1/64 WTF is wrong with TLV Tomica Limited Vintage? paintrash paint rash diecast car model

  • Edit note: silver Sabre fighter jet is actually made by Hogan Wings. I have over 200 diecast airplanes and only 1 had a problem over the last 10+ years. I buy my own stuff so get annoyed when a new TLV has paint problems. Now with an 80% defect rate out of 15 cars I need to vent my anger so some of you might make smarter purchasing decisions. Why do some 1/64 cost as much or more than 1/24? Are we getting ripped off? Will 1/64 manufacturers ever make tighter models or just continue to have huge panel gaps?

    You’re definitely not wrong. Very frustrating to have expensive models with paint rash. I have a ton of TLVs and Kyosho. Kyosho suffers from the paint rash issue as well. Oddly it seems that color of paint plays a factor. I noticed paint rash pop up mostly on gloss red or black models more than any other color. It seems metallic colors are the least effected... at least that is what I’ve observed from my collection.

      Wow! Thanks for chiming in. I've watched so many of your videos that helped me make purchase decisions; thanks! I'm running a tally of paint problems in my collection so will do a brand ranking at the end of the year. I agree red is the worst (I avoid gloss black due to reflections), but almost all non-metallics seem to show slight paint bubbling.

    The glue-on parts thing that TLVN does I can honestly just do without.
    It's already nerve wracking handling these things as is with their delicate paint, aligning and gluing tiny mirrors, front lips, and rear lip spoilers as cleanly as possible without any glue residue just makes it even worse for how absolutely expensive they are where I live.
    A shame really, I don't expect perfection from mass-produced items but for the price, I'd hope their paintjobs could last a solid decade at the very least without going paranoid over it.

    Interesting video, thanks for making it. So on Tlv.. I’m a big collector of them but always appreciate hearing another perspective. It’s interesting to hear about your experience, it’s been the opposite of mine. I actually have been super frustrated with minigt and the terrible Qc I’ve experienced. However tlv has been flawless for me so I don’t mind paying extra (no hype as far as I’m concerned). I’ve only had perfect paint from the factory, but I generally have newer tlv. I’ve had issues buying second hand, have to be really careful with rash. As far as I’m aware the rash does stem from corrosion and the use of zinc (in whatever mix they use). The one time I’ve seen rash from a new tlv was the hk special rx7 which were stored for an extended period before being released likely in a humid environment. If you do live somewhere humid you’ll need to store them with desiccant. Shouldn’t need to but it will stop the rash. On value, I think we either see value in it or not. For me tlv is still the best overall in quality and consistency of any die cast brand I’ve bought. The mirror thing is so odd to me but I would love to understand why they do it and it varies from model to model. I can bet you it’s not as simple as cost savings, Japanese companies tend to be more umm quirky and will have a reason for doing something even if it’s not apparently the same one I’d make. Sorry for the long ramble but wanted to throw an opposing view point out there. Ultimately we should buy what brings us joy, and for me that’s tlv 🙂

      I agree with you about Mini GT. I have been frustrated about their QC as well. To think that they shut down a factory due to not meeting their QC standards and then having continued issues with QC makes me want to stay away from here.

      After years of occasionally buying diecasts, i was used to greenlight\JL\AW quality, after sampling TLVN and some other higher end diecast brands, i'm shocked that GL\JL\AW etc are still in business, the TLVN issues pointed out are legitimate, but minor as a whole when you compare to what some other companies deem "acceptable quality".
      For MiniGT, they've just nailed it when you compare the value portion of collecting, they've slotted themselves solidly in between hotwheels and higher end premiums, and offer solid castings (their latest stuff is awesome), they are here to stay and have a bright future imho, TLVN should be worried that they can definitively steal a lot of collectors from them.

    I love your videos! So very insightful. You made this 2 years ago, what about now? Did the RX-7 get worse? Did you find some way to preserve them? I'm curious whether those bubbles are growing over time, or were a manufacturing QC issue from the start.

    It's definitely a rip off. but If you look at ignition models, their larger sized models go for hundreds if not into the thousand. The whole industry is a ripoff since they know we want these 1/64's due to space limitations. That is why they are so popular in Asia especially Hong Kong, Japan, where space is expensive. I also collect action figures and feel they are of better value.

    • @smallmodelcollector
      @smallmodelcollector  2 роки тому +1

      Yes; the high end 1/43 seem even more a ripoff. but the lower end 1/43 IXO stuff seems a good value if you can live with an inferior model. 1/12 Hasbro figures seem a decent value but not sure if a 1/12 Mezco is a better value than 8-15 1/64 MiniGT cars. All collectible toys are irrational cash burners it seems.

    Thanks for the input, I have about 7 TLV in my collection and I do believe their detail is the best, however some of the TLV that I have do have some sort of paint quality issues. For the price paid, I would expect more effort on their part. MiniGT, well I love them and hate them at the same time. Yes their paint is great, but they feel pike toys to me with all their super cars that they are putting out. Now, Inno64 is a brad that makes interesting stuff and a a great price . Enjoyed the video, great topic for a diecast discussion. 🐳👍🏼

    Tlv rash problem is known because they use thin paint. In addition all castings are prone to some degree of paint rash if kept in a damp area like a place where there is humidity. Now to say that one brands quality of paint is better then the other is difficult to assess as sometimes quality is inconsist at times.

