Don't mean to shit on jumbo's skills, but I've seen far superior swordsmiths on youtube.. Including people who actually forge the blades and don't just cut out a blade shape and form the edge lightly.

The way I did it (with fire), the blade will progressively change from light yellow > gold > light blue > blue > dark purple > gray. Any color past gold will mess with a blades temper. To turn metal red, I think people have to use chemicals. I use paint to get a red color, but that is just cheating.

My god, I used to have a dremel bit that would throw tiny metal splinters EVERYWHERE! Still gives me nightmares.
