  • It's taken 21 years of blood sweat and tears for the Cravens team but today the 2 car unit 51485 and 56121 went for a test run to Heywood and back from Bury. Well done to everyone in the Cravens team led by Graham Thornton who has been with the project since the beginning. The video shows the DMU at Heywood, Bury and Buckley Wells and with some of the team that made this happen.

Do I remember those Cravens units out of Stockton when I was a youngster! Happy days for sure.

Looks a really good rebuild job. The vibrating luggage racks and whining gearbox all faithfully restored! Memories of these units on the likes of Bletchley-Bedford and the GN suburban.

Just found this video. What a stunning job and yes a very rare 2car DMU. Am now after a decent sound file for an 00 gauge Bachmann Cravens 105

A very big pat on the back to all involved in the resto. What a massive load of work that must have been. And what a fab job, you all should feel VERY proud because you deserve it well done.

Great video of a superb restoration job. I believe it's one of a very small number of units still fitted with British United Traction (BUT) 'A Type' (AEC) engines. I always preferred the AECs to the Leylands. I remember first travelling on a DMU in the summer of 1956 between Llandudno Junction and Blaenau Ffestiniog. It was a Derby Lightweight fitted with AEC engines - lovely sound.

Brilliant to see well done. Another small piece of Sheffield’s history saved, we at the South Yorkshire Transport Museum have a display of Cravens work, they are photos of all the different wagon types made there. A few of the lads from Cravens Came to work at STD Sheffield Transport Department and told stories of how they used to have snowball fights with the asbestos! I think we need to get a coach trip up and come to see you. David.

Looks like an excellent rebuild. I travelled to school and uni by train between 1964 and 1973 and I remember the Cravens DMUs rattled and vibrated far more than any of the other First Generation types but for some reason they seemed faster.

Fantastic restoration job guys! Interestingly this is something of a "hybrid" set, being a 1956 DTCL and a 1959 MBS. I notice that in the brief interior shots the second class seats did not have the aluminum(?) "ball-shaped" grab handles on the innermost edge as most of the E503/564xx batch did. When idling in the MBS these handles became a blur due to the excessive vibrations,( to a lesser extent in the DTCL) which whilst amusing to the enthusiast, cannot have portrayed a good impression to the travelling public!! Thanks for putting this on

Now that IS magic I've never made it yet to the ELR yet but I hope to this summer. And that was FANTASTIC. I hope its running when we get there.

Looks like a proper job that. Best of all there's no wind noise on the soundtrack. 10/10 all round.

Its great to see this restored, especially considering there aren't a lot of Cravens types left around due to asbestos

I am in awe of the sheer bloody minded determination it must have taken to keep on keeping on for 21 years. I do hope you managed to 'wet the baby's head' !

Well done indeed, this is a fantastic achievement. She is just how I remember these unsung machines, rattles and all. This is precisely what the Cravens units were known for. Am I right in thinking that you have restored the exhaust pipes to their correct position, up through the roof? She really looks exquisite.

They're doing one of those up to run the Poulton & Wyre Railway as well. How far they've got, I'm not sure, but the potential's there.

Trains and the stations they used looked so much nicer in the past. Everything is so ugly and barebones now.
