As of April 2024, the United States owed China $749 billion in debt, and as of March 2024, Nigeria's debt to China was approximately $5.05 billion. That's a huge difference! Interestingly, the financial relationship between Canada and China includes historical debts in the opposite direction. China still owes Canada $371 million in loans incurred decades ago, with repayments expected to continue until 2045. Debt is a part of how countries function in the world, it's no big deal.
If you need something, you pay for it and keep the product. Do you also keep the money for yourself? What our leaders need to do is negotiate favorable terms with China in their relations and contracts. They can request limitations on the percentage of expatriates involved in projects. Also, Nigeria needs to focus on building infrastructure where it’s truly necessary, not just on white elephant projects. For example, we must significantly improve electricity generation, transmission, and distribution. If they help build this infrastructure and it functions properly, why worry?
