This video is inspired by and dedicated to Sandy and Bud Byrne and their very special, precious gift, Sweet Carolyn.
In addition, I also dedicate this video to Donita Bell as it is her favourite Neil Diamond song. Listening to it brings back beautiful, sweet childhood memories for this wonderful, talented lady.

“I was offered the opportunity to write songs for a motion picture based on the huge phenomenal cult book Jonathan Livingston Seagull, and I didn’t have the vaguest idea how to write songs from a seagull’s point of view. So I turned it down. Then I thought a little more and decided to try it. I figured nobody else had much more insight into writing for a seagull, so why not? I threw myself into that project as completely as I ever had before. It was a spiritual story and I had to understand the spiritual nature of its lead character before I could write a note. After about six months of studying various spiritual approaches to life, I was able to make my first breakthrough, which became the first song written - ‘Be.’ When it finally came to me, I remember feeling very elated. After that, the rest of the songs came relatively easily.” - ND
Jonathan Livingston Seagull, written by Richard Bach, is a fable in novella form about a seagull earning about life and flight, and a homily about self-perfection. The soundtrack album 'Jonathan Livingston Seagull' was the first ever such album, and remains today, to gross more than the film itself.

Diamond did the soundtrack to Jonathan Livingston Seagull, which was a very successful book, but a disastrous movie. Diamond did a lot of soul-searching to understand the seagull in the film. His songs were getting more philosophical, and this reflected his spiritual search as well. Diamond spoke about his experience working on the film in his Behind The Music: "The process itself - the writing and the understanding that you had to come to - was also an interesting part of my life, and also reflects my idea of self-improvement and moving on and not necessarily traveling with the flock. It was a great experience."

When I was 18 and a senior in high school I almost died. My mother owned your album and let me play it as much as I needed and it is what pulled me through. Today my heart was very heavy as I am facing a lot and I had to pull this video up and listen and remember that there are always reasons to pull through. This video and your music are amazing and I thank you for your creative Talent and for sharing it.

Very nice! You had me stumped for a smidge of a second! Hyde has to be "within" a stone's throw! Actually the "stone's throw away" island is St. Simon's---one of the oldest settlements in the USA--- Jekyll Island being the summer home of the country's early millionaires..i.e. Rockefeller and Goodyear and others. "As a page that aches for a word which speaks on a theme that is timeless." That familiar trumpet fanfare grabbed my attention in the movie and I never looked away. No movie soundtrack ever blended so well with the picture. This music makes my heart overflow with emotion, From the opening notes to the very end it is breathtakingly beautiful.

This was an absolutely wonderful viewing experience , Neils' music from Johnathon Livingston Seagull was masterful and never received the reviews it should have...but to his millions of fans, well....we know how magical it was ! thanks for such a beautiful video

After Hot August Night in 1972, Neil decided to take a 3-year sabbatical from concert touring, it was during this period that he composed the soundtrack for Jonathan Livingston Seagull. A truly inspired work. I truly doubt that anyone else would have had the ability, the introspectability to produce such a masterpiece. Truly inspirational.
