Russia's Newest Military Signal Is COUNTING DOWN! - But Why?

Strange NEW Russian Military Signals Just Appeared!

I'm getting the newer pip on all the frequencies from before except 6218 (which is playing music, specifically on USB not AM). That is, 5780 5838 6230 6402 and 6930 are all playing the newer pip sound. Some with the included background noise (e.g. it still seems to be rebroadcast).
The music on 6218 must be some pretty serious amount of power to be as clear as it is in so many places (S8 over an S1 noise floor in Finland, S5 over an S1 floor in the UK, S8 over S5 floor in Austria, S9+20dB over S9 floor in Romania, a weak but audible S6 in Kuwait, weak but clearer S5 in Novosibirsk).
The air raid siren on 6911kHz was incredibly annoying. One moment, it was a clock, and then it abruptly transformed into this...
Like that Pink Floyd song.
It's freaky. Maybe check the time with the actual bombardments on Ukraine? Interference? 🤔
@@rusticbox9908I assumed exactly the same!! However, Stalingrad does not get direct attacks from ANY enemy to avoid WW3 pressure. Not aware of exact location for this one…?
you got me into shortwave listening, thank you for making such amazing content!
I wish I could listen to hf/sw with the hardware I own.. I live on a farm in a rural area of northern Ontario, but I have a load of QRM due to a cellular site about 1100m in front of my house...
what rig did ya get? I'm thinking of getting into the hobby. The kit that our friend makes these videos with looks pretty good
I just managed to decode one of those Russian signals. For some reason it says "Five kiloton hypersonic warhead, target Manchester UK, Thursday 12.00 noon. Take cover."
Needs remodeling anyway
"Remember to drink your Ovaltine"
Is that 12:00 GMT or BST?
What frequency it was on
@@philsharp758it says 12:00 noon?
the distinction between the Russian Military and Illegal Bandits is semantic at best
Heh
Oath
Werd!
"Spectrum users" set me off. "Captain Scarlet da da-da da-da"
Also, my 1st computer was a Spectrum. :)
THIS IS THE VOICE OF THE MYSTERONS... WHO TOOK MY CHEESE FROM THE FRIDGE... REPLACE IT...
Next we'll find out that it's the Mysterons behind all this. 😏
The Russian State had a very important project: set up new radio stations to give a shortwave enthusiast in Manchester new stuff to post about!
😁😁
Not going to lie, Lewis. Getting called out like that by Russian. Pirates has got to be both awesome and slightly terrifying.
6218 is playing a song right now. "From the Volga to the Yenisei." От Волги до Енисея. And it's repeating the song.
Jolly nice points Mr. Manchester! 👍
6322 is the official pirate training frequency as documented in the official training manual "Pirates for Dummies".
Really enjoung these videos, one of my favourite youtube channels at the moment. Thanks for this great content 👍
Always interesting stuff, keep it up ❤
So good, need that end at the intro of videos!
Hi Lewis, I've been watching your channel for a long time and love how you explain everything. I'm not a radio man but I do like listening to things. I only have a couple of little handhelds, can you pick these kinds of signals up on handhelds? I have the UV5R and a UVK5 with one of the open firmware builds 🙂
Hey Richard I’m not up to date on the quanshengs but I don’t think so
You might be able to on the UVK5, but i don't think its sensitive enough.
I'm sorry, the Quansheng lowest frequency is 15khz... to be able to hear these you need to go as low as 4khz... But, try RTL-SDR v3 or v4, these are usb computer dongles and these work fine!
@@fretlessfender No, actually the frequency range is 18 MHz to 660 MHz, and 840 to 1.3 GHz with the radios firmware flashed with the egzuma custom firmware.
Thumbs up 👍🏼. Great video
Thanks Lewis. In a way, it's good to hear that you have an 'on air' audience out there, even if it claims to be a pirate.
Shortwave is getting more interesting. An idea is slowly starting to creep around to get a normal shortwave radio and start monitoring time to time.
fantastic video
the Stalingrad clock started playing a siren again, it played the wind up and about 17 seconds of the alert itself, cut off the recording, and repeated. did this for a while, then went back to ticking.
My ex brother in law, who was a massive jazz freak, had a live Louis Armstrong recording where someone shouts "Hey Louis!" mispronounced like "Hey Lewis!".... whenever you play that pirate's message to you, I think of this.
The air raid siren was being played on 14.205 yesterday
One Thing I noticed this weekend, in my Area around Cologne on 27,315 Mhz AM a Radio Pirate from Ukraine pushing through, talking constantly about Babin Yar. Noises of a 29B6 Kontayner OTH Radar could be heard on USB from 26,865 MHz all the way up. Idk if the latter only was Harmonics from another Frequency. About these Air Raid Siren Sounds: Could these be overlaying background from a Speaker to Mike setup like on the Buzzer? Then these signals would come from Transmitters near Belgorod.
I will make a Ringway Manchester folder on my SDR with all the frequencies. There are too many to have them loosely covering the bands...
i still think that pirate shout out was super cute 🧡
I wonder if the siren is an actual recording of the sirens in russia near the broadcaster
