I'm just a few minutes in but the echoing is really hard to listen to. I love the idea of this and am excited for future chats! Maybe put mics on or have podcast mics to help with the audio.

Thanks for the feedback! Everyone, give this comment a thumbs up if you thought about it! We are still trying to decide what the future looks like for this podcast style series. We could go a couple different ways with it and would love to hear all your feed back!

Probably depends on one’s phone speaker. I could hear you fine. ✨
And, I’m totally more naturally like Jayna for cleanup, it’s super hard for me to relax with a mess. But I’ve shocked myself by finally learning to let go of that & clean up later, if that seems more appropriate in the situation. 😅

This video was PERFECTLY timed. Last night I was in tears after being left out of multiple get-togethers in a row by our friends and family. My husband kindly reminded that we can be the ones to reach out and host. This is out of my comfort zone, so I needed these tips so much. Thank you so much!

I have a friend who introduced me to what we call the “crappy dinner party”. I love it. We invite each other over, go to the grocery store, get the ingredients, and then make food together. Super fun with one or two friends.

If you haven’t listened to it, I love the audiobook “The Gospel Comes with a House Key” by Rosaria Butterfield. She calls it “radically ordinary hospitality” and I love her idea that it doesn’t have to be a big production to show hospitality to others. I always feel like if my house was cleaner or our repairs done, THEN I can have people over. I need to be better about not waiting for things to be perfect.

That book is next on my reading list😊 I am so grateful for my home. It could really use a paint touch up, and literally nothing we own is fancy, but I do my best to keep it cozy, tidy and clean(ish). I am always surprised when guests compliment us on our home and how peaceful and welcoming it is. I think there is something to it, when you are just unashamed of your home and do what you can with it and welcome others into your real life. The house becomes a background and the relationships in the home take center stage. I think maybe it comes across as unpretentious or something when you obviously aren't bending over backwards to impress your guest, and instead focus on the time you spend together. I am so happy my identity is in being a child of God, and not my house❤️

Loved this! Jayna’s quote at the end 🤯🙌🏼
I’m a 26 year old pastor’s wife with two small kids. I didn’t grow up in a family that hosted.. like ever 😅. When my husband and I got married 5 years ago, I was kind of thrown into the world of hosting and had NO IDEA what I was doing 😂 my poor guests at the beginning. It’s been a great experience to grow through though.
Got a ton of ideas from this video. Still have so much to learn! Y’all are so blessed to have been raised in a culture in which hosting is a central component. Would love a part two of this chat 😊 when Megan said that she could talk for an hour about this I was like “please do!”

@Abigail Green - Yes, I agree with you... Jayna's quote was 🤯🙌 After thinking about it, I would like to add to that by saying: when someone leaves our home, they should have greater faith in, love for, and understanding of our wonderful heavenly Father. ❤️ Blessings to you, Abigail! May He bless & guide you in the work that He would have you to do. 🙏

I love this! I just got married so the idea of hosting makes me nervous lol and I struggle with the idea of hosting people who are inconsiderate or don’t care about the other person’s property or things, so I’m trying to grow out of that mindset and be more willing to be hospitable cause that’s what believers are called to do. These are all great tips!

These videos are my favourite and I so look forward to them. I'm so glad you talked about checking on your kids every 10 mins or so, even with doors open. My brother was mostested by a boy only a year older than him as a child and my mum had an open door policy too, so I feel strongly that just open doors alone is not enough.

And I’m commenting for a second time (after getting through the entire video) to day after hearing you girls talk about different things you’ve done to host friends, I’ve about decided I want to move to your community 😄… and the comment at the very end about how being a good host means your guests leave feeling better about themselves instead of better about you- 🎯

I also watch your weekly videos so you probably remember that I truly enjoy them because I often comment on them, too! Revise Megan's tip about putting all the apps you use on your front screen to putti g them on the second screen leaving the first one empty! Or just have the weather app on the first screen. This way when you hit home it's always a clean slate to look at your pretty wallpaper and not be distracted with all the apps.

This was brilliant 🌸 love the end quote 🌸 I find hosting incredibly difficult as I fear being negatively judged. But I try to get past that and make myself do it anyway. I think if I practice more it’ll be less of a big deal. I have family whose kids absolutely thrash my home and also do same to my parents home. It’s so hard to have that conversation with family without offending them but I find I’m not as generous on inviting them to stay because of it 🙈 100% food required when you host. I won’t relax unless I can get the person at least tea and a biscuit. My Nanna would always make you eat … even if you just had dinner before you called ❤️😂

We are not Mennonites but we do like to host. We often have people over for parties, holidays, or just random get together’s. The problem is everyone relies on us to host. We never get invited anywhere. It makes me sad. I wish there was more give-and-take.

One trick if you forget someone's kids name is call them by a really unusual name or a name that is definitely not theirs like you're teasing them. "Hi, you're fitzherbert, right?" Then they'll usually laugh and say "no it's..." And then tell you their actual name. Then it's more like a joke than you actually forgetting.

We have a real focus on sharing food together in fellowship in my Church. On a Sunday morning we just fill up our slow-cookers and then invite friends, students and guests over after Church so no one goes without the offer of lunch. It’s a great way to get to know people and discuss the sermon in smaller groups!

