I'm so grateful for this content. I feel like I have been playing some of my best chess lately, and I think it is in large part due to the inspiration and teachings of this series.
I know right. In the past month of practicing since I started building habits I have increased my 5 minutes blitz by +150 points and 10 min rapid by +65 points
Same! Its crazy how much better I've gotten. This series sort of just unlocked some secret code like I'm seeing the Matrix or something. I'm having fun again and am looking forward to getting better and better.
I notice all the comments are from a few months back. Just stumbled on to these about a month ago. This is the best beginners chess series I have come across. Much appreciated!
Knowing how great it is, I definitely would have paid for it. I think I'll get a hoodie just to pay him back in some way. I went from 450 to 700 in 2 weeks.
Great video series Aman! The way you slowly and repetitively go over each game is helping me a ton! As a new player who doesn't know any real openings this is a solid method and my games are improving. Thanks and I look forward to the next one.
Thanks a lot. I decided to play the game thanks to that serie. i'm playing 2-3 games a day. Already achieved 1100 elo even though I'm still missing a lots of basic tactics... I'll improve with time I guess. I'm watching the ful serie because I needed more explanation than the short version on a few things. Thanks a lot for what you did.
1:04:00 Pin on the Queen. Take knight for bishop trade if the queen moves because you double the knights. I tried the idea at 1:55:00 but my opponent just moved the king to the side instead of doubling their pawns. So I really didn't gain anything from it. 2:08:00 ladder technique with rook and queen
I've been playing chess every day for months now and watching all of these videos and for whatever reason I cannot seem to stop blundering... I'll be in a winning position and always find a way to lose my queen or majorly fuck something up. I get everything you're saying to do but because I can't seem to play a single game without blunders I cannot get my elo above 550
I'm trying out this Habits system because I was struggling to get my ELO over 950, even though I can crack puzzles at 1600 or so. Just wondering, I like to play 30 min games, no super fast blitz ones, will these techniques still work?
1:42:00 Believe me or not GM Aman, but we are NOT STUPID. Just explain it we will understand and than move on, just giving sets of rule for no reason is not consistant and efficient. Still its your way for making things easy for some reasons but its ok to explain moves, we wont be borred or anoyed, its a learning experience just dont consider your audience as idiots, explain if you can with easy words WE CAN UNDERSTAND Edit: Thanks for the content also. If i make a critic its for the concept to be optimal. (Also excuse if i wrote bad english je suis francophone à la base)
This series just got me from 600 to 900 in one month. You're very good at explaining things and I love how you're not afraid to lose as a teachable moment
fer suree. A huge discouragement as a beginner is the pressure of "shoot I don't really have a plan here, idk what to do right now" and stressing about trying to come up with some crazy tactical idea as your clock just whittles away lol
Thank you for your Building Habits series. I blundered my Queen and I didnt resign and won the game. After I blundered my Queen I told myself continue with the habits and beat him in the end game.
That last game was gold! That "hot-headedness" as he called it has been responsible for me losing quite a bit of games. Also, great tip about keeping the rook in front while executing the ladder!
My impression is that GM Hambleton gets into time trouble by explaining things & waiting for live responses & such while his clock is running, casually burning a minute or two. Irl the first 10 moves of the habits so far would take maybe half a minute or so.
How long are the actual live streams when he did this? ~2 hours, or longer? Just curious if these uploads are cut for time. I've climbed from 400 to 902 using these habits. Currently am sticking to habits, but have faced some challenging players that have forced my ELO to fluctuate back and forth between 850 and 890ish (over about 10 games now). Just wondering if this back and forth slow climb is common and if it can potentially take quite a few games/hours of play to level up/stay consistent at the next level?
@@irishjay9485 I've settled to around 820 after a couple hundred more games. It's tough, I feel like the quality of your opponent varies widely, regardless of their ELO. It's easy to hit some highs and some lows. I find it difficult to keep a constant climb with just habits, especially when some opponents are clearly using specific openings and tactics.
