Great video. Is there any chance we could get a similar video on the Suez Canal?
Now we need a part 2 talking about the Suez Canal
@Zombie ZH himer
I don't see why as an Australian I'd be taught about things like Panama and Suez.
Like for example, I didn't know Panama was actually a series of locks and a lake. I just assumed it was a large canal dug through Central America and that the United States spent a lot of effort in keeping that thing open and free from attacks.
@ArmchairWarrior
I'm wondering if the Suez is the same way now... a bunch of locks or is it just a big canal you can sail a fleet through?
stylesrj I think it also has a lake, not sure about the locks
@@stylesrj I don't believe there are locks in the Suez. Just a series of unobstructed dug canals with small lakes in between.
@@stylesrj the Suez is a sea-level canal, connected through a lake in the middle. So no locks. That also means larger ships can pass through it, than can pass through the Panama canal. As a result, roughly twice as much cargo passes through it yearly compared to the Panama canal.
As a Panamanian its really refreshing to see a video about the canal thats NOT about its history but rather about its modern impact on the world. Didn’t think i’d see it on this channel tho 😂

@@loveFrAd Suez is more important for everyone. Much more ships and cargo go through there, than through Panama. And if there wasn't a USA, there wouldn't be a Panama Canal.
With the US and Chinese trade war it won't be long before the Panama canal loses significant traffic, if they don't keep their promises of curtailing the tariffs soon.
Suez canal processes a lot more ships than Panama canal.
Plus the Suez canal processes many many times more tonnage, the Suez canal is 673 ft wide and the Panama canal is 110 feet wide. Over 1/3rd of global tankers are too wide to use the Panama canal, much bigger ships can use the Suez canal.

I’m from Panama and liked the detail of making the flag of my country for the thumbnail using cargo containers, thanks a lot for talking about the Panama Canal 🇵🇦
As a Panamanian myself, it is very exciting seeing someone else document the Panama Canal in this very professional format :)
I went through the canal in 2017 as a line handler on a small yacht. Small boat traffic has to go through at night when the commercial traffic is lighter. A group of yacths meet outside the canal to 'raft up' - tying the boats together for the canal passage. Canal staff throw down monkey balls with lines attached once you are inside the canal. These are wrapped around cleats and four line handlers on each corner of the boat either take in or release the lines to keep the raft in the center when the lock is operated. Otherwise, some boats end up capsizing within the lock when they hit the side. We moored in Lake Gatun for the rest of the night and woke up early when the pilot came on board to navigate through the lake over to the Pacific side. I have lots of pictures of our little boat passing huge Panamax ships. It's a fantastic experience if you ever get the chance to watch the doors close and the water start to bubble all around you.
We take our 60' Hatteras through the Mississippi locks once a year and we always go with multiple other boats. Usually 4 but if they're smaller boats more. It's quite interesting to see how it all works

Yaj Jhajhria true
Lol, so true. Best comment yet.
@@TommoCarroll Especially news media. When do you ever see some front page headline or breaking 5 o'clock news story that says something like "Family of eight rescued from violent explosion by good samaritans?" Of course they're not the ones to blame, as that's what sells, which indicates just how messed up the ordinary masses are. Tragedy and misfortunes of others always piques their morbid interest. I always call schadenfreude the 8th deadly sin. And most people in society have an inherent case in it. Reveling in others' misfortunes. That's why highways back up for miles even when accidents aren't even occupying any of the lanes. Sick.
Yaj Jhaijhria this enraged their fathers, who punished them severely.
Not only are your videos amazing, your thumbnails are so well made, so professional, so inexplicably fantastic that it's not even funny.

You all should subscribe to Knowing Better if you don't already. He has this font in his thumbnails that is just really easy on the eyes. It's hard to explain but it's true. Your comment on thumbnail aesthetics made me think of him.
He correctly portrayed the Panamanian flag with shipping containers. That is brilliant!
I don't know which fact was more surprising, 5600 worker deaths or the possibility of a million dollar transit fee.
Most of the deaths were from mosquito-borne diseases deep in the jungle.
That's actually not correct. 5600 deaths were during both the French and US construction process. Most died during the French construction process (which is why they abandoned it). US came and drained all the nearby wetlands to kill off the mosquitoes spreading the malaria (main cause of death) greatly reducing the death rate.
Look at how much the Suez costs: ua-cam.com/video/0iwOZOb90fM/v-deo.html. And the Suez has no locks (it's all at sea level), so it's cheaper to operate.
Why is $1 million transit surprising? When it costs over $5 billion just to upgrade, they need the money!
i can’t imagine how fascinating it must be for a shipworker’s first few times sailing quite literally almost all the way around the entire planet…one thing that’s always been on my bucket list is take one of those journeys one day. in case some of you reading this weren’t aware, there actually are numerous container ships that will take on 10 or so passengers upon booking/payment because the vast majority of those ships have a few private cabins just in case they need to sail with a few more people than expected, and it’s surprisingly INSANELY cheap, especially when compared to the cost of circumnavigating the entire globe via commercial air travel.