A few simple ideas for hosting
    1) Stromboli and salad
    2) taco bar
    3) soup and salad
    4) grill hamburger and hotdogs and add baked beans and salad
Don’t stress about your house or even the food being “picture perfect”. Hostessing is not a competition to see who has the prettiest food display. Just be who you are and Enjoy the fellowship -that’s what hostessing is about
Usually I put away any food and leave the rest for after everyone leaves.

Some really great tips. I’m older and I’m seeing a decline in people committing to serving others. I was saved when I was 18 and as I grew in my faith and relationship with the Lord I felt that need to help others and my church taught me the need to be a servant for the Lord and that means serving others

I'm partway through this video and I'm loving it! I'm not religious but one of the most important things to me is friends and (especially) family, so we definitely have a lot of common ground. I strive to be a person who brings people together and I would love to be the kind of person that makes those around me feel valued and comfortable. It seems like my Italian heritage shares a lot of the values that Mennonites have with regards to hosting, and it's something I'd like to develop more in myself (although I'm somewhat limited by living in a 700 square foot apartment). Thanks to you both for the wisdom, and the kick in the pants to put this sort of thing to the top of my priority list. 😊

  • @ummfulaan9672

    Oh wow that quote... yes!
Im learning to be more like Megan I guess, cleaning up after. Kids in bed, comfy clothes, a nice drink, headphones and tackle the mess. But Im naturally more like Jayna - clean up as I go, but I do always feel like a frustrated hostess, trying to clean, listen, talk, serve,.. and it shows. Working on that though, finding that sweet middle ground.
I love kids, and I love other people's kids. The last time I had so many kids over however, I was done. Some mothers... Kids leaving their shoes on, jumping on the beds. Eating while roaming through the house, messy hands EVERYWHERE. It usually takes a week for me to not find any more messes in hiding places. I dont understand how mothers allow this, especially because I know they would hate that (some mothers even decide to never host because they hate others making it messy. Which Im okay with, if thats a ocd type of problem. Just... Please be mindful of the people who do "sacrifice" their homes.) Some mothers just dont think about it, they dont care, they allow messes in their home and are less aware of that kind of thing in general - thats fine, as long as they dont mind me asking to wash heads or not touch certain stuff, or eat at the table.
We always say it takes a village, but few parents allow other parents to actually interfere in the most silly situations.

Personally I don’t enjoy hosting haha, but still do! With OCD tendencies and anxiety it causes me a lot of stress, but I try to push myself to do it. I do always end up enjoying myself but dread the prep and clean up because with my tendencies I fixate on perfection and I can’t rest/go to sleep until I “reset” my house after guests leave (cleaning, putting things back where they belong, vacuuming, mopping, bathroom cleaning, wiping down all surfaces, etc.). Everyone tells me that I am a great host though so at least my craziness and anxiety is kept hidden until they leave 😂

I enjoy your chats! I loved the quote at the end. Such a great thing to remember, and It kind of takes the pressure off of you to have to "perform". Another thing I would add to the list is to help pick up the toys before you leave. When we get somewhere the house looks so nice and when we leave it's a wreck. Mom/kids can spend a lot of time getting the house cleaned up to have company and it's nice to leave it clean when we leave. (Just hope your daughter doesn't say what mine did.. I told her it was time to pick up toys and she said "oh it's okay It was a wreck when we got here!"😂😂 She had heard me say that on more than one occasion about our own house. oh well, children keep you humble I guess 🙃)

I always taught my daughters to share their toys but before guests came over, they each would give me their special doll to put in my room so no one would touch them. We all have our special things and they did too. As for cleaning up, I just put the food away and pile up the dirty dishes, then clean up when the guests leave or in the morning.

I just came here from your conversation with Lisa from Farmhouse on Boone. I love your energy, you two seem like such fun! This topic caught my eye because I've been struggling with hospitality lately, in the past year and a half or so I guess. My husband and I sold our condo last February and moved out in April. We bought a farm property that is just pasture and are in the process of building g a house. In the meantime we've been living with parents until this April, we moved into a rental property close to our farm so we could start raising livestock and getting our feet wet with gardening.
All that is to say, we haven't been completely comfortable hosting in our setting for the past year or so and as a consequence I haven't felt like I've put my best foot forward. I absolutely love to cook for people, but I've been feeling constrained.
That said, lately everyone who has come to visit us has brought ALL the food for the weekend. They would say that they are bringing enough for one meal, and then it becomes so extremely extravagant that I end up not really serving much. We actually ended up with so much extra food last time(because I had planned to provide lunch) that we ended up with waste. They also have to travel a long way to get to us, and gas has been expensive as you no doubt are aware(even if you don't use it?), so I feel BAD when they come and have spent SO much money when what I want to do is show them how grateful I am that they came at all!
My biggest fear coming out here was that no one would be willing to visit. The last visitors actually ended up feeding us AND doing all the cleaning. I was mortified but at the same time felt deep gratitude. It was so conflicting for me as I don't usually offer to clean much as a guest, like sometimes I'll do some dishes or help pack food, but not ALL of it, and I never expect or really want my guests to offer more than that either.
I'm not really sure what is happening this year, but I think my first thought was that it was kinda bad etiquette as a guest to take over the host/esses job. Perhaps we are more blessed than I realized and they all somehow wanted to show us how much we matter to them. Or maybe they're all telling me they don't like my food!🤣🙉 I am bewildered. Any thoughts?

