Any type of drop tuning on the guitar works pretty well, but not required by any means. For example, the band Four Year Strong uses standard D-tuning and they're disgusting as is with that, whereas Chunk! No, Captain Chunk! can be found all the way down to drop A# tuning. It mainly depends on the vibe you're shooting for or where the vocals sit comfortably. Drop tunings sound meaner and heavier since they have more low end. While the same vibe can be achieved in standard but it'll just sound a bit happier and/or brighter. As a suggestion, maybe start by studying/practicing guitar modes. Modes break down guitar scales into sections that help achieve certain moods from brightest to darkest based off a starting note from within a specific key.
Number 1 sounded a bit like your song How It Should Be! Just a little with the background guitar. I absolutely love that EP. At some point I want to learn In The Sun and Stay in Love on guitar!
