  • In 1943, the US Marine Corps adopted a new sniper rifle. They were build with National Match (NM) and Special Target M1903s with a J. Unertl 8 power USMC-SNIPER scope. Chambered for the standard .30-06 cartridge, these rifles would see service through the Korean war and the scopes would continue to be used in to Vietnam.

    Beautiful piece and great footage as usual!

    It looks like a very nice clone. The bolt assembly looks to be parkerized, instead of the correct blueing over polished steel. Also, its a 1943 manufacture where the fielded 1903A1s were almost always 1939 and 1940 models (Special Target and National Match).
    The Unertl optics were 8x, but were actually about 7.8x.
    I just built a clone on a 1943 Remington 1903A1. Fitted a new Criterion match barrel, Malcom 8x Unertl clone, and a Huber roller trigger.

      The owner says its original, I have my doubts though. Can be tough to tell for sure since there was not an official standard. But as you mentioned there are some common similarities and this one does not have some of those.
      Sounds like you have a nice build, how does it shoot?

      @@HistoryinFirearms cplnorton1 did an amazing video about the history of the M41 sniper rifle (not all true unertl snipers had C stocks). Basically in the video he says that a true expert would never mistake a clone for an original. All of the marine corps sniper rifles were highly modified national match rifles from the late 30s. He used the Freedom of Information Act to find out exactly how the marine corps made those sniper rifles. A lot of clones get sold for real sniper rifle prices all the time. If it is not a national match rifle or the scope does not say marine corps on it, then it is not a original, no matter what someone has told you.

      @@dancortes3062 Ah, I've seen that video. Lots of good info. I've also talked to Tim from usmcweaponry.com who is cited in the video. His website is an excellent source of information also.

    The Hi-Lux Malcom 8x scope can be re-indexed after zero has been set. These Unertls don't have this capability as far as i know. In addition the Hi-Lux optics can have a spring installed to avoid having to pull the optic after firing.

    • @HistoryinFirearms
      @HistoryinFirearms  11 місяців тому

      Those Hi-Lux scopes look pretty cool and true to originals. I'm not sure what you mean by re-indexing. Later models of the Unertl scopes did have the reset springs.

    • @jacekpaszkowski2000
      @jacekpaszkowski2000 11 місяців тому +1

      @@HistoryinFirearms With reindexing I meant, after setting a zero with the scope, let's say for example 100 meters/yards, then re-zeroing the turrets back to zero. I know hi-lux can do this but I hear Unertls don't have this option.
      Where did you get your rifle Rock Island Auction? They've had some pass through there, one I remember selling for $38k when the estimate was no higher than $12.5k for it.

      @jacekpaszkowski2000 Ah yes! I know it as zeroing out the turrets, but I should have been able to figure out what you meant. 🤦‍♂️
      Correct, you can't zero the turrets on the Unertl. This belongs to a friend of mine who has had it a while.

      John Unertl offered it to the Marines, but command had armorers leave it off, as they thought it would be a problem in the volcanic ash of the Japanese archipelago.

    are you readjusting the zoom when you pull the scope back into place?

    • @HistoryinFirearms
      @HistoryinFirearms  Рік тому +1

      No, the scope is intended to slide in the rings to prevent damage from recoil. The recoil pushes the rifle back and the scope stays in place. The scope must then be pulled back to keep zero.

      You can set your eye relief with the forward thumbscrew ring, to avoid bite.
