  • The first test flight at Fantasy of Flight of our reproduction Curtiss Pusher. Owner Kermit Weeks said, "Talk about a blast... this thing is a bit on the scary side for the moment as it has no stability and you have to fly it ALL the time. I made three passes down the runway and eventually got above the tree tops until the crosswind got a bit much. I'll continue to play with it when it's calm and work up to actually going around the field!"

This is just amazing to me. I have so much admiration and respect for the early aviators and of course this pilot. Sometimes I feel like I was born 80 years too late..

I like the self assisted (get out of the seat and walk a bit) taxi turns. Great video, really fascinating to see something out of the history books come to life.

The two things that I enjoy most about Kermit Weeks' collection is that it covers such a wondrous span of aviation history and he actually flies many of the aircraft. Aircraft belong in the air as long as there are at least two examples remaining. I admire those individuals and organizations who preserve aircraft in museums so that future generations can marvel at the growth and expression of the technology. However, being able to see examples in their natural element never fails to excite.

Thank you Kermit Weeks...I am 68 and have never flown in a small aircraft. But I sit here in front of my PC and watch you fly and tell stories of the various aircraft history. I watch you all day long some times. You are my Buck Rogers hero.

I really appreciate the risks that early aviators took that allows us to fly safely and comfortably. I could build an aircraft but when so much was unknown about flight. I can't imagine climbing in it and risking injury or death to see if my hunches were correct!
We owe them for letting us live the dream.

Really impressive. Really makes me appreciate your courage and ingenuity in the spirit of the first flyers and engineers. Very awesome engineering and so cool that you're bringing this to the people to see what's involved. One can only imagine what it was like for the people who first made and flew these things! Thanks for what you're doing!

By the way, today is the 110th anniversary of the June Bug flight. On July 4, 1908 Glenn Curtiss made the First pre-announced and public flight in America winning the First airplane prize in America. It was also the faster american airplane at that time (39 M.P.H.).

Curtis had the luxury of being a qualified pilot. Imagine how the original inventor and pilot faired on his first flight never having flown before. Damned scary but these guys had guts. Take a look on Facebook for Bert Pither who flew the world's first metal airframed aircraft on 5th July 1910 on Oreti Beach in New Zealand. He also built the motor for it. Men with Balls!

I remember in the movie, The Great Race, a Curtiss Pusher was used in one of the funniest stunts in the movie. It could have been a Martin Pusher, since they look similar. It was painted solid black to represent the evil guys in the movie - Jack Lemmon and his henchman - Peter Falk. Fun movie.

My grandpa went for his first flight that got him hooked on flying in a curtiss pusher. He said it was the best ride of his life. Sadly when they went to land on his first flight they crashed due to a Mole hole. His dad wasnt happy with him at all. HE told my grandpa Dont go flying you got work to do. Years ago, Time-Life came out with a series of books detailing the history of aviation. There were at least 15 or 20 hard-bound volumes. The writing was incredible and it was amply illustrated. Those pioneers are the real heroes, and they had the right stuff in the early 1900's through the 20's, because aviation was dangerous. Many lost their lives, you don't need to when you can fly a Cessna 150 to a 747, and your warbirds. I say 'pass' on this-not worth it.

hey Kermit.. are you using the original power plant? sounds as though it runs a bit faster than an engine of its age and a bit more smotherly.. though I know Curtiss was an expert on this sort of thing.. still strikes me out how modern this power plant sounds.. either way thanx for bringing this piece of history back to life.. .. p.s. i wouldn't blame you for modernizing the ignition and lubrication systems, as well as a better exhaust valve.. thats not cheating it's just smart lol.. thnx again