I started watching these 3 days ago I jumped from 850 to 975 in that time. Before I was stuck at 850 for over 3 months. This system teaching non flashy and sound moves has been killer at my Elo level. This the most I have ever improved in my life time. I'm so impressed by this series. Side note: the Vienna seems to crush people in my Elo range. Should I take the time to learn it or stick with what I'm doing?
Make my day ! WoW, you just have, Aman. Wondered if you could one day do video of your more complex tactics, for us mere mortals to marvel at. Would that be something you guys would like also ?
I've moved from floating back and forth around 700 elo to 900+ in a couple of weeks just following those habits. I spent all my time before half-learning openings and wasn't consistent at all. The temptation to play the non-habits moves is strong sometimes but I'm resisting.... Great series.
Looking forward to seeing 900s streaming themselves trying to apply the same rules and follow the habits. Great series and wonderful idea, thank you chessbrah!
If i did it from 400 to 1900 it would probably be a 10000 part series... lol but seriously i'd like to know how others are doing. I'm blundering and missing free pieces a lot
I feel like these ratings are totally wrong. I just won a game. After this game, my ELO is 622. My opponent was 570 after the game. I played at a 92.9 and my opponent played at 80.7. I had 9 best moves, 10 excellent, 3 goood, 6 book, 1 inaccuracy, 0 mistakes, 0 blunders. My opponent had 7 best moves, 6 excellent, 8 good, 0 inaccuracy, 1 mistake, 1 blunder. After his blunder, he resigned...
Aman, u do know that, these series goes beyond chess right? It transcends into life, work, health, play etc. And if we develop our own good habits for work and play, it would be only fair to say that our life would be principled and turn out better at the end of each gift of 24 hours/day. We appreciate the time and efforts you have taken to showcase us these simple but beautiful tips. One question, your STONEWALL speed run, doesnt it play on these very same principles? centre stage asap, develop asap, castle asap, strong centre....the stonewall is the living proof of this...same goes for the Vienna opening/gambit. ..the gambit however are tactics but the Vienna game is a good solid opening. I hate losing that ur losing on time so hard though! I mean its like 1-2 mins consistently! I wish we could learn time management sooner! You have so many good games we just don't get to see finish. But losing on time isn't something I normally lose to even as a 400 player. I know you're trying to make it more fair but daaaang lol
after watching from 400 to here, some moves that you don't make are beginning to look pretty realistic for a 900, and the fact you don't make them is pretty annoying to watch lol, great series though, love the content.
This is the most helpful chess content ive ever seen ive improved so much over the past 2 weeks, i really like the genral rules and how you slowly add things its such a nice chill way to improve, defo useful for the slow learners like me haha!
1:39:55 I think what is lacking is an explanation of pawn islands. That could actually be a good rule for the habits: minimize the number of pawn islands.
Love this series. I’m currently stuck at this level. Can’t seem to get past 910-920. But almost every time I lose it’s because I’m not following habits (oh I can take that free pawn that’s not really free before developing, etc.)
question: game #2 you bring out the same knight as they did, i thought we always brought the opposite knight out? is there a queen pawn opening habit that i missed? (also know that it prob doesnt make much difference
The time management is so frustrating. Make the move and then tell us about the options after. I want to see the middle and end games. The lack of time management is taking away from the instructional content. Otherwise, excellent.

45:00 flagging because you are playing too slow I think. You should play fast enough to get to the 40 move mark before flagging: 7.5 seconds per move, plus extra time when your opponent is thinking.
I think this is solid advice for players who don't know how to handle their time. It's can be difficult to get an understanding of when it is a good time to spend extra time thinking. It can also be a good idea to change time controls! If 5 minutes is stressful and you always flag, you can move up to 10 minute. Aman plays 5 minute because its a popular time control so it is relatable for more viewers. I have tried it in 30 minute games and it seems a lot less effective as your opponent will make less obvious blunders
30 minute games are good
your puzzle rating will always be between 400 - 700 above your classical rating
safe to say this ruleset isn't going to cut it past 800

I agree. I kept running out of time in 10-minute games. Now I'm comfortable with repeating these same good moves and have time to try and win now.

why? the knight is defending the g5 pawn.. if you take knight it leaves the g5 pawn open to capture via the queen on d8
