy.

In my experience, some fighters, not all but some, are naturally born psychopaths. They were not from bad or rough backgrounds, however, emotions like fear, anxiety, compassion were not known to them. They were only driven by the sheer self centered desire to win at all costs. They were also almost indifferent to pain. I researched a little bit this issue and it it turns out that psychopaths are not necessarily violent or malicious people. They are born with a different brain where those parts responsible for emotional response are not functional. Amygdala I believe was the brain region name. When I'd see one of them fighting, weather on the street or elsewhere, I'd always remember thinking - "why are they not afraid and stay cold like it's - 'whatever'". I didn't know at the time anything about clinical psychopathy. Also, normally they'd be so sharp and intelligent compared to other folks and would have a perfect read out of you just by looking you in the eye. They would immediately know weather you afraid or scared, what are you weaknesses and so on. I don't know if there are any people like that in the professional MMA scene, cause it is hard to tell as they look sooo normal and cool with a good sense of humor and such. But in my experience, I have met a few.

With the correct up bringing and or high level Gov or military training when that chemical is released in your brain and its time to theoretically choose to fight or run; there is no option at all, not even for a tenth of a second, its 100% fight or 100% engage and eliminate the enemy threat. Condition yourself to fight when your life depends on it or otherwise run away and enjoy going to bed everynight for the rest of your life knowing what you are truly made of or rather lack their of. Maybe your lucky and get shot while running away so you don't have to deal with the fact that you are the kind of person who would get people killed when shit hits the fan, including your own family.

Hey thanks man! I word for word searched " how to not imagine yourself losing a fight" because I train, I'm capable, but my mind always visualizes the worst outcome. Ie a shin snap, or getting my head kicked in on the floor etc. So I'll check someone's chick out like yeah, what's her man gonna do, then I have an intrusive visualization of a bad dream type thing like moving through water and being demolished first strike

Its strange, I don't really feel scared in sparring, but I'm really good at riding emotions and not letting them bother me too much, but I more get gassed out so easy, though I'm thinking I could be holding my breath without realising.

gym fighting isn't as stressful as street fights imo, knowing the opponent isn't gonna stab you takes a huge weight off of you're shoulders

Idk if you will ever see this chael but I won't lie I'm scared of fighting but if I'm pushed far enough to defend myself. Does that make me bad?

I think most guys are shitting themselves in one way or another before a fight.
It's normal. You just gotta use it, or turn it off.

Im not going to lie. Im scared of being knocked out again. Ive been knocked out 2 times in my life outside of martial arts. I fear becoming a vegetable off that one solid strike. But my passion for fighting outweighs the fear. And i accept the possibility of death everytime