Another BANGER!
Where I live a banger is a big sausage 😁
Sounds much like time markers along with frequency markers...
You should mention in a vid for the current pirates to do a double beep with spaces :D
Lewis, what SDR are you using? That chat function looks great for hunting elusive transmissions.
Just he TWENTE sdr for this vid
Respect Lewis , loving these videos . I loved radio since a kid from my first CB in the late 80s. Growing up in that period the Cold War was coming to an end but picking up number stations has been my hobby ever since I’m now 40. You are doing a great job keeping us informed and also attracting more people to radio .
Do we know, from direction finding, roughly from which sites/cities these transmissions emit?
Don't indulge the pirates with attention they don't deserve
Your disclaimer does nothing when all the pirates are in your comments section.
Hi Lewis I emailed you some videos I took, it shows the air raid siren but also another song they played, you have full permission to use the videos or just the audio from them
Ok the pirate message made me hit subscribe😅
I just heard the air raid sirens on the CB bands. I'm chaulking it up to Russia, but pirates are also a possibility
pips on 6231 as well
That is absolutely fantastic! Guys, how can I get into radio hobby? I have zero understanding in that....
As a starter search google for websdr, select a station somewhere on the planet and scan through frequencies it can pick up
Then save some money up and search for HAM or amateur radio hardware for equipment to do it yourself from your home
Anyone else’s dog reacting to the pips up to the 2min mark?
It's so easy to wideband a HF transceiver these days.
Lewis excellent as usual
LOL! You have a fan. :)
I can hear the PIP on 6230 kHz USB 2024-03-19 0:07 UTC on my ICOM 7300 with an End Fed antenna from Kentucky USA !!
I may have missed it, but did you mention 5838 kHz? It seems to be a different sound, also. It seems like a lot of time and effort to make a completely fake automated signal that will stay up for days. I know the FCC in the U.S. uses aircraft and trucks to DF illegal signals. Playing music over a signal marker for an hour is one thing. I can’t imagine someone out there would be able to keep these signals up for days at a time.
All pirates, unfortunately. Shortwave has become a playground lately.
Well we always enjoyed playing around abandoned buildings when we were kids
That comparison I think would only be valid if that building was still occupied and you'd be having no respect towards whatever is going on inside.
If it’s not in use it’s available….that’s one outlook people have.
It’s a natural resource and if I use it for a time when it is not being used, where is the harm, the losses, the cost to whomever and who does it take from ???
Just playing devil’s advocate…not condoning
Radio transmitting has certain and very specific rules, starting from getting a license to the power you're allowed to use, just as the limitations of bands that is provided for your purposes. Pirates do not follow, respect or obey these rules.
And I assume I don't have to emphasise how both illegal and unethical jamming or trolling other stations is. Talking about harmless stations, and not such military stations that actually operates against your country in a conflict.
I've been a radio amateur and SW enthusiast for 25 years, and what's currently going on is nothing shortwave radio is supposed to be about. What started as some cheesy political bickering in the 40m band has just grown into a massive undertaking by pirates who have the money and effort to operate an entire station in their households to create all kinds of fake channels, markers, jam others ,and mislead guileless amateurs just because their countries don't put any effort into enforcing these rules. It's like if your country doesn't punish robbery, some people with bad intentions will start doing it showing no remorse whatsoever.
Shortwave is not a natural resource, it's a field that used serve, and at some level still serve the interests of countries, companies, and at limited levels entertainment for amateurs and hobbists. These pirates are damaging everything some people invested lifetimes to keep this area clean and controlled. Some people put years into learning radio stuff and the rules sets involved, invested a fortune to enjoy the greatness and value of shortwave radio, and now some pirates show up to poop into your scrambled egg.
It's like an idiot deliberately leaking oil into the lake you've been fishing at since you were a kid. Natural resource or not, it's not something you're supposed to poison uncontrolled. :)
It's strange how many people find it interesting to broadcast dada-esque nonsense for hours at a time.
i've heard some talking on 4500khz USB, i don't know what they were saying
Maybe it's not illegal where the transmitter site is? Might need to setup a dx fox hunt :)
Thanks Again RM. Great Stuff**** Take Care.
I'll keep my ears open and let you know !
What was the chat thing in the video?
Definitely bandits
@Ringway Manchester
This was the original audio which was played during the war in Stalingrad, my grandfather was there fighting for the 6. Army and survived.

