  • What is the beak and why do we cut it?
Because the beak is continuously growing, beak trimming is important as it redirects its growth, as
well as rounding the tip of the beak so that it is not so pointed, so that if there is subsequent pecking, it will be less damaging than if the trimming had not been done.
There are two basic purposes of beak treatment techniques:
    ● Avoid feed waste
    ● The incidence of pecking is a consequence of different situations
    ● Feather dropping or feather pecking is a normal behavior in birds, but there are occasions when this can lead to more aggressive pecking and even cannibalism.
    Different practices for beak cutting.
At present, there are two different systems for beak trimming within the framework of the regulations in force.
On one hand, there is the classic system using a hot blade and on the other hand, the infrared
    technology.
The common considerations for both methods are:
    ● A minimum length of 2 mm must be left up to the nostrils.
    ● Beak trimming should be performed only on healthy animals.

In conclusion, beak trimming is not necessary, and alternatives should be implemented instead, to maintain the welfare of the birds.
Beak trimming in layers is a common practice in commercial egg production to prevent feather pecking and cannibalism among birds. However, it is considered inhumane by many animal welfare organizations and experts, as it can cause pain and stress to the birds. Furthermore, it is considered unnecessary as there are alternatives to beak trimming that can be implemented to prevent feather pecking and cannibalism, such as:
Proper bird management: providing birds with enough space, appropriate lighting, and a comfortable environment can help to reduce aggressive behavior.
Training the birds: Chickens can be trained to live in harmony in a suitable environment
Providing enrichment: Providing chickens with appropriate opportunities to forage, perch, and dustbathe can help to reduce feather pecking and cannibalism.
Monitoring birds regularly: Regularly monitoring the birds and identifying any issues early on can help to prevent aggressive behavior from becoming a problem.
Feeding a balanced diet: Providing chickens with a balanced diet can help to prevent nutritional deficiencies that can lead to feather pecking and cannibalism.
