  • Ivan Petroff (1899-1963), not to be confused with the basso Ivan Petrov, is a rather new discovery to me. I find the timbre and power of his voice absolutely amazing. Here he sings a fantastic Rigoletto. This is from a complete recording from 1951.

Now here is a singer acting with his voice! I wish we were blessed with such today,,,I have just seen Tosca at Covent Garden with a Scarpia who "looked" marvellous but whose actual "singing" was almost inaudible in the grand tier, and who resorted to yelling the FF passages. No reason he should change or re-study as the public screamed and cheered at the curtain call. We need to educate audiences and primobaritono's choices seem a good place to start. Thank you.

Ivan Petroff: un magnifico baritono di mirabile musicalità, linea di canto e dizione.
Sia solo per giustizia poetica, il suo nome dovrebbe essere inciso in oro nella pagina dedita ai grandi baritoni verdiani che furono.

The more I listen to Petroff and other baritones, the more I admire his vocals and artistry. He is the full package- warm and powerful voice, perfect diction and phrasing, mastery and artistry!Too bad that artists like him have been forgotten, but thanks to YT they have been brougjt back to light.

Grazie. Molto interessante, direi una lezione di canto. Purtroppo non ci sono più gli insegnanti di canto. E' incredibile la differenza tra questi cantanti lirici e gli attuali. Oggi è una vergogna!

A great voice, and the range of emotion, from rage to pleading, is remarkable. How on earth could artists of such talent and skill ever be so overlooked? Thank goodness for recordings and for diligent researchers and archivists such as yourself, primobaritono. Congratulations and many thanks for your posting of these most informative, and often positively startling videos. This is a marvellous series, a real earopener.

THIS GREAT BARITONE WAS BORN IN BULGARIA AND STUDIED I THINK WITH FERNANDO DE LUCIA. HE FLED TO U.S. IN 1938 AND BECAME AN AMERICAN CITIZEN. GREAT ARTIST AND SOMEWHAT FORGOTTEN LIKE IGOR GORIN

This particular Ivan Petroff is Bulgarian. He was born in 1899, and studied classical singing in Bologna before he emigrated to the US. So the iron curtain has nothing to do with him, really.

True but in a way it does. Even in Bulgaria singers that were popular before WWII are practically unknown because they were not promoted by the ancient regime. Also in the West they were largely forgotten because they came from a then-commie state. I discovered singers like Elena Nicolai or Ivan Petroff very recently.

Baritoni d’origine bulgara che avevano delle voci drammatiche vere erano :
      1 Ivan Popov
      2 Ivan Petroff
      3 Stoyan Popov
Tutti e tre oggi di potevano interpretare il grande repertorio del basso.

Artists like Petrov or Shtokolov or Reizen were not "overlooked". They were known very well to the West because of the venyl records you could buy in Prague or East Berlin, but unfortunately the Iron Curtain didn't allow these fabulous Russian artists to let them perform also live on stage in the West.
Therefore many thanks for "primabaritono" and others to post these wonderful Russian treasures on UA-cam ! Fabulous singing !!

Singing has, alas, been taken over by those who grate their chords or shout without tune. The vocal technique industry's legacy is left only to a diminished opera genre.

Ivan Petroff could probably out sing most of the baritones working today. If his style was not entirrely Italiante, then neither were Lawrence Tibbett or Robert Merrill, strictly speaking. I'd willingly accept the difference for this level of vocal quality.