I love radio piracy. It's what made me a DJ. I personally think if a band is silent, it's free to use.
....and below 1 watt ERP, you're effectively correct.
Free Air Free Speech
If silent meant silent, well, maybe. But just because you can't hear it, doesn't mean something isn't there.
@@teknikal_domain If a tree falls, 😆
@@bielanski2493That's a great value.
I wish the government would allow some HF frequencies for experimental broadcasting such as 160 kHz - 190 kHz in the United States... why not allow this on HF frequencies (USA)?
Could the pips be used as make-shift triangulation to guide UAVs? I guess all other services like GPS or GLONASS are jammed in many areas in eastern europe now.
hey, do you want to check out the shortwave in the rural ottawa area? i have an SDR You could use remoteley...
Can someone here recommend a decent SW radio?
6230 working again
Oh for the days of radio pirates broadcasting popular music. Now, so much espionage and counter-espionage you cannot distinguish between Russian and Western signals. Hopefully the British will use the theme music from "The Magic Roundabout " or cricket commentary by Henry Blofeld and John Arlott as channel markers.
Face it, old style test match cricket commentary will send the eavesdroppers asleep .
although i know you dont condone the activity it seems your becoming quite popular
That exact air raid siren is being blasted a lot on 27.385LSB. along with tarzan and a few other strange things. SWL can be soooo fun 😂
That’s every day. Not usually on 27.385 though, usually on 27.555 with ‘ola ola coca cola’ and ‘fiiiiiive foooour zeeeerrrooooo’
@@sprint955st hehe, and oscar Italy... Not heard him for a while...but I must admit, he is the most creative of all of the QRM'ers
These things are global? What kind of setup do you need to do this? Can a pirate do it from a home setup?
I know that might have sounded a bit like an air raid siren, but it was probably just a bunch of Lincoln City fans celebrating a goal 😁
I know this is slightly unrelated but CB channel 9 near me just seems to be constantly Russian / Eastern Europe man shouting. Never breaks broadcast and always a one sided transmission.
I hear nothing but Puerto Rico on channel 9, but have heard Russian speakers on channel 16 USB and Italians on channel 12 USB last weekend.
The ticking sound on 5800, 7000, 8200, 9400 kHz could they be the signal from the Russian dead hand system
I just got some music on the 9400, but there's too much static to make it out.
As I get uncomfortably near the end it amazes me how people can waste their time on useless stuff like putting these stations up. I know you find it interesting Lewis but surely there is much more interesting stuff they could be doing ? It's no good regretting wasted time when it's over. Just a thought .

During the first playing of the ticking clock, I got a notification on my phone. It's the sound of the Vecna clock from Stranger Things. Then it happened again during the air raid siren.
It is not the Vecna clock from Stranger Things. There are videos of this on YT.

