For those who made slight errors, Lucy stated that they became aware of the subtext during the FIRST seasons, actually it was episode 8. She did misspeak and say series instead of season. Guess her kiwi accent decieved some of you. Underworldisis1 Of course Xena wasn't originally written to be gay, however saying that her daughter Livia was the reason she wasn't was ridiculous since Callisto was the father. Both Lucy and Renee played up the subtext in various places and surprising kissed each other more times than they actually remembered. Yes subtext was real, maintext was real and the producers decided to leave it all up to the individual to see what they wanted to see.

There has been frequent discussion regarding the characters' sexual orientation on the various forums and mailing lists. The suggestions of a lesbian relationship are not unintended. In a November 1996 interview in the Denver Post, Lucy Lawless addressed the issue thus: "We are aware and we're not afraid of [the lesbian element]. This is a love story between two people. What they do in their own time is none of our business." Bolstering this view, producer Rob Tapert has said coyly that the relationship was "Whatever you want it to be." Campfire scene Do they? Don't they? Will they? Won't they? That Xena and Gabrielle have an extraordinarily close, loving relationship is undeniable. The Xena staff takes every opportunity to cultivate the relationship between Xena and Gabrielle, whether it's drawing them closer or developing the infamous Season Three Rift that nearly tore them apart for good. They've done a great job of making it so viewers can see whatever they want in the show. So are they? Aren't they? Or just Bisexual. DOES IT MATTER?
It was a bit disengenuous of Lucy to say they only picked up on the subtext followers after the 5th season...even in Season 1, Episode 19 Altared States, in the river scene they were very strongly playing up to the subtexters....
I don't agree. These two women traveled together, ate together, fought together, risked their lives for each other, died for each other, cared for a child together, constantly declared their love for each other, and knew that they were soul mates. And it's impossible for me to believe that Xena and Gabrielle weren't in a relationship. Watching the whole series, it's clear in my mind that they were in love with each other.
... and the kiss ... is friendship too? ... hehe ... I understand what you´re saying ... I have a friendship as strong as that ... but It´s just a question ...
oh yeah so people won't hate me later on I am a huge fan of lucy lawless seen almost all the movies she's done and everything... want to go to the conventions and thank god she hasn't done a poor interview with no meaning like this one again... love her truly as a person and an actress but thank god she came to sense that this type of interview of sex and money has nothing to do with her as a talented actress... She is a sexual icon both gay and str8 and a truly talented woman... :-)
i hated how people would call xena and gabby's relationship as being lesbians. just imagine, being one of them, travelling alone together, all you can depend on is each other. that person becomes your family. its just a very strong friendship.
Xena and Gabrielle were soul mates that has been apart of their cannon. The question is if they had a sexual relationship with each other which was left to be ambiguous.
@bellavic10 They are soulmates , not only best friends, and they really are in a relationship as a couple (people like or not) ... It gets all clear in the last three seasons, like in S06E20 "Soul Possession" when after Xena (in Joxer - male body ) married Gabrielle (female) and in the end of this episode, Xena goes back to her own body.. So.. What do you think? She and Gabriella won't be married anymore? Won't they love each other anymore just because they are two women?
I love Lucy Lawless but gurlie plz don't ever do an interview acting like "wut ever" again... I swear... Kevin Sorbo he's aight I guess Im more of a lucy lawless fan and always thought hercules side kick was the hot one... the blond hair caucasian blue eyes had me drooling all over lolz... back in their day lolz... oh well yeah didn't like the way this interview was perceived that much and just hated it from start to end... im out this interview is freaking ridiculous
lucy lawless herself said that after watching the show and the end episode that the relationship between her and renee's character was definitely lesbian in nature.
You see what you want to see. I saw a very strong friendship between Xena and Gabrielle. I also know that Xena had a lot of male affairs. She needed a lot more than good old Gabby could offer! LOL
Hahaha, do these antisubtexters specimens still exist? Whether or not Xena and Gabrielle were lovers, Lucy and Renee said, after this Lucy interview, their opinions do not count anymore. ua-cam.com/video/f61XwyApCSs/v-deo.html
I saw them being best friends for, because in lot of shows and movies, know some friends show their colors. And they backstabbers but through thick and thin, and hard times they over came there difference.💯💯💯💯💯🌹🌹🌹🌹💎💎💎
Lucy spoke of the true nature of Xena and Gabrielle's relationship. If Lucy said the other "opinions" no longer count in these times where it is no longer necessary to camouflage as friendship the same-sex relationships for fear of censorship. Xena and Gabrielles were lovers. End. ua-cam.com/video/f61XwyApCSs/v-deo.html
yeah this is the first time i see them not embracing the gays/lesbians... i mean Xena/Lucy sorry to tell yah but the gay community is the only reason your show became an international worldwide hitttttt... gay women are not afraid of being manly so yeahhhh pretty much sums it up... eventually you would of had a good run but not as good as the gay community on your side... kinda stupid for them to handle it so bad and just freaking low on their part... i mean damn Lucy even said,"Xena is GAY".
Lucy is soooo beautiful, and her mansion, oh my god, she did a lot of money playing Xena.

Xena was not gay and neither was Gabrielle. The fans just read into it