I was just in Panama and got to see the Canal for a while. It's an absolutely fascinating piece of engineering, and the large locks behind in the hills are even bigger. But you didn't mention one very important part of the Canal, which is that most ships require 1 or more trained ship guides who work FOR the Canal to guide ships through. The ship captain is required to hand over authority to these guides to transit the Canal.
Yes they do that in every port I think, they’re called pilots. That’s because they know the waterways like the back of their hand so they can advise and guide the ship along the safest routes.
As a panamian I can confirm that this is true
The Suez cannel has been expending greatly for the past few years, 2 routes, wider and more depth. That is one of the great recent things Egypt has done to influence the world.
With the huge global population growth, I think all canals, silkroad and other means of transportation are welcome and needed. Its not a competition since you can only pass a capped number of ships/trains while the demand is increasing . All the love from Egypt 🇪🇬

"Panama declared independence on November 3, 1903. The newly declared Republic of Panama immediately named Philippe Bunau-Varilla (a French engineer who had been involved in the earlier de Lesseps canal attempt) as Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary. In his new role, Bunau-Varilla negotiated the Hay-Bunau-Varilla Treaty of 1903, which provided the United States with a 10-mile wide strip of land for the canal, a one-time $10 million payment to Panama, and an annual annuity of $250,000. The United States also agreed to guarantee the independence of Panama. Completed in 1914, the Panama Canal symbolized U.S. technological prowess and economic power. Although U.S. control of the canal eventually became an irritant to U.S.-Panamanian relations, at the time it was heralded as a major foreign policy achievement."

Ships go UP and OVER Panama. The rainfall into the lake is what powers the system. It was a work of genius after the French found that a sea level canal wouldn't work. I flew into Panama city once at dusk, the sight of all of those ships lit up waiting for the canal was an impressive sight.
Why wouldn't a sea level canal work? Sure it would be much more expensive to dig out an additional 26meters but I don't see why it couldn't work
@@echonozz8929 Two reasons:
1. Turns out Panama is not flat. The canal would have to be level. A lot more digging would have to be done to get down to sea level.
2. The Pacific and the Atlantic ocean are not at the same level. You would have a constant flow in one direction.
The suez canal didn't have either of these factors going against it, so it worked. The French tried the same thing in Panama and stopped.

The typical arrogance of the Yanks - yep, you won the war single-handedly while we Brits clearly just sat around drinking tea and playing cricket. Truth be told, the Soviets had as big an influence on the outcome of the war as anybody else. The Yanks did NOT win the war - repeating such tripe only serves to demonstrate your arrogance, not to mention ignorance. No country could have won that war without the efforts and sacrifices of all the other allied forces. The Yanks only got involved for the purpose of power and money - we were still paying back the war debt to the US as recently as 2006 - look up 'lend-lease'. That war bankrupted the UK and the Yanks new very well it would, and made sure it was as painful as possible for us.
The war finished the British Empire and the Yanks made sure of bleeding us dry of every penny they could. Still, we had the balls to stand up to you when it came to Vietnam and how did that go for you all? Hmm, not very well from my memory. And what about the Falklands? Yep, you Yanks had the audacity and sheer bloody cheek to tell us to leave and give it BACK to the Argies - the Falklands NEVER belonged to the Argies! How about a video on the logistic problem due to Evergreen ship in Suez canal
one of the few good comments here
i bet the Panama is looking real good right now since what happing in the suez canal
Great video again. Nice to see how even something that could be considered a 'natural monopoly' actually faces competition in the market, from other routes over the world, other technologies, or even just another massive canal.
I used to live right in front of Miraflores Locks on the old American base. I can literally see my house when you zoom in and out from the Canal!
I already kinda know this but I'm so early I gotta watch it

Theodore Roosevelt: America are not colonists
Also Theodore Roosevelt: invades Panama just to build a canal through it
Democracy requires hypocrisy
thats not how it happened.
Roosevelt teamed up with the rebels to give Panama it's indepedance, lending it's forces to invade Colombia. In exchange, they would get the canal.
@@OB.x not even keep the canal we gave it back in the Early 2000s
@@OB.x That's not even how it was what happened is a treaty was signed that said the us would guarantee our independence if we gave them the rights to build the canal and administer it thus we declared our separation from Colombia, retaking the country meant conflict with the US and so they let us leave.
ThomasTurner69 colombia: wait that’s illegal
I’m here after the ship blockage at Suez Canal
no one cares?
Will the NorthWest passage make the Panama Canal obsolete as the ice caps continue to melt?
