I quit searching you tube for teachers about a year ago when I found Brian's channel. I've played for 30 years but just chords and tiny bits of lead. I decided to learn lead and went through about 15 or 20 you tube lessons but when I found Brian I dropped all the others. Brian teaches very methodically and explains in great detail, sometimes over explaining it but that's what I like. In the year I've studied under Brian's lessons I've been able to improvise leads to songs I've never heard, write my own, jam with friends and stay in tune!! It's been.life changing. Wish I had done this years ago but I thought you had to be basically been blessed by the guitar gods to play lead and now i know it's just a matter of learning. I can't thank Brian enough. Sorry to ramble on lol.

And yet again, a few of those, "Why didn't I think of that?" moments... then, "Why didn't I hear about that years ago?" twinges of regret. Then, being older and wiser, "Better late than never." and "Thank God for Brian's videos" moments of gratitude. At any rate, thanks once again. Learned some really important things that I hope to pass along over here.

For those out there trying to understand scales. The trick to a *major* scale is whatever note you start on is your *root* note. C Major scale has C as the root note. This is where the scale begins and ends (the next octave C).
A *major* scale whole steps (skip a fret) and half steps (next closest fret) and follows the pattern *whole - whole - half - whole - whole - whole - half*.
That's why for some key signatures like D, there are black keys involved due to pattern of a *major* scale and the fact that B->C and E->F has no sharps or flats so it's always a half step and has to be worked around in other ways.
The minor scale formula is *whole - half - whole - whole - half - whole - whole*.

I had the same experience with the piano. Clarifies music theory as far as the building blocks of chord makeup, progressions, what makes a 7th chord etc. The piano was a huge help in this area....it's also fun to play and helps with song writing.

There are tons of great backing tracks on UA-cam now. Elevated Jamming Tracks is my favorite channel. I plan to get a small looper pedal soon. These tracks helped me play scales more musically and improvise. Now I'm hooked on playing.

  • @donindri
    @donindri 3 роки тому +2

I have the same looper, a keyboard, and I use GarageBand in a similar way. I think the biggest aha I got from my keyboard was seeing that changing “keys “ is how you play from different notes, yet keep the same intervals or whole step/half step relationships. And understanding this is why a C Major scale sounds just like a B Major scale. You are doing great work here. Thanks for posting.

My family could never afford a piano, so I never became good at playing one even though I took piano class and from that learned basic theory. Learning the steps of the Major scale on piano was literally my second _Aha_ moment. Going home everyday after piano class and transcribing all I'd learned to the guitar was excellent, and part of what led me to transcribing Bach and Pagannini violin solos for electric guitar years later.

The one thing that greatly improved my musicianship was transcribing my favorite songs by ear and recreating them using a DAW. I try to recreate the drums, bass, and keys (if any), record the lead guitar and also record the vocal melody on guitar. It was during one of these recreations that I realized most vocal notes are chord tones 😃. By the way, I'm a lifetime member at zombie guitar and your material on scale system, chord tones, and arpeggios is the best systematic approach that I've come across; helped me a lot. Thanks you.

This was full of good ideas and not at all what I expected. Definitely get a keyboard controller, music theory makes no sense on a guitar fretboard but is all laid out in front of you on a keyboard. Should be able to get a cheap controller on ebay and then a cheap or free synthesizer app on your phone.
If you don't want to buy a looper pedal then there is a great alternative - youtube. There is an add on called youtube looper, you can set the loop points, then just leave a comment on the video so you dont forget them. Then use the mixer in windows to mix your guitar signal (computer mic input) with the youtube backing track. Almost anything you want is out there already. For example there are recordings of Rush taken from the board at concerts, with the guitar part missing so you can play along.

The aha moments are incredibly vital to push someone to learn theory! I give credit to my stepdad who is a long time player as well and my motivation to start playing guitar. Long story short. It was my first few years of playing and I have been playing for 20 years now. At age 14 my stepdad brought his guitar on the cruise ship headed to Mexico. In our cabin I heard him noodling around with the minor pentatonic scale which I did not know at the time. I asked him what song he was playing and he responded by claiming that he was noodling around. I quickly asked him “how” how do you know how to randomly play something on the spot and make it sound good without it being rehearsed beforehand. He simply said to me “ oh it’s scales and stuff like that.” I immediately went to a nearby Sam ash music once we got off the cruise ship a few days later and picked up scale books. I immediately flipped to F major randomly and played the Ionian( major scale) in first position if F and I spent easily 30 minutes to an hour playing it up and down until it was as fluid as it could be. I then remember him telling me that you just add things to the scales to make it musical. (Bends, vibratos etc….) I then started to do that while noodling around in that one position of F major and while I was playing I had my aha moment and realized I’ve never sounded THIS GOOD. From that point forward I was hungry. I thought to myself if I can just learn one position of a scale and sound like this what happens when I learn a variety of scales and modes in different positions? My mind was blown😮 I immediately learned all the modes of the major scale than more scales and modes and I just got lost in theory. My progression skyrocketed from there. I’m not sure I would be the player I am today if that sequence of events did not unfold. For those of you who need motivation to practice your scales, chords, arpeggios, chord tones, theory in general. Instead of just playing songs and other peoples stuff than tske. It’s of my story and testimonial please 🙏

I was using a metronome, or a drum track from the internet. Now I know to do both, I will use the metronome when recording the track.

That looper seems to have "record" button and "stop" button separately. That is cool.

I started learning guitar only after many years of playing piano pretty intensively, and because of that background I never really had any trouble understanding music theory and how everything fits together, so I was able to learn guitar fairly quickly. Learning the notes of the fretboard has still been a big pain, but a lot of little things like triad inversions, modes, and connecting pentatonic shapes were always straightforward and intuitive. Even a little piano knowledge goes a long way for just about any other instrument, which is why nearly jazz musician worth their salt knows at least some piano.

My greatest A-ha moment was hearing Take On Me for the first time.

I could never see the benefit of a keyboard for a guitarist - they are so different. But, your explanation does make a lot of sense.

My three _Aha_ moments: 1) Learning pentatonic box one and that you can move it around to fit different chords.
    2) Learning the steps of the Major scale on piano. This lead to literally all things music theory (other than rhythm ofc).
    3) Working as an apprentice recording engineer and the fact I was immediately soaked with information of how sound works and how to pay very close attention to sound. This easily doubled how cleanly I played, and made me pay closer attention to literally every facet of playing and gear. I cannot say enough about how much of a difference listening to listen to things more carefully can make. It's easily doubled how good my ears are in general and that ofc has translated to me becoming a much better player in every way.

It seems like we both have had a very similar experience to learning music!