    I just got into the hobby and have really enjoyed your videos. I appreciate your attention to detail and your perspective on value. Definitely has brought to light some things that I want to focus on in my collection. I have bought a few Tomica Premiums which I was happy with until you mentioned panel gaps which I cannot unsee. I wish they would not bother with doors that open, pop up headlights and other gimmicks in their models because they sacrifice so much accuracy for that functionality. I think I am going to make the switch to mainly focusing on Kyosho because of the long list of cars that they have models of.

    Hi, I started collecting TLV 2 years ago. My very first TLV was the Ferrari F40 red colour which surprisingly is still in good condition. However, as I added more cars into my collection I'm starting to see little flaws in the paint on other TLV model cars such as my Ferrari Testarossa and my lancer Evo 6. Those little flaws really frustrate me because of the price tags I paid for those models.
    I came to realise that collecting TLV Is not worth the money and I think its better to collect cheaper 1/64 model cars such as Mini GT, Tarmac works or Inno 64. That being said, Mini GT recently has its own QC issues.

    • @smallmodelcollector

      I'm with you; TLV doesn't know how to paint models or make them last. I think normal TLVs are worth $15 and the specials $25. I have some messed up MiniGTs with bad lights, but only one made in Bangladesh had bad paint. I'm going to start buying more Inno and Tarmac and hope they don't have the same problems in 5 years.

    Actually the smaller the scale, the harder it is for them to make a model of. A 1/24 car that you mentioned, yes it does use more materials, however it is way easier to manufacture and add details too unlike a 1/64. What TLV did, giving intricate details and realistic proportions at even such a small scale is simply mind blowing, this definitely is one of the reason why TLVs are so costly. I do however agree, that some TLVs are simply astronomically overpriced, in particular to the Ferrari models. Their prices are not in line with the rest of the TLV line up.

    • @smallmodelcollector
      @smallmodelcollector  3 роки тому +1

      I agree it's harder to make something smaller, but since 1/87 cars often have better details than TLV this brand falls under my criticism. If Herpa ever entered this scale they would easily put TLV out of business.

    This hasn't aged well, but you said it "We don't know what will happen with these (MiniGTs) - maybe they will fall apart" - well it became true - they are the worst - so many defects, parts not present, front lights falling, bad paint, bad wheels, bad rims, bad paint... Almost every diecast manufacturer has dropped in quality. Also, TLVs, you should remove the wrapping paper inside the box - it makes a reaction when touching the vehicle when there is moisture (doesn't matter which country or climate you are in - 1 bad day and paint rush comes to play...). Keep in mind that Asian countries are humid - the older the model, the harder it is to get without paint rash. Always get at least 2 pieces of the same model! And always store them with Silica gel!
    You are responsible for not doing your homework (due diligence) on knowing how to preserve your collection, what are a brand's weak spots and knowing where and how to store your models.
    Tomica TLVs are by far the best or at least in top 3 brands for 1/64 model cars among 80 manufacturers. Just because you have 1 piece each for 15 models (which happened to be stored badly by the seller or you or are unluckily defective pieces) is a drop in the sea compared to the models produced... doesn't mean TLV is not great.
    You being disappointed is understandable, but collecting and just simply buying models are 2 different things - when starting to buy them, you should always research a brand!!

      I have over 1000 car models now and TLV is towards the bottom of my brands; they're overpriced and lack details compared to almost every Chinese brand. I have 355 Kyoshos and 61 TLVs; I have far more paintrashed TLVs than Kyosho so do the math; the brand sucks. Diecast airplanes don't have this problem; I have 300 of them and only 2 or 3 have rash.

    • @tsvetanmihailov6908
      @tsvetanmihailov6908 Рік тому

      @@smallmodelcollector TLVs definitely have a problem with some paints, but so do Kyosho - I have 3 high-end Kyoshos and 1 is with paint-rash. Do you get my point? For my country - I have to order them and they are both 20 dollars. So overpriced is for you, but not for everybody. The brand sucks for you, but the brand doesn't suck in general. If 1 defect outweighed everything, we should stop collecting - every brand has some defect or disadvantage... I don't like how you are presenting the information like facts, instead of saying "in my point of view" or something - and I can NOT do the math - there are thousands of people who collect and many of the older collectors don't use computers or social media, so to get an average percentage of defective models (before and after the pandemic which is another factor) would be next to impossible...

    I only have 1 TLV, the same yellow RX-7. They're nice, but just not worth the price. I also prefer Mini GT. TLV in my opinion is a "Fanboy" situation, people believe the hype. Another issue is what TLV puts out, the majority are Japanese family cars that are highly detailed, but are not "special" cars to most of the world. And that comes from someone who loves Pintos. Resin cars, time for me to cover my eyes and ears, too costly for me. 1:64 cars make more sense because of storage space. For me this hobby is related to nostalgia for the real cars. I have about 500 cars and 475 of them are 1:64, then a mix of scales. Great points, food for thought.
