Some MiG-21 family basics: The four main versions are: MiG-21F-13, MiG-21PF, MiG-21MF and MiG-21bis. Each further sub-versions are just an in-between iterations of these four ones. The PFM is just a slightly modified PF, right before the M and MF. The RF is actually the recconaissance version of the M/MF. The SM and SMT is the kind-of-a-strike version of the M and MF, but especially the SMT (where the T is for the Toplivo -> fuel) with its extra large humpback fuel tank has some components from the later version bis model as well. Such as the NR-44 emergency fuel pump and the related ChR emergency thrust mode installed on the former R-13F-300 engine (the R-13 is basically made for the M/MF/SM models, of course without the ChR mode). The final series of SMTs had the back of the MiG21bis slightly smaller 540 liter fuselage tank instead of the early SMT's 910 literes one. And the latest MiG-21 was the bis, with the new radar, new weapons and new engine R-25-300. The R-25-300 has the additional NR-44 emergency barostatic fuel pump for the ChR regime. It is a switchable additional thrust mode, where - after the manual activation by the switch from the left panel - the NR-44 turned on after a certain inlet pressure level and starts to increase the thrust above the max AB, for 3 minutes, below 4000 meters pressure height and below Mach 1. The MiG-21-93 was actually a heavily upgraded MiG-21bis in the early 90's, only for foreign customers. Mosolov's Ye-6 altitude record was made in 1961, by a modified early prototype, one year after the very first service model, in the year of the very first MiG-21F-13 shipments. So way before the MiG-21PFM, or any listed serial production aircrafts.

The version of the Mig-21 that set the short altitude record was the E-166.

I think this was the E-66 record which was basically a MiG-21F prototype with an added rocket motor.

You'll need to pull harder and go almost straight up. I managed 99,600 ft by accelerating really fast at 25k ft, slowly climb and accelerate. I was passing mach 2.2 at 35k ft at around 10-15 degrees nose high, then pulled into a 12-14 aoa pull straight up. You may need to use half stick back or more, but, it works

It's interesting but a couple of comments - if the Mig 21 could have gotten to 120,000 feet (standard) then it wouldn't have taken the SA-2 to have put an end to U2 flights. U2 pilots at that altitude used to watch the Mig-21s stalling out and falling back to earth below them. Whilst I'm sure the Mig-21 PFM was a very capable aircraft I'm not sure it was that capapble all of the altitude records were set by specially prepared aircraft - I find it difficult to believe that they even tried to go for a record without doing something to tweak the aircraft anyone would...

These records are set with usually just enough fuel to accomplish the task and return. There was probably no combat stores, so no guns or rockets either. The records are attempted to be made basically for boasting rights between nations.

Dropping the nose gives you an instantanious accelleration wich gives engines more air, so they give more thrust and you accelerate more. You bleed that speed in a zoom climb and then rinse and repeat

    Hi Cap
I tried this one and i got it to 29,5km / 96700 ft.
At 14km / 46000 ft accelerate to mach 2 and then pull up to steep climb, at 22,5km / 74000 ft when engine flames out launch RATO.
Maybe try again because you can do better than 82000ft.
My setup for this record was default MIG-21 takeoff training mission, full fuel and RATO, nothing else. First try without cheating.

First attempt was horrible where almost everything possible went wrong. The last one was very good but you can do basically the same thing without infinite fuel as well. As others have stated, emergency afterburner mode works only at low altitude and subsonic speed.
Here's how to do it from the ground: Take a full tank of gas. You can even take a belly tank because the pylon is going to be there anyway. You can get rid of the extra fuel along the way.
Climb 800 kph/M0.85 to 9-10km. Once you're there, get rid of the tank and start to accelerate level. You will notice that you get stuck for a bit between M1.1 and 1.2. That's when you should unload gently, maybe 0.7G and point your nose down about 5 degrees and keep it there. Once you've broken through the transonic, the thing starts to accelerate for real.
Now you're ready for the next phase of the climb which should be around 900-1000 kph IAS. Maximum mach is around 2.1 (engine safety limits). At that point, let the indicated airspeed fall so that you dont exceed it. Note that the thinner needle is the true airspeed, the thicker one that lags is the mach number.
I would level out around 650kph/M2.0x and burn the extra fuel away but you can try different starting altitudes for the zoom climb to see which one works the best. I don't know the optimum climb angle or starting point as zoom climbing serves almost no useful purpose.
The climb / acceleration profile itself is a very good compromise between fuel burn and performance, excellent for intercepts and combat use in general.
Edit: added paragraphs to avoid wall of text

Part of the reason the zoom climb method is best is because jets produce more thrust the higher their speed, unlike props which produce a pretty constant hp.

I think it would be interesting to see when they start decellerating and when they stall

Does the "no fuel burn" cheat work for the RATO's as well? If so, try it with that.. Infinite rocket fuel would be pretty awesome!

  • @appa609
    @appa609 2 роки тому +1

zoom climbing is not necessarily more efficient but jet engines produce more thrust at high speeds, and moving faster means you produce more power, so you gain energy much faster when flying fast. This is limited by the rapud drag increase between ~Mach 1-1.2 so most low level zoom climbs are optimal just below mach. You level off at high alt and accelerate again because you reach top speed between 40-55 thousand ft typically.

I wonder if it matters which map you play on, like would the air be denser at another map?
I would guess not, but sometimes you can go into space, and sometime you struggle to get even to mach 1, so ,,, maybe?

  • @AndrewTubbiolo

Zoom climb is more efficient than a vertical climb because the product of gravity and aircraft mass creates a huge subtraction vector from your engine thrust vector. By going horizontal you have ALL your engine thrust vector to accelerate you horizontal, then the extra lift your wings create can be used to climb against gravity with overall drag being the only subtractor from how large your engine acceleration vector can be.

This is where SFM comes good. When there are lacking capabilities, you can tweak it. I'm certain some EFM mods I'm salivating for are going to be under-performing because of reputation and mis-conceptions, and being unable to tweak it will be frustrating.
Flip side is that it lets people make UFOs, but, this is where being an adult comes in. (would be nice to have more granular server-side controls to allow things to be more open without children ruining everything)
