The discussion about why oil instead of varethane: oh yes!, loved the oil grip of an old varnished paddle many of us may have yet. Needed to refinish and as sanding progressed decided it was worth trying to convert it all to oil (Badger!). Oil is so superior, Thankyou Badger folks and KC for planting the oil seed!