That was a great idea about letting everyone know which rooms are ok to play in. I visited one of the ladies that helped raise me with my small children. She took my son on a house tour and took him into the formal living room and told him he could ask about anything in the room and look at everything but that it was not a room for children to play in. He loved it and felt very special. And because she had done that he stayed out of there the whole visit. My mom never really liked the idea of having a child and this lady was the nicest lady she ever had me live with.

I really enjoyed this content & have to remind myself of a quote pretty often: “Hospitality focuses on the guests. Entertaining focuses on the Host.” I defiantly have Jayna tendencies when it comes to cleanup. But I’m trying to be more ok with leaving cleanup (except for food that needs to be refrigerated) until after the guests leave, and then be intentional about enjoying my guests! The dishes will be there tomorrow, but my guests won’t be😍 But that also depends on the size of the group & if the guests insist on helping cleanup. Sometimes I let them, sometimes I don’t🤗 But I’m always secretly glad if I do 😜

A nice video, even for someone like myself who is a lot older than you are. We also host after church on Sunday but I never serve hot / cooked food, but like a ‘cold buffet’ with several kinds of cheese and sausages, French bread, toppings, chicken wings and a salad. Maybe a soup, that only have to heat up. That way it is more relaxed for the hostess.

I’m definitely a “Megan” when it comes to cleaning up. I get the honor of hosting a LOT because I’m a pastor’s wife. I don’t want people seeing inside my cabinets or fridge.😂 I also don’t like for people to help with dishes…. If it’s Sunday after lunch, I want to be able to lay my children down for a nap and not have to worry about keeping my guest entertained while washing dishes.

  • @Shannon.Hazleton

Megan, that blue is perfect on you- so lovely. And I wish you ladies had been around sharing your advice 10 years ago 🤣… we used to host a small group of families with young kids in our small home … and I was just appalled that every single time the parents would never clean their kids’ hands and faces before turning them loose in the house, and would never step in and stop them from pulling anything they liked off the shelf… inevitably by the end of the evening all my kids’ crafting supplies, puzzles and games would be in a pile on the floor! Even as a seasoned mom I still find that many guests often pay no attention to their kids and I’m left to awkwardly ask them not to do things like stand on the white pillows with their shoes on! Maybe you ladies should take your show on the road and give some lessons 🤣

Food is essential for any hosting! I’m an atheist, but was raised Lutheran. Across the board through every religion/background, it’s what almost everyone does. Of course there are exceptions, but even for a cocktail hour get together, we have snacks/appetizers. 🥰

I'm a Megan when it comes to hosting.
On the food front, always have enough for guests, I've been to many events where there was too little food and then everyone is afraid to enjoy anything. So an extra bag of chips, pretzels, or even fruit and veggies, are great fillers to fill out a party spread.

The best hosting advice I have received is to never have your house spotless. Make sure there is always a little mess or something that needs cleaning. That way when guests come over it doesn’t make them feel inadequate if their house isn’t spotless, keeps the pressure off of you, and your clean home doesn’t become a source of pride. There is also something comfortable about hanging out at a friends house that isn’t spotless - like you can be more real with each other.

Thou shall have food is absolutely the number one commandment in any culture or religion. I live in NYC and I am not a Mennonite, but some things are universal. For someone new to hosting, a sporting event or a streaming movie or concert is a stress free way to start. That takes the focus off you as the host and is easily a pot luck situation. Just make sure the bathroom is clean and have lots of ice. Everything else is optional. It's all about getting people to come together and have fun.

my rule for hospitality is providing a place were people can feel safe, welcomed and provide a sanctuary for them to rest a while. how you do that is very much a lifestyle choice.
I'm like you Megan I'll leave the dishes till the end. but it depends who is coming over they might offer to help clean up so I let them.
I always feel a bit anxious about people coming over that I have enough food or space, but in the end there isn't much else I can do but smile and enjoy fellowship/community.
lots of people are wanting that right how especially seeing that thr virus has separated us for so long.
also hospitality is for strangers too Abraham hosted random angels of God.

Megan when my mom was still hosting people at home as a ministers wife she made this dish.x2 packets of lightly salted crisps (layes,)x4 tins of shredded tuna, tin of 🍄 soup,x2 tins of peas, grated cheddar cheese x3 cups ,sliced tomatoes 🍅. Take a nice glass rectangular dish, spray with spray and cook.smash the chips, layer the dish with chips then peas then chedder cheese ,chips again, peas cheddar cheese until all the ingredients are layerd. Heat the mushroom soup as indicated, throw over the dish put sliced tomatoes and parsley or mixed Italian spice on top ,more grated cheese pop it in the oven at 180 degrees until cheese is melted and brown. Serve with a salad.or we had lasagne and salad etc.this is now in South Africa.