I don't know. If my coumtry has a war with ukraine i would at least give it some other name, and not scream it out to all of the world.

I know that in the recent past many of these gorilla type armies and Narco-trafficers etc in Latin America use various shortwave frequencies to communicate but they don't bother with beeps and buzzes or any bulls**t to ridicule the police/government etc. 8-)
Damn unfortunately it seems you're making these pirates popular within their circles, aggrandizement if you will.

What do you do for a day job Lewis? I'm guessing you work at/for Ofcom.
You know you are a UA-cam legend when a pirate politely asks for a shout-out. Respect.
The more I watch these videos, the more excited I get about getting back into amateur radio and world of shortwave. Please keep up the excellent work explaining the oddities of the airwaves and the old infrastructure that is rapidly disappearing.
Do..... 🙂
Imo don't - the community is toxic and strict rules prohibit hams from Having fun for instance discussing politics the bandwidth is jokingly poor by design so no way to share videos or links. Ham radio reminds me of steam locomotives - a thing of the past. Would i invest any more of my time into it? Nah, even ham manufacturers don't Care anymore to produce decent equipment.
@@farnborough83 Okay Mr. Bitterface. For my part I enjoy SW radio.
Yes, AD hominem attack would revert reality for sure 😂
@@farnborough83 Now you're using emojis.
Wow - you're getting shout-outs from the pirates! You're a celebrity now!
The tickling clock is certainly a reference to the one in Leningrad during the siege aka the heart of Leningrad metronome from 1941-44. The Soviets also used the metronome at Stalingrad 1942-1943.
I'd like to see the setups of these russian pirate stations. Some of them have to be blasting some decent power cause I can hear them all the way from the eastern US more often than not lol.
Maybe someone will set up "War Pigs" on a loop...
i think people are doing this just for fun now thats what it feels like to me but also you resparked my love for radio stuff

Oh, just got to the point in the vid where you found it ^^
Wasn't able to hear anything on 6322 at 23:32 gmt
Im tellin' ya man! You're famous! Another great video.
Is it just me, or are 6930 and 5780 keying up and down for their beeps? If you listen closely, you can tell the static clears just before and just after the beep, then jumps right back up. It's like whatever is generating the audio is triggering the transmitter to broadcast it, then immediately shutting off after each beep. Either that or there's a very tight AGC in the chain somewhere, possibly even at the receiving end. But I didn't notice it on any of the other transmissions, just the new beeps. You do mention the costs involved with transmitting these things 24/7, so that might be a cost-savings measure.
I did notice that. I thought that was very strange.
@@CathodeRayNipplezLewis even said in the video that these are most likely pirates doing this with their own funding, so cost-effective transmissions would be rather important.
AGC or some type of audio compressor
That air raid siren is chilling
I think it might be a good idea to stop these videos for a while. They arent "oddities", they are pirates trying to get you to give them a shoutout and get their signals onto your UA-cam channel.
Did the air raid siren last week coincide with that small foray into Belgorod?
Pirates, no doubt about that. Changing the channel markers from one to another have no strategic value or real meaning whatsoever, as their original and only purpose still is to keep the frequency clear. The russian markers still run on their specified frequencies practically non-stop.
I would say it's a bit of a wasted talent, if this is all they're capable of: changing them ever so ofter so Ringway Manchester covers them in his roundup videos. It would be more interesting to hear them troll the real channel markers such as The Buzzer, unless, of course we're dealing with russians who doesn't want to harass russian military markers and just want to bask in the warm light of RM's attention.
Now, I don't call out RM to stop making these videos. These are very informative and entertaining and most importantly, they point to the frequencies to listen for. If you have an SDR of your own and a decent antenna, it's great fun and even if you don't, SDR in The Netherlands is the absolute go-to place.
I have noticed a Pip style marker on freq 1680. Top end of the MW band. Wondered if it was a Russian or Pirate signal like your videos state, DX from North Norfolk. 23:40hrs
What would it sound like or encrypt if you’d combine them together?
6250 kHz - "Slot Machine" can be faintly heard behind Echo Of Hope.
