- In our newest series, we bring to you one of India's Most Extreme experiences and this time around, we're covering the deadly and controversial, Tamil Nadu's Jallikattu festival.
Jallikattu is a sport which involves embracing and taming the bull while it escapes from a narrow window or passage into the ground. Played majorly in Madurai, the festival is known to be connected with ancient tamil roots.
In 2020, more than 100 people were injured and 5 people died. Infact, the supreme court banned the sport in 2014 on the grounds of cruelty to animals. However multiple protests took place in Tamil Nadu to uplift the ban, stating the sport was central to their cultural identity.

Thank you for making a video on Jallikkattu.I Hope atleast after seeing this video the animal rights activists understand that there is no cruelty to the animal.
I would recommend you to make another video of the emotional bond between the bull and the owner. How much money,care and effort is invested in the preparation of the bull for the sport. The transformation of the very same bull that is so aggressive in the arena, into absolutely timid with the owner. How gentle they can be with women and children will make a very special video.

Thanks for explaining Jallikattu. Some lobbies were portraying it as cruelty toward animals and even succeeded getting the court to impose a ban on it. ApexCourt just lifted the ban on it. Indeed, We Indian Hindus don't hurt animals leave alone being cruel to cows, bulls or buffalos. We worship cows. But one footnote: passing that rope through a bull's nasal septum is questionable.

jallikattu is our tamil pride, our culture has been conducting this sports for a thousand years, the cows are grown by it's caregiver as a member of their own family and when it dies naturally, they raise a temple around it and conduct pooja on it's burial site every year just like they do for a family member. People who do not understand the cultural importance of this sport and spew hatred and saying that a tradition which has been followed for hundreds of years must be banned probably need to stfu and educate themselves. As for curly tales, Even if you do not support a tradition do not be its obstacle.

Please correct yourself mam. It is not bull taming festival. It is bull embracing festival. ஏருதழுவுதல் means embracing the bull. This is not the Spanish game where the players attack the bull. Even the government checks the players if they have any weapons or if they have long nails that can scratch the bull. Please go do some genuine research on ground and present it mam.
